Bordeaux

Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

2012 Barde-Haut, St-Émilion
Top Pick!
93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lots of chocolate, mocha, darker fruits, and dried herb-like notes emerge from the 2012 Château Barde-Haut, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated 2012. It's showing a touch of maturity yet still has plenty of tannins and structure, good mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. I continue to think 2012 was a great vintage for the Right Bank, and this certainly doesn't change my mind." (03/2020) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Offers lovely purity and mouthfeel, with notes of velvety plum, boysenberry and cherry preserves gliding easi...

100 points James Suckling: "The aromas to this are incredible with blueberry, minerals, dried flowers, and stones. It goes to dried meat and spices. Full body and incredibly integrated with blackberry, licorice, and minerals. There's a wonderful purity to this. It goes on for minutes. The quality of tannins is amazing. Seamless. There's an amazing transparency that shows you all the elements of the wine's unique terroir." 2010 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Back In Stock!
Top Pick!
92-93 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that shows lots of chocolate, tobacco and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. All there." (04/2011) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The Haut-Bergey 2010 has a very concentrated bouquet with dense blackberry, briary, crushed stone and tobacco on the nose that unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. There is a lot of extraction here, but it is in tune with the acidity and the structured finish has plenty of vibrant red fruit and energy to see it thr...

Château Bois-Malot is located in St-Loubes and situated on the shoreline of the Dordogne River. The soils are clay and light limestone with a subsoil of red pebbles and clay. The wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and is aged for 18 months in tanks, followed by six months in barrels. If you like framboise you will adore this wine — 2015 was a huge success for this property. As in most years, this wine tastes and smells of raspberries and earth, but with a gentle middle and a soft finish due to the extraordinary v...

92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of glossy, spicy oak and plush, ripe dark plums with hazelnut and tarry nuances, too. The flavorful palate delivers in assertive and bold style with a juicy and intense surge of fruit, holding long into the finish." (02/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A concentrated wine from the Pitray family, who fought in the American Revolution, this has bold tannins and the potential for rich fruit. A powerful wine, it shows plenty of spice as well as ripe black-currant flavors and acidity. *Editors' Choice* (RV)" (02/2019) 88...

2016 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $200) (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $200)
Back In Stock!
99 points Jane Anson: "Muscular but finely-tuned, with a floral, rose-stem edge to Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant flavours that elevates this beyond its surrounding vintages, as is often the case with exceptional 2016s on the Left Bank. Give it time in the glass if you are going near it any time soon, and allow the brambled fruits to appear, with creamy black cherry and damson puree on full display finessed with pencil lead, plum pudding, liqourice and slate-strewn tannins that give a mouth-watering finish. Great stuff, this is one to savour over the long t...

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A consistently perfect wine every time I've had it, the 2009 Château Pontet-Canet is the greatest wine from this address to date as well as one of the greatest Pauillacs out there. Still youthfully ruby/purple and with a gorgeous perfume of blackcurrants, lead pencil, graphite, crushed rocks, and damp earth, it's still youthful but is just now starting to show more nuance and complexity. Full-bodied on the palate, with a powerful, concentrated mid-palate, incredible depth of fruit, and flawless balance, Bordeaux simply does not g...

98 points James Suckling: "Beautiful clarity of fruit with raspberries and currants on the nose. Roses and other flowers too. It's almost hard to describe, but there's a real purity. Full body, with fabulous balance and depth. It has everything in the right place. Best ever?" (02/2013) 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A wine that could easily be mistaken for a First Growth, the 2010 Rauzan-Ségla is an incredibly powerful, full-bodied wine by this estate’s standards, yet it nevertheless holds onto a terrific sense of elegance as well as perfect balance. A huge n...

2012 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
Wine Advocate: "A decent effort in this tough vintage for some of the Médoc wines, Lanessan’s 2012 has some nice suppleness to the tannin, cranberry and black cherry fruit, plum and blackcurrants. It is medium-bodied with earth, herbs and spice. Drink it over the next decade. (RP)" (04/2015) K&L Notes: * A very fruity and tasty style. Another great value from what Robert Parker calls a "consistent property that turns out wines that are often very close to classified-growth quality."

Give this a year or two to come together. " (12/2021) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Bright fruits are sustained by ripe tannins in this wood-aged wine. A line of acidity promises further aging. This structured wine will likely be ready from 2023. (RV)" (03/2022)

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This rich wine is powered by tannins and generous blackberry fruits. It is currently dry, with a firm core. But the wine has weight and will develop well. Revealing a deep ruby/plum hue, the 2020 exhibits extraordinary aromatics of ripe black fruits, scorched earth, cold fireplace, and acacia flowers. An absolute blockbuster on the palate, this structured, full-bodied, massively concentrated Pessac builds incrementally, with ultra-fine tannins, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a great, great finish. 95 points Decanter: "Montrose always takes its time, and this is still very much young and austere but with a commanding presence. It's a classically structured Montrose showing crushed slate, tobacco and bilberry and there's no question that it has plenty of life ahead of it. The tannins are among the most chewy on display so far, the fruit tucked in between the layers of acidity, the overall feel one of subdued power. Give it another few years before opening then settle in for the long haul. (JA)" (12/2017) 95 points James Suckling: "The purity and p...

91 points Decanter: "Pot pourri, dark chocolate powder and black fruit on the nose. Rich and sumptuous, not overly so, but this has depth and chew to the fruit, a round, mouth-filling expression with the emphases on the chalky, chewy tannins. The 2019s can go two ways and this goes for more of a forward confidence, but still keeps the definition. Bright strawberry and herbal black cherry with liquorice, wet stone, slate, chocolate and chalk. Dark, powerful and quietly seductive with toasted elements too. An altogether stronger wine that would benefit fro...

Not to be confused with Château d'Issan or its second wine, Blason d'Issan, this awesome value (from the vintage Jancis Robinson suggests might Bordeaux's best ever) actually hails from a different vineyard than these other d'Issan's. (07/2014) 90-92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Firm tannins, but also ripe, sweet fruits, with a fine balance. While the wine is on the light, fresh side, it does have a good, final structure. 94 points John Gilman: "The 1983 Cantemerle is a superb wine that has been rightly lauded since its initial release way back in 1985. I have had the pleasure to drink this vintage of Cantemerle with frequency over the years, and it has only gotten better and better as it has had a chance to blossom with bottle age, and it is probably now just starting its plateau of peak drinkability. This most recent bottle was utterly classic and even better than the bottle I reported on a while back on my feature on the 1983 vintage, as it wafts from the glass in a fi...

Well made and well balanced with quite a gentle finish that makes it appealing right now. Why wait?" (02/2018) Vinous: "The 2015 Ducluzeau is an attractive, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the red berry, and plum fruit remains fresh. This is a pleasant wine from Bruno Borie's Listrac property. (AG)" (02/2018) Wine Enthusiast: "Firm tannins and ripe fruit give this wine a generous character. W...

2020 Lafleur, Pomerol (1.5L)
Top Pick!

Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and concentrated, with a tightly wound core of fruit framed by rich, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This is another magical bottle from an estate that just seems to do everything right. (WK) " (04/2023) 98 poi...

It has a conservative nose with rosemary and undergrowth scents that open nicely in the glass, but retain a sense of classicism. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, lightly spiced red berry fruit, sage and white pepper, quite persistent on the finish, which feels very pure.
