Champaigne

Champagne

Here you'll find all the familiar and famous producers at very competitive prices, but even more exciting is the smaller grower-producers that we offer. K&L imports many of these grower-producer Champagnes directly, saving you a bunch of money that would otherwise end up in the pocket of an importer or distributor. The folks are able to control the entire process of making their Champagnes, since they do the vineyard work as well as the winemaking. In addition to the Champagne selection shown below, we operate a Champagne Club that you don't want to miss.

2002 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart" Brut Champagne (Previously $180) (Previously $180)
Top Pick!
98 points James Suckling: "Very impressive depth and detail here. The freshness is staggering. Citrus and grilled-hazelnut aromas lead to a palate that has a very concentrated, slightly creamy and taut feel. Super long and dense with lemon curd, white peaches and a toasty build to the finish. Superb! Drink or hold." (07/2018) 98 points Decanter: "Subtle nose of lemon-spiked raw pastry and a harmonious palate of incredible finesse. Scented and perfumed notes of lemon balm, shortbread and lemon zest fill the mind and senses. Utter elegance and happiness ...

Ariston Aspasie "Réserve" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
Don't let the name change fool you, this is the same great Champagne that used to be called "Carte Blanche". The Ariston Aspasie reserve is made of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 30% Meunier. A balanced cuvée in every way, this Champagne is clean and powerful at once. It has a natural toasty quality from spending five full years on the lees, and plenty of refreshing zip from the far northern location of the vineyards. No bottle in our inventory transports me to Champagne like this one. It is as true to the terroir and as pure as anything I could wish...

Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer that we import, or even carry, from Champagne, at just 7.5 acres. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to négociants—his production is just one thousand cases a year total. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and his hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and, although small, it is diverse. He farms 22 plots in eight different villages. Among these are some of the oldest vines i...

Bollinger "Special Cuvée" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, 15% Meunier sourced from more than 300 crus, including 85% grands and premiers crus; 15% fermented in old oak barrels. The complexity and richness of Special Cuvée is unparalleled among the entry non-vintage blends of every Champagne house, short of ascending to the mesosphere of Krug. Its grand recipe explains why, built on incredible depth of 50%-60% reserves. Triumphant complexity is a given at Bollinger, but it’s the dynamic freshness and vitality that really set it apart as one of the most afforda...

Baron-Fuenté "Esprit" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
92 points Wine Spectator: "Creamy in texture, with mouthwatering acidity enlivening rich notes of bread dough, black currant, lemon curd, pastry cream and blanched almonds. Shows fine balance and length. (AN)" (12/2012) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "As with other Champagnes in the producer's range, this blends three vintages, giving it extra richness and depth of fruit flavor. Its toasty edge suggests it has also been aged in bottle. Attractive and ripe, it's ready to drink. (RV)" (06/2017) 90 points James Suckling: "A tangy and fruity Champagne with ...

Pierre Mineral Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
This balanced, elegant Champagne is composed of 30% Chardonnay, 60% Pinot Noir and 10% Meunier. The grapes are all from the Gonet family's estate, spread from the southernmost 1er cru of Vertus to the valley of the Marne. It is a gorgeous wine to toast with: bready, vibrant and flavorful. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
Price: $34.99

The Ariston's vineyards are vastly different than those of the other blanc de blancs producers that we carry. The steeper slopes, less chalk and more fossils in the soil of Brouillet make for a rich, creamy style of Chardonnay Champagne that will appeal to just about anyone. This is one of my favorite toasting Champagnes. All of the flavors are up-front; it is open-knit and fun. It is a perfect way to start a party. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé Champagne
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "Cinnamon and dried nutmeg add to the experience of bread dough and rose petals. Flavorful on the medium-bodied palate and finely poised with bright acidity. Medium-long on the finish." (05/2019) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The palest of rosés, this is an elegant, structured wine. Its dryness is balanced by the fine apple and red-currant fruits and the strong sense of minerality. Fragrant and lightly structured, this fine bottling is ready to drink." (12/2020) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A lively rosé Champagne with a pleasin...

