91 points John Gilman: "The 1996 Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil “Vieilles Vignes” is the first wine I have ever tasted from Domaine Taluau and I was quite impressed. Monsieur Taluau started with a couple of hectares of vines in 1970 and has planted more on his estate as the years have allowed; he was joined full-time at the domaine by his daughter Véronique and her husband, Thierry Foltzenlogel in 1993. The domaine’s ’96 Vieilles Vignes bottling of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil is deep and complex on the nose, offering up scents of dark berries, cassis, tree ba...

2021 Domaine les Pins "Les Rochettes" Bourgueil
Top Pick!
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is young and structured, with complex tannins and vibrant black fruits. Its juicy character has density from the tannins that will soften. *Best Buy* (RV)" (03/2023) K&L Notes: A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight to drink. Domaine les Pins has been family run for five generatio...

Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire. All his hand-harvested cuvées are based on vine age and soil composition, and the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with a light fining and no filtration before bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot planted in 1934, has power, depth and grace; this, their flagship wine, will improve for the next 7-9 years but can be enjoyed now for those of you who like a mouthful of wine.

2021 Aurore Dezat Sancerre Rouge
Top Pick!
The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is home to more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically and empha...

91 points James Suckling: " Juicy and playful with notes of dark cherries, stones and dried leaves. Medium-bodied with fine yet firm tannins and fresh acidity. Balanced and lively with a racy character and a pleasant touch of spices and stones kicking in at the finish. From organically grown grapes." (02/2024) K&L Notes: From a more than 22-hectare estate run by Sylvain Bruneau and his wife Angélique.

94 points Vinous: "From vines planted on clay-limestone in 1904, the 2021 Les Mémoires is fragrant, refined and long. It offers up rich concentration within an elegant, rather delicate package. As you'd expect from a wine of this age, it's youthful and bright, with primary fruit aromas of redcurrant alongside florals, black olive and even a whiff of wood smoke. There's certainly depth and substance of tannin, but they melt in your mouth. The finish is refined and assured, with scintillating acidity providing a fabulous backbone. (RG)" (12/2023) K&L Not...

2022 Franck Millet Sancerre Rouge (Previously $23) (Previously $23)
Top Pick!
The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage, when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present their wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm, and affordability. The low-alcohol Millet Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir, partially barrel aged, and absolutely delicious. Aromas of cherries and purple flowers give way to a vibrant, crunchy red-fruited palate with just a enough tannins to balance out the juicy fruit.

Vigneron by way of butcher, Pascal Janvier is one of those souls destined to make wine, despite himself. Fortunately, he wised up at age thirty and yielded to his inevitable fate. Today, Pascal and his wife Dominique farm a total of nine hectares in the department of the Sarthe in the Val du Loir, a tiny, stony hillside along the Loir River (a tributary of the Loire River), north of Vouvray that is also the most northerly - and coldest - of the regions of the Loire. The "Cuvée du Rosier" is 100% Pineau d'Aunis from 25-year-old vines planted to 1.6 ha of ...

Bernard worked as an advisor to the Tours laboratory and studied in Beaune before returning to the Loire and starting his own project on just two hectares in 1975. Now holding 32 hectares throughout Chinon (about 90% of which are planted with Cabernet Franc, with the rest being Chenin), he produces some truly great wines. The 2018 Les Grézeaux is grown just north of his Les Granges, separated by a river and near the bottom of the slope in Sonnay, on gravel and clay soil. It’s the oldest plot on the estate, with the vines being around 60 years old. The n...

The Château du Hureau is located in the small town of Dampierre-sur-Loire, about four miles east of Saumur and 15 miles west of Chinon. The Château itself is an impressive sight, with its 18th-century Mansard roof and octagonal tower topped by a boar-headed weathercock, from which the domaine takes its name—an hureau is an old, solitary wild boar. Behind the Château sits the winery, which was carved out of the limestone cliffs in the 13th century and overlooks the Loire river. For wine lovers, the cave is even more impressive than the Château, with numer...

A serious, shy man, Philippe Alliet is the proprietor of this small domaine in Cravant-les-Côteaux, location of some of the best Cabernet Franc vineyards in the Loire Valley. Of the 2020 Domaine des Closiers "Les Coudraies" Saumur-Champigny, John Gilman writes: "The Saumur-Champigny "les Coudraies" is one of the estate’s single vineyard wines, made from a selection of the best parcels in this hillside vineyard. The wine is aged in mostly older casks for one year prior to bottling. The 2020 les Coudraies comes in at fourteen percent octane and offers up a simply gorgeous bouquet of red and black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of tree bark, a complex base of soil tones, juniper berry, a touch of cedar and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a rock solid core of fruit, firm, buried tannins, excellent focus and grip and a long, complex and very, very promising finish." A chalky spine holds the finish, allowing another wave of fruit to kick in. Solid. (JM)" (11/2018)

90 points Vinous: "The 2017 Clos de la Côte is a savory, rich and oaky Cabernet Franc that's starting to show some early development. The mouthfeel is round, full and supple thanks to two years' maturation in barrel while there's good concentration of fruit. It's an impressive style offering ripeness without richness as well as expensive oak-derived vanilla nuances. There's a light sense of tension that comes from its chalky bedrock and the vintage. Of the 2015 Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny "Les Poyeux", Wine Advocate writes: "The 2015 Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux offers a clear, fresh and elegant but a bit too oaky bouquet for my personal taste. On the palate, this is a generous, charmingly fruity, lush and silky-textured Cabernet with silky, seamless but vibrant-crunchy tannins and a long, fresh and salty-mineral finish. This is an excellent red with great aging potential. (SR)" (10/2021)
