Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

99-100 points James Suckling: "Rather ethereal and so refined with finesse, focus and brightness that provides incredible energy and pedigree. It’s full-bodied with ultra fine tannins that go on and on. Superb presence with tannins that melt into the wine. This is 12.8%. I love the wine. Lots of dark fruit and fresh tobacco. Lead pencil, too. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot and 1% petit verdot." 2010 Margaux, Margaux (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
100 points James Suckling: "This was phenomenal from barrel and remains so. The aromas are spellbinding. It smells like a bouquet of pink roses and then goes to currants, berries and citrus. Full body, with wonderfully refined tannins. It starts discretely and then grows to different levels and dimensions like a slow but big high tide. The texture is so beautiful. Try it in 2020 or beyond." (02/2013) 99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 is a brilliant Chateau Margaux, as one might expect in this vintage. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvign...

100 points James Suckling: "This is muscular yet so well defined and toned. Full-bodied with deep and dense fruit on the palate, yet powerful and rich at the same time. So much sandalwood and blackberry character. Chewy and rich at the finish. This is a warm and generous wine, but the alcohol is just over 13 degrees. Not that high. Love the finish. Extravagant. Magical. Try from 2025." (02/2019) 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bottled in July 2018, it is deep garnet-purple colored and starts off a little closed and reticent, opening out slow...

92 points James Suckling: "The quality of the fruit and tannins are very pretty here. It’s full-bodied, with round velvety texture and a delicious finish. Very impressive." (07/2014) 90-92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Firm tannins, but also ripe, sweet fruits, with a fine balance. While the wine is on the light, fresh side, it does have a good, final structure. (RV)" (04/2010) K&L Notes: At the very top of the Haut-Médoc, embedded in a sea of gravel just next to the Gironde River north of St-Estèphe, sits the anomaly of the Left Bank: Château Coufran, th...

2020 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac 6-Pack in OWC (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
98-99 points James Suckling: "Blackcurrants, orange peel, flowers and tar with hints of graphite. Full-bodied with a creamy texture of exquisitely polished tannins. It goes on and on. Intense flavors at the end, too, with lead pencil and lots of blackberry. Very classic and precise." (05/2021) 95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Ultra-classic notes of blackcurrants, freshly sharpened lead pencil, damp earth, and crushed stone emerge from the 2020 Château Lynch-Bages, which checks in as 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Ve...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Scents of plums, dried herbs, black cherries, currants, and a hint of coffee beans rise from the glass of this dark ruby-colored, pleasant, attractively supple, easy-going 2002. (RP)" (04/2005) K&L Notes: At the very top of the Haut-Médoc, embedded in a sea of gravel just next to the Gironde River north of St-Estèphe, sits the anomaly of the Left Bank: Château Coufran, the "Pomerol of the Médoc," so-called for its high propensity of Merlot vines in a region where Cabernet reigns supreme. While practically all of its Left...

2010 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
92-93 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that shows lots of chocolate, tobacco and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. All there." (04/2011) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From Helene Garcin, this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot displays classic tobacco leaf and smoky barbecue notes along with rich black currants and crushed rocks in a medium to full-bodied, seductive, attractively up-front style. Some Asian plum sauce is also noticeable in this complex, evolved and delicious wine, which can be dru...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This rich wine has a high percentage of Sauvignon Gris in the blend. That softens the acidity and adds perfume as well as a ripe pear and spice character. The wine is intense and full, just hinting at herbal acidity at the end. *Best Buy* (RV)" (10/2020) K&L Notes: Château Bois-Malot is located in St-Loubes and situated on the shoreline of the Dordogne River. The soils are clay and light limestone with a subsoil of red pebbles and clay. The Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Semillon, grown in the Entre-...

Jancis Robinson: "90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lugasson, property of the Bellanger family. 30-year-old vines yielding 50 hl/ha. Two-thirds aged in barrel for 12 months. Clean and direct. With fairly pronounced tannins still. I'm not sure I agree with the Bellangers that this has 12 years' ageing potential but it's certainly a very good effort for the price. 16/20 points (JR)" (11/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Still young and full of bright fruit, this is a juicy wine with acidity and red-fruit flavors. Its vibrant character is lively although it ...