Krug "Grande Cuvée" 168 ème Édition Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "A gentle gold with discreet yet persistent mousse and aromatics of spring meadows, lemon sherbet and barley sugar; the wine is pure and softly powerful, youthful energy finely poised, somewhat cautious after so many years in the chalky cellars. The reserve wines, Pinot Noir from Verzenay and Chardonnay from Avize especially, are subtle in support, vivacious despite their relative maturity, contributing to an ensemble which is hitherto dominated by red fruit, courtesy of the superb Pinot Noir, and a colourful tension. Behind that ther...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "From a great vintage, this wine both reflects the year and also shows the producer's trademark crisp style that keeps the wine's natural acidity. That approach lends itself to aging and this wine, now 11 years old, is still intensely fresh. It only just shows signs of maturity and toast. That means it will age further... (RV)" (12/2019) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Notes of oyster shell, graphite and spice are a fresh and aromatic entry for this vibrant Champagne, layered with firm, focusing acidity and flavors of poached apri...

2010 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
98 points James Suckling: "A firm and vivid Champagne with a precise, focused palate. Full-bodied and dry. It’s very layered and bright with light pineapple, peach, praline, cooked-apple and stone aromas and flavors. It’s very subtle and focused at the end. Integrated with richness and high acidity. Good depth. Reminds me of the 1995. Very clean. Solid. Lovely to drink already, but will age nicely." (07/2020) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "The new release of this iconic Champagne shows its richness to perfection. The floral aromas lead to a wine that has ...

2012 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
98 points John Gilman: "The 2012 vintage of Cristal is the first to be produced entirely from Demeter-certified, biodynamically-farmed fruit, which is a landmark for Maison Roederer. The future is now here! I have been looking forward to this release of this vintage of Cristal for a few years now, but sadly found myself not in top form to appreciate its debut, as I was so suffering from jet lag after my three weeks on the road in November that my energy level was no match for this beautiful young wine. The 2012 Cristal is its customary cépages of sixty p...

2008 Philippe Gonet "Cuvée Belemnita" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Top Pick!
93 points Decanter: "Sourced from Chardonnay vines situated in the Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru and planted in 1929, Belmnita has a sappy and well-delineated palate offering vibrant white fruits, apple and citrus fruit flavours. There's a lot to like in this crystalline, pure and clean Champagne. Dosage: 3g/l. (YC)" (11/2019) K&L Notes: This wine comes from one plot of Chardonnay in the world famous village of Mesnil, a plot planted by the great grandfather of Chantal and Pierre Gonet (the current proprietors) back in 1929. The vines go deep into the Bele...

2007 Thiénot "Black Ball" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne (Previously $120) (Previously $120)
Top Pick!
Absolutely incredible opportunity on this creamy, supple Blanc de Blancs that still has great focus and precision and superior, long, mineral finish. Like all of the Thienot vintage wines, this bottling is entirely estate grown from the family's nearly 70 acres of vines.
Price: $59.99

100% Pinot Noir with no malolactic fermentation. Strawberry and raspberry nose with toasty notes and jammy scents. On the palate, Morello cherries, a touch of cranberry, ample structure, and a racy finish. Lovely as an aperitif or with white meats such as chicken or pork.

2007 Taittinger "Comtes de Champagne" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Top Pick!
98 points James Suckling: "This is a step up from the linear and fresh 2006. It shows subtle depth and power with a dense block of vivid fruit that's highlighted with lemon zest, green apples and hints of white peaches. Just the right amount of praline and nuts on the nose. Fine and tight bead give the Champagne a luxurious mouthfeel. One for now or the cellar. Drink or hold. " (12/2018) 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Always one of the great Champagnes, this comes from a year that is generally regarded as good but not great. And yet, with this Champagne i...

