90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is young and structured, with complex tannins and vibrant black fruits. Its juicy character has density from the tannins that will soften. *Best Buy* (RV)" (03/2023) K&L Notes: A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight to drink. Domaine les Pins has been family run for five generatio...

97 points Decanter: "A dazzling core of intense cassis and blackberry aromatics with an opulent, mouthwatering texture and a rich, juicy ripe fruit concentration. Beautifully elegant with a soft cushion of velvet tannins and a long, beguiling finish. (DWWA)" (06/2023) K&L Notes: The Chateau de Chaintres was established in the mid-17th century. The surrounding vineyards were planted by the Oratorian monks of the Notre Dame des Ardilliers, when they constructed a walled vineyard adjacent to the château. 94 points Vinous: "From vines planted on clay-limestone in 1904, the 2021 Les Mémoires is fragrant, refined and long. It offers up rich concentration within an elegant, rather delicate package. As you'd expect from a wine of this age, it's youthful and bright, with primary fruit aromas of redcurrant alongside florals, black olive and even a whiff of wood smoke. There's certainly depth and substance of tannin, but they melt in your mouth. The finish is refined and assured, with scintillating acidity providing a fabulous backbone. (RG)" (12/2023) K&L Not...

The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is home to more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically and empha...

Bernard worked as an advisor to the Tours laboratory and studied in Beaune before returning to the Loire and starting his own project on just two hectares in 1975. Now holding 32 hectares throughout Chinon (about 90% of which are planted with Cabernet Franc, with the rest being Chenin), he produces some truly great wines. The 2018 Les Grézeaux is grown just north of his Les Granges, separated by a river and near the bottom of the slope in Sonnay, on gravel and clay soil. It’s the oldest plot on the estate, with the vines being around 60 years old. The n...

The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage, when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present their wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm, and affordability. The low-alcohol Millet Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir, partially barrel aged, and absolutely delicious. Aromas of cherries and purple flowers give way to a vibrant, crunchy red-fruited palate with just a enough tannins to balance out the juicy fruit.

The Château du Hureau is located in the small town of Dampierre-sur-Loire, about four miles east of Saumur and 15 miles west of Chinon. The Château itself is an impressive sight, with its 18th-century Mansard roof and octagonal tower topped by a boar-headed weathercock, from which the domaine takes its name—an hureau is an old, solitary wild boar. Behind the Château sits the winery, which was carved out of the limestone cliffs in the 13th century and overlooks the Loire river. For wine lovers, the cave is even more impressive than the Château, with numer...

90 points Vinous: "The fruit for the 2020 Les Varennes du Grand Clos comes from a site where the top of the slope is mainly clay and limestone while the bottom tends to be sandier. The result is a focused style with attractive, precise aromatics—think violet and both black and red cherry. Cool fermentation temperatures preserve and highlight its aromatic lift. Racy, fresh and bright, tannins provide structural framework, giving this wine drive and frame. (RG) " (12/2023)

Winemaker Philippe Gilbert was a playwright in his early life (one of his productions, a contemplation on the horrors of the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia, was performed in the U.S.). His winemaking seems to be informed by his life as a writer-narrative and full of tension. Vigneron by way of butcher, Pascal Janvier is one of those souls destined to make wine, despite himself. Fortunately, he wised up at age thirty and yielded to his inevitable fate. Today, Pascal and his wife Dominique farm a total of nine hectares in the department of the Sarthe in the Val du Loir, a tiny, stony hillside along the Loir River (a tributary of the Loire River), north of Vouvray that is also the most northerly - and coldest - of the regions of the Loire. The "Cuvée du Rosier" is 100% Pineau d'Aunis from 25-year-old vines planted to 1.6 ha of ...

90 points Vinous: "The 2022 Sancerre Rouge is a gently styled, savory Pinot Noir with creamy red fruit and spice. It's light to medium-bodied with a richness of fruit on the mid-palate and succulent tannins. The 2022 is satisfying even at this early stage. (RG)" (07/2024) K&L Notes: The Vacheron vineyards are all close to the village of Sancerre itself and have been in the family for 9 generations. Today, this domaine is run by two cousins, the Messieurs Vacheron. Both have sons studying viticulture to carry on the family tradition. The vineyards cover...

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2020 Domaine des Closiers "Les Coudraies" Saumur-Champigny (95JG, 94DC, 93RP, 92VN). John Gilman: "The Saumur-Champigny "les Coudraies" is one of the estate’s single vineyard wines, made from a selection of the best parcels in this hillside vineyard. The wine is aged in mostly older casks for one year prior to bottling. The 2020 les Coudraies comes in at fourteen percent octane and offers up a simply gorgeous bouquet of red and black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of tree bark, a complex base of soil tones, juniper berry, a touch of cedar and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a rock solid core of fruit, firm, buried tannins, excellent focus and grip and a long, complex and very, very promising finish. This is a great bottle of Saumur-Champigny in the making!" (07/2022)