Jancis Robinson: "Rich and thick and flattering. Almost animal it's so ripe but lots of pleasure. A little bit of greenness on the finish but lots to go at." (07/2009) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This primarily Merlot-based wine represents an excellent effort from this property. This deep plum/ruby/purple-tinged hussy boasts plenty of jammy black cherry fruit interwoven with notions of smoke, vanilla, and white chocolate. It is a sexy, up-front, fleshy effort with low acidity as well as abundant fruit, glycerin, and texture. (RP)" (04/2006) Wine ...

93 points James Suckling: "Fragrant and spicy, ripe and juicy with a ton of crushed berry character. The generous, supple tannins nicely support the full body and long, silky finish." (02/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 La Fleur de Boüard is blended of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and is a little youthfully reticent to begin, giving way to provocative crushed rocks, tilled soil, mossy bark and cigar box scents over a core of blueberry compote, black raspbe...

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. Highly aromatic nose of raspberry, redcurrant, graphite, licorice and cedar. Leanish, dry and classic, with firm acidity but less flesh than the '96. Lovely traditionally made claret, with terrific finesse and grip. Still evolving. (ST) 91+" (08/2002) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With massive, huge concentration, excruciating tannin, this earthy, meaty St.-Julien has everything, but it needs to be forgotten for at least 10-15 years. At this tasting, it did not appear to have ...

2018 Lacaussade Saint-Martin Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux
Top Pick!
Wine Enthusiast: "Produced from old vines, this wine offers layers of wood aging, black fruits and warm acidity. Licorice comes from the extraction that shows this wine needs time to soften. *Best Buy* (RV)" (03/2021) K&L Notes: This is a delicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from organic producer Château Lacaussade Saint-Martin. This Right Bank Bordeaux far outperforms its modest price point. The wine is at once powerful, dense, and harmonious. It displays huckleberry and sweet baking spices on the nose with a classic tannin structure and f...

93-94 points James Suckling: "This is so typical of Cabernet. Wow. Full body, round and velvety tannins and lots of earthy, spicy and berry character. Juicy and long. Gorgeous. 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest is Merlot. Not really a second wine of Mouton. Excellent. " (03/2015) 91-94 points Wine Spectator: " *Barrel Tasting* This has a lightly dusty frame, but is plump overall, with delightful plum, raspberry and red currant fruit at the core. Singed alder and vanilla notes are subtle and nicely integrated, with a very elegant feel through the fini...

1998 Haut-Franquet, Moulis
Top Pick!
This Haut-Franquet was discovered by our buyers on a 2017 Bordeaux trip and it has finally arrived. A neighbor of Poujeaux, our buyers were fortunate to get their hands on a limited quantity. While some 1998 Left Bank wines are a bit coarse and tough this—like the Poujeaux—is elegant and fruit driven. Perfect hamburger wine.

2007 Larrivaux, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
At well under $30, this is one of those wines that people will be buying by the case all summer long. Why? Well, with its new-world ripeness of red plum, black raspberry and licorice ropes this is totally crowd pleasing. Drink now and often.
Price: $17.99

This is a property very close to Pauillac, and it's one to watch out for now, and in the future. These wines are well-made, value-driven, with good depth and length. Proprietor Patrick Bernard owns 50 hectares of gravel soils and with the aid of winemaker Xavier Michelet, produces elegant, silky, and vibrant Left Bank wines that won't break the bank.

2016 Fombrauge, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
93-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a perfumed wine, likely thanks to a dollop (7%) of Cabernet Franc. It has ripe fruit characters, pleasant richness and a firm structure. (RV)" (04/2017) 94 points James Suckling: "There’s a very rich and powerful core of red-plum and mulberry aromas and flavors here, delivering an assertive and very shimmery, polished palate. Great tannin texture. Long and regal. Every bit as good as the 2015, but more lively in 2016. " (02/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Fombrauge has come together beautifully during its agin...