This Champagne is made entirely from selected grand cru estate fruit from the village of Mesnil. It is fermented and aged in 600-liter new-oak casks before being bottled and aged four years on the lees. It has a super rich nose of vanilla, sourdough toast, and Mesnil minerals. In the mouth it's very racy and dry, not nearly as broad as the rich nose suggests. I think this is one of the ultimate lobster Champagnes in our stock, and will repay five years of cellaring with a gorgeous drink. If you love Selosse's Origine and Tarlant's Cuvée Louis, this is on...

About this producer: "In the 19th century the founder of the family, Marie Arsène Brochet, would carefully select the best vinestocks in the vineyard and identify them with a touch of paint on the trunk. Already, her primary focus was the search for a very special quality and typicity of terroir. Only those vinestocks marked with paint for three years in succession were selected for subsequent use in grafting. Through this selection massale technique, the Pinot Noir d’Ecueil has developed its exceptional character. This grape varietal is now used for ¾...

Baron-Fuenté "Grande Réserve" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
90 points John Gilman: "Baron-Fuenté’s non-vintage Brut bottling is composed of a blend of sixty percent Pinot Meunier, thirty percent chardonnay and ten percent Pinot Noir, with all the vins clairs all fermented in stainless steel. It is a full malo wine and is aged three years sur latte, being finished with a dosage of nine grams per liter. I am not sure if this is the same release I reported on last year or a new cuvée, but the wine is showing very well. The bouquet offers up a fine constellation of white peach, apple, lovely Meunier floral tones, a t...

Billecart-Salmon "Brut Réserve" Champagne
Back In Stock!
95 points Decanter: "A fine straw-gold colour with great finesse of bubble flow and mousse. Joyful aromas of apple blossom and ripe pear. A full, defined palate demonstrates richness that will help to give this a long life in the cellar. (ME)" (02/2017) 95 points James Halliday: "An uncommon blend of 40% pinot meunier and 30% each of pinot noir and chardonnay, with 40% reserve wines, fermented in a mix of tank and use of aged oak barrels. Deliberate choice of meunier is the key to its drink any time soon style, which combining elegance, finesse and gre...

100 points Wine & Spirits: "If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the '02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off th...

92 points James Suckling: "Very tangy and energetic with apple and lemon-curd aromas and flavors. Bright and exciting. Tight and full-bodied. Layered and solid. Dried fruit with an electric finish. Zingy is the word." (07/2019) 92 points Decanter: "One of the great signatures of the region, its calligraphy flowing with elegance, panache and balance, the last reflected in the equal proportions of the three great varieties of Champagne. A flamboyant straw gold lustre, and an immediately seductive nose, encyclopaedic in its indulgence. Nougat, praline, wh...

92 points Decanter: "50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier from 100 villages in all, and including 30% reserves from 10 vintages back to 1995; a small proportion now being produced with malolactic. Black Label remains the confident barometer of Lanson, and Hervé Dantan’s first blend is a class act, a resounding statement of his talent in preserving the style and integrity of the house while meticulously polishing the edges. It’s a very important cuvée in the grand scheme of Champagne: one of the best and most consistent of the bargain set. (TS)"...

This fantastic, elegant, very dry rosé is composed of 90% Mesnil Grand Cru Chardonnay and 10% red wine from Pinot Noir grown in the 1er cru of Vertus. The Gonet family has crafted a wonderful, crisp rosé that has the elusive strawberry fruit that fans of the subtle style of Champagne rosé cannot get enough of. This is an incredible deal at the price. - Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer

If you haven't had the tiny production Champagne, this is a rare opportunity to do so. They only make 14 barrels of this wine, and it is the last of the production from their oldest vines, which were destroyed in the hail of 2003. We only received 36 bottles of this, which is entirely from one vintage, although not labeled as so. It is composed of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier that is barrel fermented, but not aged in oak. They bottle in February at Aspasie, so this wine saw less than six months in barrel. It is incredibly rich, powerful...

