2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco
Top Pick!
96 points Kerin O'Keefe: "Camphor, rose, cedar and ripe red berry aromas come to the forefront on this beautiful Barbaresco. Smooth and elegantly structured, the focused palate features ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and white pepper alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced." (09/2022) 94-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "There is a more pronounced mineral and delicately spiced character to the 2019 Barbaresco, with notes of wet asphalt and kirsch and vibrant purity. It has elegant concentration, with fine coiled ...

Guido Rivella's Nebbiolo d'Alba is grown partly in Montestefano and partly in Patricone (near Cole) and it is made from 90% Nebbiolo and 10% Barbera. The grapes are separately fermented in stainless steel for 14-18 days and then aged in wood for 6-12 months. The blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera is something that Guido did regularly at Gaja, using the Barbera to add lift and drive to the Nebbiolo. Perfect for pasta and roast meats.

2020 La Spinetta "Valeirano" Barbaresco
Top Pick!
97 points James Suckling: "Black cherries, fresh flowers, rose stems and lavender aromas follow through to full-bodied palate with chewy tannins that are long and intense. Powerful and structured." (06/2023) 96 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Vigneto Valeirano is a dark, brooding wine. Black cherry, graphite, sage, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and incense infuse the 2020 with tremendous complexity. Powerful but not overdone, the 2020 should evolve well for many years to come. (AG)" (10/2023) 94 points Wine Advocate: "Showing the estate's rhinoc...

2020 La Spinetta "Starderi" Barbaresco
Top Pick!
96 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi turned out beautifully. Bright and focused, with tremendous purity, the 2020 impresses from the very first taste. Crushed flowers, sweet, red-toned fruit, mint, blood orange and bright saline notes race across the palate. (AG)" (10/2023) 95 points James Suckling: "Very floral with both fresh and dried flowers on the nose as well as cherries and hibiscus with some sliced strawberries. 96 points Decanter: "Italy’s best winemaker? Gorgeously pure red rose and sour red cherry notes. Last vintage ever of this wine by Giacosa (the lease on the Santo Stefano vineyard runs out). Drinking Window 2021 - 2041 (ID)" (04/2015) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Rose petal, perfumed berry, new leather, pressed powder and underbrush are just some of the enticing scents you'll find on this stunning wine. 93 points Wine Spectator: "Don't touch this for ages. Blockbuster. Incredibly concentrated, like Port. Big, powerful and chewy. Raisin juice. Full-bodied, with masses of tannins and a long finish. A bit more finesse would make it classic quality." (08/2000) 92 points Vinous: "Bright amber-red. Perfumed aromas of dried red currant, apricot skin, almond paste, sweet spices and blood orange. Lively acidity provides clarity and cut on the midpalate, lifting the floral red cherry, tar and spice flavors. The finish is long and nuanced, but the tannins are a ...

95 points Vinous: "Bright pale red. Captivating, intense aromas of sour red cherry, strawberry and minerals plus hints of musk and tar. Rich, dense and very pure, delivering vibrant, saline flavors of red cherry and red berries. Finishes multilayered and long, with lingering floral perfume. A knockout wine, if a little austere in the classic high-acid 1996 mold. (ID)" (12/2018) 91-93 points Wine Advocate: "This wine exhibits a saturated ruby color with purple nuances. Additionally, it is rich, with lots of extract, tannin, and body. The seductive, dark...

1997 Moccagatta "Bric Balin" Barbaresco (1.5L)
New!
93 points Wine Spectator: "Dark ruby-garnet. Very ripe fruit aromas, with meat and coffee. Full-bodied, round and very rich, with loads of opulent toasty oak, berry and light vanilla character. (JS, Web Only-2007)" 91 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "Medium amber-edged red. More complex, less fruit-driven aromas of plum, nuts, game and animal fur. Fatter and sweeter than the Basarin yet less forthcoming today, thanks to firm acidity. Finishes with good thrust and grip, and rich, lush tannins. (ST) 91+" (11/2000) 90 points Wine Advocate: "Tannic and firmly s...