2020 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac 6-Pack in OWC (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
98-100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "An estate that has been on fire of late, the 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is another brilliant wine in a succession of brilliant wines. Revealing a dense purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of blac currants, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and violets, it hits the palate with an expansive, rich, yet pure, precise texture that carries fabulous tannins, perfect balance, and a stacked mid-palate. Based on 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc, it's an incredible wine that'...

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A consistently perfect wine every time I've had it, the 2009 Château Pontet-Canet is the greatest wine from this address to date as well as one of the greatest Pauillacs out there. Still youthfully ruby/purple and with a gorgeous perfume of blackcurrants, lead pencil, graphite, crushed rocks, and damp earth, it's still youthful but is just now starting to show more nuance and complexity. Full-bodied on the palate, with a powerful, concentrated mid-palate, incredible depth of fruit, and flawless balance, Bordeaux simply does not g...

2018 Jouanin, Cotes de Castillon
Top Pick!
Thank the emerging region of Cotes de Castillon for this spectacular deal in red Bordeaux. This cuvee shares many qualities of top-flight St-Emilion, with a great sweetness of fruit along with vanilla and spicy notes from new oak. Everyone who loves wine knows it's hard to find a steal in Bordeaux these days, but this wine offers a lot of wine for the money.

2015 La Fleur de Boüard, Lalande-de-Pomerol
Top Pick!
93 points Decanter: "This is excellent quality and among the best of the line-up. There is an impressive balance of flavours combining brambly fruits with gentle smoked almonds and charred cedar black spice, and the alcohol is generous but not intrusive. Always a leading name in Lalande-de-Pomerol, doing an excellent job in 2015. (JA)" (08/2019) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 La Fleur De Bouard is an awesome wine to seek out. Mostly Merlot, it offers a terrific bouquet of cassis and black cherries intermixed with lots of tobacco leaf and lead pencil ...

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Merlot-dominated 2016 By Clinet (there's 5% Cabernet Franc) is a charming, already delicious effort that gives up elegant notes of chocolate-laced plums and dark fruits, notes of leafy herbs and truffle, medium to full body, and a layered, charming mouthfeel. It's a terrific Bordeaux to drink over the coming 7-8 years or so." (02/2019)

1998 Beauchene, Pomerol
Top Pick!
First planted in the 14th century, this vineyard is now 10 hectares and is owned by Charles Leymarie & Sons, in the wine business since 1878. The blend here is 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc, and it's aged in new oak on the recommendations of then-consultant Michel Rolland. The 1998 received 2 stars out of 3 from the respected French wine guide Guide Hachette des Vins.

2000 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet colored with a touch of brick, the 2000 Mouton Rothschild (composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot) boldly bursts from the glass with tantalizing Black Forest cake, dried mulberries, kirsch and blackcurrant pastilles notes plus wafts of iodine, incense, potpourri and cinnamon stick with a hint of cigar boxes. 2010 de Belcier, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "Chocolate, licorice and plums. Some mint and candied violets. Intensely juicy and full-bodied on the palate with pure dark fruit and lots of new wood. Big and structured with firm, yet ripe tannins that still need some time to soften." (02/2013) Wine Enthusiast: "A tough proposition at this young stage, but one which will definitely mature well, if slowly. There's power from tannins and fruit, both promising aging. Dark and dense, this hints at the juicy black fruits to come. (RV)" (05/2013)

1997 Grandis, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
A K&L new discovery in 2020. Originally a hunting lodge, Château Grandis is a little-known estate planted to approximately 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Its gravel and clay-filled limestone soils have been home to vineyards since the early 1700s, but the winery was rebuilt and modernized in 1985, resulting in a great boost in quality of production. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, which is followed by ageing in 100% oak barrels for 12-18 months. This wine is so delicious. Bright ...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I have always held up the 2010 La Pointe as one of the high points of recent vintages of this Pomerol estate. After five years in bottle, it has retained that quintessential Pomerol bouquet with black fruit laced with truffle and a touch of iron filings. The palate is still quite structured, although the tannins appear to have melted slightly since I last encountered it. It leads to an intense graphite finish that might lead you astray to the Left Bank, and the aftertaste remains long and satisfying. This is just...