Canard-Duchêne Brut Champagne

91 points Decanter: "The smouldering smokiness of reduction deliciously colours the nose. Notes of yeast, cardamom, honey, and fine sourdough on the creamy palate with restrained richness and steely grip. (AK)" (10/2020) Wine Enthusiast: "This blend of mainly red grapes, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier offers attractively crisp apples and pears, with a fine layer of acidity. It is balanced and ready to drink. (RV)" (12/2018) Wine Spectator: "A fresh, open-knit Champagne, with a subtle smoky overtone and modest notes of toast, golden apple, spun honey an...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by fully 40% old reserve wines, the new release of Charles Heidsieck's NV Brut Réserve was disgorged earlier this year. It's showing very well, opening up in the glass with notes of green apple, dried white flowers, pear, candied peel and walnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack and a racier, tighter-knit core than either the 2012- or 2010-base renditions, displaying good concentration and underlying richness. A small version of our best deal in bubbles—direct from the Aristons. This all estate-grown wine is aged for an incredible five years on the lees before release, giving real depth and an honest, toasty flavor. It is composed of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 30% Meunier, and is fermented in stainless steel with full malolactic. This is serious Champagne that keeps getting better every year. Aromas of freshly toasted bread and baked apples. If you have not yet tried it, you're missing out. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

This Champagne is composed of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, exclusively from estate grown, organic vineyards in the Aube department. This wine shows the electric, refreshing character of this great vintage now so don't miss out on this unbelievable value!

92 points Wine Spectator: "There's an open-knit, almost airy feel to this vibrant Champagne, which carries a concentrated range of juicy pear and black raspberry fruit, with hints of crystallized honey. Shows gingersnap biscuit and verbena flavors on the chalky texture, gaining momentum on the racy, zesty finish. (AN)" (10/2015) 90 points Vinous: "Light gold. Ripe pear, honey and tangerine on the fragrant nose and in the mouth. Fleshy, broad and rather powerful, with a touch of bitter quinine adding a dry edge. Closes smooth and subtly spicy, with good...

(AN)" (11/2017) 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Pretty notes of toasted bread, yeast, orange peel and white peach introduce rich, full-bodied and borderline creamy flavors that are shaped by a relatively soft effervescence before terminating in an agreeably dry, clean and focused finale. This is drier than the 7...

2002 Deutz "Cuvée William Deutz" Brut Champagne
Back In Stock!
96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Predominantly made from Pinot Noir with Chardonnay and a little bit of Pinot Meunier, the 2002 Cuvée William Deutz Brut Millésimé is another highlight of the estate, if not the appellation. The bouquet of this Millésime is bright, very clear, fresh, aromatic and complex, whereas on the palate this is the quintessence of finesse, subtlety, purity and elegance. Sure, this is a structured wine, but it is made like a perfectly shaped antique Greek statue or a jewel. Everything here is perfectly interwoven and nothing...

It has a distinct scent of wood spice, which carries through the wine and takes it in a sweet, umami direction. A creamy, Rococo Champagne, this would be satisfying with simple dishes like fluke crudo. " (12/2011) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A well-balanced wine, this is poised between fresh fruits and a tangy texture. This Champagne is composed of 1/3 each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. All of the fruit is estate grown from the Ariston's vineyards in Brouillet … La Vallée Brouillet might be my very favorite place in all of Champagne. I love the rolling landscape, the mix of mustard, vineyard and colza fields. But most of all I love the quiet peace of this secluded northwestern part of the region. The rise and evolution of this cuvée over the past 15 years, and particularly since the construction of its dedicated facility in 2007, has showed no sign of slowing today, as Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon continues his fanatical regime of experimenting, tweaking and refining every detail. The interplay of aromatic top notes and Bouzy richness makes for a compelling, open-knit Champagne that is an absolutely joy to taste. This is such a gorgeous and totally distinctive Champagne. I would prefer to give it at least a few more months in bottle, as it is a bit tight today, especially on the finish. Disgorged: April 15, 2019. Champagne always tastes better out of magnum. Paul-Vincent Ariston says that his 25-year-old vines reflect the vintage, but the Prestige, made from vines averaging 60 years, reflect his terroir. He feels that putting a vintage date on this wine would be an insult to his best vineyard plots. This vineyard was destroyed by hail in 2002, so this is the last we'll ever see of the old vines.