94 points Vinous: "The 1993 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is one of the surprises of this uneven vintage. Freshly cut flowers, red berries and mint are all laced together in a striking, perfumed Barbaresco built on aromatic lift and finesse. This is one of the more mid-weight, feminine Sorì San Lorenzos that Gaja has made, yet the wine's balance is magnificent. The 1993 will drink well for at least another decade. (AG)" (11/2014)

Price: $69.99

93 points Decanter: "Shines for complexity with violet, straw, After Eight mint and chocolate aroma, balsam and cinnamon. Dense palate with velvety tannins and long, lifted acidity, good sucrosity and a savoury finish. Good length. A warming and chocolaty finish, yet fiercely authentic. Fermented with its own yeasts and aged in big Slavonian oak for 15 months (including the malolactic fermentation). (AF) " (01/2023)

94 points James Suckling: "Attractive aromas of citrus peel and red cherries with hints of lavender, crushed walnuts and dry earth. Medium-bodied. Very fine and polished with chalky textured tannins and juicy red berries in the middle. Fresh and balanced with a textural finish." (06/2023) 92 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Autinbej is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Ca' del Baio. Bright, translucent and full of energy, the 2020 impresses with its finesse and nuance. Crushed red berry fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, mint and new leather all grac...

98 points Kerin O'Keefe: "Alpine herb, pressed rose, new leather and black tea aromas lead the nose on the superb Montefico 2019 Riserva. Showing the impeccable class and intensity this cru is celebrated for, it’s youthfully austere but also incredibly savory. The firmly structured palate delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice, almond liqueur and saline mineral notes accompanied by a firm backbone of tightly-woven, close-grained tannins. Bright acidity gives it great aging potential." (01/2024) 98 points The Wine Independent: "Alpine her...

93 points Wine Spectator: " Impressively sculpted. The most tannic of Gaja's three single-vineyard crus. While closed on the nose now, it suggest lots of depth and, in the mouth, this full-bodied wine delivers a smooth ride, layered with flavors of pure fruit, wild berry and earth." (10/1996)

95 points Wine Spectator: "This wine received a "Cellar Selection" designation and ranked #20 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 1988: "Stunning, almost buttery in its richness, smooth, rich and complex, has power and finesse, plus chocolatey richness that can only become greater. Has the fruit of Barbaresco, the finesse and elegance of Bordeaux and the power and intensity of California." (12/1988)

2021 La Ca' Növa "Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina" Barbaresco (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
97 points Vinous: "The 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is a classic. Crushed flowers, salt, white pepper, rose petal and lavender race across the palate. Just bottled, the 2021 is quite nervous, but it conveys striking energy and translucent finesse. The aromatics alone are beguiling. All this needs is time. In other words, it is classic Montefico. (AG)" (09/2023)

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Rose, red berry and star anise aromas align with earthy whiffs of forest floor and new leather. The full-bodied, delicious palate doles out succulent Morello cherry, black raspberry, licorice and chopped mint set against a backbone of firm but refined tannins. It's already gorgeous but will be even better with just a few more years of bottle age. Drink 2022-2030. 2021 La Ca' Növa "Montestefano" Barbaresco (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points Vinous: "The 2021 Barbaresco Montestefano is one of the very best young wines I have tasted here. Dark, rich and intense, but also light on its feet, the 2021 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark red/blue fruit, lavender, licorice, gravel, dried herbs and menthol open with a bit of coaxing. The Montestefano possesses striking mid-palate depth, compelling inner perfume and mind-blowing balance. I loved it. (AG)" (09/2023)
Price: $54.99