2018 Hyot, Côtes de Castillon
Top Pick!
90-91 points James Suckling: "Tight and firm young wine with tar and berry flavors that follow through to a medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. " (03/2019) K&L Notes: Located to the west of Castillon-la-Bataille, this vineyard is close in geography and style to Saint-Émilion. The 2018 delivers a rich texture from the ripe Merlot as well as generous, warm berry fruits. At the same time, the wine has a light touch of acidity and a crisp aftertaste.
Price: $13.99

93 points James Suckling: "The aromas of violets and flowers are impressive in this with dark fruit underneath. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and bright finish. Shows beautiful depth and resilience. Drink from 2023." (02/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Tronquoy-Lalande has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed blackberries and black cherries with herbs, cigar box and damp soil. Medium to full-bodied, it offers good concentration and depth with firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and per...

Wine Enthusiast: "This fruity wine, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, is stalky with light tannins and plenty of black-currant fruits. Crisp, and with acidity to balance the fruitiness, it is ready to drink. (RV)" (02/2018) K&L Notes: This is a superb value in Bordeaux, made in collaboration with St-Julien's grand Château Beychevelle. Who says you can't drink great Bordeaux every day? You just have to know where to look! This third wine (of sorts) from Beychevelle always sells out quickly when we get it in stock, so it's one to snatch w...

Best ever from here. Try in 2020." (02/2012) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An inky/purple color is followed by notes of Asian plum sauce, forest floor, creme de cassis, black raspberries a...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This vineyard in the southern part of the Médoc is so close to Bordeaux city that only a small part has been saved from buildings. The wine is worth the effort, rich with fine tannins and wood-aging flavors that sustain the ripe blackberry fruits and smoky character. The wine should age well, ready to drink from 2022. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a tour de force, and one of the all-time great Grand-Puy-Lacostes ever produced, as I hope the 2000 and 2005 will become. This is an inky/purple, beefy, broad, super-rich Pauillac revealing classic creme de cassis notes intermixed with hints of spring flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with sweet tannin, shocking concentration, and layers of fruit, this irresistible 1982 is still an adolescent in terms of its evolution. Anticipated maturity: now-2035. The palate has a very sleek, fine, powerful core of tannins that bring a lot of depth and deliver rich dark-fruit flavor. A classic Meyney. Best since 1961!" (02/2019) 95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Meyney has a very deep color. The bouquet is a stunner, delivering intense, mineral-rich black fruit pixelated to the nth degree. This is extremely focused and conveys the energy of a tightly coiled spring. The ex...

Revealing a vivid purple hue as well as stunning notes of blueberries, cassis, liquid violets, and white truffle, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture, and gorgeous length on the finish. It plays in the more nuanced, elegant end of the spectrum yet still brings ample fruit, rich...

Delicious now but will but better in a year or two." (07/2013) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Although one of the appellation’s more tannic 2004s, the tannin is beautifully balanced by sweet black currant fruit, spring flower, camphor, and licorice notes. This impeccably well-made, medium-bodied Margaux reveals a lovely integration of acidity, tannin, and wo...

1982 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien (Previously $470) (Previously $470)
Back In Stock!
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There is no question that Leoville Poyferre was not making wines at the level of quality they have since 1990. That said, the 1982 is a great wine, no doubt because of the vintage rather than the winemaking at that time. A brilliant effort, it boasts a dense purple color as well as a sweet, flowery bouquet revealing plenty of creme de cassis, plum, and cherry notes, stunning concentration, a boatload of power, sweet tannins (the sweetest and easiest to taste among the St.-Juliens), and a long finish. Although clo...

" (01/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Fruit and tannins come together well in this ripe wine. Its structure will allow it to age while the berry flavors bring a fresh edge. Juicy and fruity, it has fine potential.
