91 points John Gilman: "The 1996 Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil “Vieilles Vignes” is the first wine I have ever tasted from Domaine Taluau and I was quite impressed. Monsieur Taluau started with a couple of hectares of vines in 1970 and has planted more on his estate as the years have allowed; he was joined full-time at the domaine by his daughter Véronique and her husband, Thierry Foltzenlogel in 1993. The domaine’s ’96 Vieilles Vignes bottling of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil is deep and complex on the nose, offering up scents of dark berries, cassis, tree ba...

2021 Domaine les Pins "Les Rochettes" Bourgueil
Top Pick!
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is young and structured, with complex tannins and vibrant black fruits. Its juicy character has density from the tannins that will soften. *Best Buy* (RV)" (03/2023) K&L Notes: A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight to drink. Domaine les Pins has been family run for five generatio...

Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire. All his hand-harvested cuvées are based on vine age and soil composition, and the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with a light fining and no filtration before bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot planted in 1934, has power, depth and grace—it's no wonder why it's their flagship wine.

2022 Franck Millet Sancerre Rouge
Top Pick!
The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage, when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present their wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm, and affordability. The low-alcohol Millet Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir, partially barrel aged, and absolutely delicious. Aromas of cherries and purple flowers give way to a vibrant, crunchy red-fruited palate with just a enough tannins to balance out the juicy fruit.

2021 Aurore Dezat Sancerre Rouge
Top Pick!
The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is home to more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically and empha...

91 points James Suckling: " Juicy and playful with notes of dark cherries, stones and dried leaves. Medium-bodied with fine yet firm tannins and fresh acidity. Balanced and lively with a racy character and a pleasant touch of spices and stones kicking in at the finish. From organically grown grapes." (02/2024) K&L Notes: From a more than 22-hectare estate run by Sylvain Bruneau and his wife Angélique.

Established over 50 years ago, the 4th generation of the Denis family now runs this operation. Julien is the winemaker, Stephane in charge of the viticulture and Vincent oversees the administration and sales. Over the last few decades the property has grown from 5 to 80 hectares that stretch across the appellation including some very select parcels in the Coteaux du Layon (home of one of the region's great dessert wines). The Anjou Villages is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc grown on volcanic soils. This soil imparts a warmth tha...

The Vacheron vineyards are all close to the village of Sancerre itself and have been in the family for 9 generations. Today, this domaine is run by two cousins, the Messieurs Vacheron. Both have sons studying viticulture to carry on the family tradition. The vineyards cover 34 hectares with two principal soil types; "silex" and "caillotte" or chalk. Organic viticulture has been a goal of the family for a number of years; as of 2003, the entire estate is certified organic. A serious, shy man, Philippe Alliet is the proprietor of this small domaine in Cravant-les-Côteaux, location of some of the best Cabernet Franc vineyards in the Loire Valley. Considered by many to be one of the finest producers in Chinon, Alliet is part of a new generation of Loire winemakers dedicated to low yields, optimally ripe fruit, and fastidious vineyard management. Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2018 Bernard Baudry "Les Clos Guillot" Chinon (97VN, 94JG) and 1-bottle of 2018 Manoir de la Tête Rouge "L'Enchentoir" Saumur-Puy-Notre-Dame (95RP). Of the 2018 Bernard Baudry "Les Clos Guillot" Chinon, Vinous writes: "The 2018 Chinon Clos Guillot is a rich, focused powerhouse that's firm and direct, with dark blackberries and smoky notes. If we lived in an ideal world, this would be aged before releasing, as it's ripe yet tight and tannic, with the limestone soils providing grip along the sides of the mouth and a sense of direction. Lengthy, serious and complex, leaving the mouth full of dark berry fruit, spice and tea leaves. A baby. (RG)" (10/2021)

Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2002 Pierre et Catherine Breton Chinon "Picasses" (92JG, 91WS) and 1-bottle of 2015 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge. Of the 2002 Pierre et Catherine Breton Chinon "Picasses", John Gilman writes: "Their 2002 version is drinking splendidly today, delivering a refined aromatic constellation of red and black cherries, a touch of bell pepper, tree bark, dark soil tones, saddle leather, menthol and an exotic hint of red curry in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and well-balanced, with a lovely core of fruit, fine focus and grip, tangy acids, still a dollop of backend tannin and a long, well-balanced finish. There is just a whisper of brett in this wine, but it is very minor and to my palate, not even a distraction, but people have different tolerances. " (05/2023)