92 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco is a very pretty, forward wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Succulent fruit and mid-weight structure give the 2020 tons of immediacy. The straight Barbaresco is not the last word of complexity, but the 2020 is delicious and very easy to drink. Floral and spice overtones punctuate the vibrant finish. The straight Barbaresco is the under the radar gem in this range. Vineyard sites are Faset and Ronchi. What a delightful wine it is. (AG) " (11/2022)
Price: $49.99

96 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is laced with hints of white pepper, kirsch, mint, orange peel and chalk. It offers plenty of Montefico signatures, but with an extra kick of mid-palate pliancy that adds allure as well as immediacy. Best of all, the 2020 will be ready to go in just a few years' time. The 2020 is showing so well today. It's a dynamite wine. (AG)" (10/2023) 93 points Kerin O'Keefe: "Aromas of blue flower, prune, leather and tobacco come to the forefront. The aromas follow over to the full-bodied palate,...

2021 La Ca' Növa Barbaresco (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
94 points Vinous: "The 2021 Barbaresco is exquisite. Bright and delineated, with tons of energy, the 2021 bristles with saline-infused energy. Red berry fruit, blood orange, chalk, mint and white pepper lend tons of energy to this deceptively mid-weight, nervy young Barbaresco. Vineyard sites are Ovello, Cole and Loreto. (AG)" (09/2023)

94 points Vinous: "The 2019 Barbaresco Rabajà-Bas is super-expressive right out of the gate. A beguiling mélange of dark cherry, herbs, menthol, licorice, earthiness and dried flowers gives the 2019 strong savory tones to play off the Nebbiolo fruit. Translucent elegance and power come together beautifully in this deep, structured Barbaresco. Give this a year or two to soften. (AG) " (09/2022)

Fresh acidity lifts the rich flavors and provides great balance." 100 points Kerin O'Keefe: "The drop-dead gorgeous Barbaresco 2019 Asili Riserva from the Produttori del Barbaresco stuns with its extreme finesse and heady scents of wild rose, red berry, camphor, leather and brown spice. Full-bodied and vibrant, the elegant, linear palate delivers red cherry, blood orange, star anise and ground clove alongside youthfully tight but extremely refined tannins. 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota continues this tasting of frankly awe-inspiring wines. Rich, deep and super-expressive, the 2016 hits all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice emerge, but only with great reluctance. The Muncagota is another wine in this range that clearly needs time.(AG)" (10/2020)

95 points Decanter: "This Asili is a bracing Barbaresco of rare savouriness. Do not be deceived by the extremely pale ruby colour and the reserved nose. Aromas of rhubarb, whiffs of wild fowl, balsamic minerality and Parma violets are followed in the mouth by a firm, velvety attack of peony and earthy strawberry. It has integrated racy acidity and a savoury liquorice finish, with the grip of Nebbiolo. Great hallmark Asili. Medium- to full-bodied with wide tannin structure, yet its very fine and evenly distributed across the palate. Lingering and velvety finish. Drink from 2026." (07/2023) 94 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Vallegrande is a classy, elegant wine. Dark cherry, spice, leather, tobacco, incense, rose petal and gravel are all finely cut. 96 points Wine Advocate: "The Conterno Fantino 2016 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda (with 6,500 bottles produced) draws its fruit from a 1.2-hectare site in Monforte d'Alba with silty soils mixed with sand and clay. It opens to bright cherry and dried raspberry that set the tone for the abundant primary fruit that defines the bouquet. Those red berry flavors cede to cola, spice, mint and rosemary essence. There is an almost exotic quality here spurred forward by pressed blue flower and church incense. However, the big takeaway here is the sheer energy...

Full-bodied and utterly delicious, the enveloping, structured palate doles out ripe black cherry, crushed raspberry, baking spice and licorice alongside firm, seasoned tannins." (04/2023) 95 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Montestefano is incredibly shut down today, which I take as a huge positive for a year that yielded relatively open wines. Readers should be in no rush. The 2020 offers plenty of Montest...

95 points Wine Advocate: "The Fausoni zone provides sandy and clay soils, and you get more power here than from the other locations. These vines are 35 to 40 years old, and the 2016 Barbaresco Fausoni lets fly those menthol notes that are so characteristic of this vineyard in Neive. Slightly more balsamic in its aromatic profile than the other Barbarescos, this expression of Nebbiolo, sitting sur lies for two years, shows a very different tannic feel in a wine that offers surprising freshness and purity. Those minty Neive notes, its direct and linear nat...

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Red berry, violet, forest floor, vanilla and balsamic aromas of menthol and camphor slowly appear on this stunning, radiant red along with whiffs of charcuterie. The vibrant, focused palate is young and taut but already impeccably balanced, evoking juicy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and cool mint framed in firm acidity and tightly knit but fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. It's already fantastic but will hold for even more complexity. (KO)" (09/2019) 96 points Wine & Spirits: "This wine leads an impressive set...

100 points James Suckling: "This is really muscular and really powerful. It is amazing. Full-bodied, yet tight and super structured with incredible power and super toned tannins. It goes on for minutes. The greatest Barbaresco ever from here? I love the strength with fruit finesse. I don’t remember tasting a young Asili like this. Give this a lot of time to come together. One for the cellar. " (04/2020) 97 points Wine Advocate: "Packaged in its distinctive red label, the 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a rich and profound wine with incredible depth an...

I liked this for its more tension-packed and energetic feel and stony texture. Drink 2025-2040. 95 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Asili is one of the most beautiful, pure wines I have ever tasted from Ca' del Baio. Lifted aromatics and bright red-toned fruits are classic Asili signatures. The tannins will need a bit of time to soften, but all the elements are impeccably balanced. This is impressive stuff, and a gorgeous wine. - By Antonio Galloni on September 2023" (09/2023) 94 points James Suckling: "Notes of spiced cherries and dried wild strawberries with dried rosemary, lilac and bark. 96 points Decanter: "Full of restraint on the nose, with smoky woodland, macerated flowers and chocolate wrapped up in a fresh, elegant redcurrant fruit. Very savoury on the palate, with fresh acidity and velvety, chewy, youthful tannins which are extremely precise and woven into the finish. It's not an easy wine now due to the firmness of the structure, but it shows quality in terms of texture and liquorice length to consider it for the long haul. Massolino owns 2ha of 50-year-old vines in Albesani at 200m with a southwest exposition. The wine ferments ...

99 points Kerin O'Keefe: "Combining power, intensity, class and great fruit, Produttori’s 2019 Montestefano Riserva is a phenomenal wine and a quintessential expression of this fantastic cru. It opens with heady aromas of new leather, Alpine herb, pressed rose, ripe dark-skinned berry and forest floor. It has the most Barolo-like structure of all the firm’s crus, delivering ripe Morello cherry, succulent raspberry, licorice and tobacco alongside a network of firm tannins that are more reminiscent of Serralunga than Barbaresco. A magnificent wine, with in...

97 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco Fausoni takes all the elegance of the 2019 and turns up the dial one more notch. Deep and explosive, the 2020 captures all the best this vintage had to offer. A rush of dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol, salt, lavender and rose petal builds as the 2020 saturates every corner of the palate. Here, too, the balance of fruit, acid and tannin is simply masterful. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol race across the palate as the 2020 shows off its obvious pedigree. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of spice, balsamic-infused nuances that build into the palate-staining finish. The 2020 is shaping up to be truly magnificent. 96 points Wine Advocate: "This wine usually falls somewhere in the middle of the Riserva continuum (starting with the most lithe and elegant wine and ending with the most powerful) presented by Produttori del Barbaresco in this knockout series of nine single-vineyard expressions. The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is another personal favorite. This group of Ovello, Rio Sordo, Asili and Rabajà (that sweet spot of neighboring vineyard sites in Barbaresco) is especially profound in 2015, striking a careful balance between elegance against power.
