This is the Thompson Brothers foray into the world of blending. It's also proof that they've got some of the absolute best palates in the business. They seem to be getting access to stocks where others struggle, and this little vatting of over 8-year-old malts is one of the most intriguing and delicious malts on our shelves at any price point. SRV5 refers to Station Road Vat 5, the wooden vessel where this whisky is mingled before bottling. The Dornoch boys bottle in very small batches and the source material is of the highest quality. While the specif...

The beauty of the Thompson Brothers is that they're willing to take risks. This offering is indeed a risky proposition for a bottler, the very reason the big guys were willing to let it go. On paper it reads like a very expensive blended scotch. But why add an age statement, when a 12-year-old Johnnie Walker is a fraction of the price? The age statement tells the entire story here and our friends at Dornoch care little for artificial labels and quality statements, all they care about is getting damn good whisky into your glass for an incredible price. So...

This shockingly delicious high proof blanco has come completely out of left field. From the relatively unknown Agave Conquista Distillery, it delivers a high proof blanco experience in a completely transparent way. The agave is organically farmed, estate-grown and additive-free. After roasting in brick ovens, it's fermented with only native yeast in stainless steel tanks before being double distilled on small pots and bottled at high proof in liters. Expect classic Lowland aromas and a crispy yet robust mouthfeel.

We've had a roller coaster of a relationship with Single Grain whisky at K&L. The redheaded stepchild of Scotch, it's long been a category requiring significant amounts of education. If it wasn't super old and cheap most people turned their noses up at it after being ingrained with the pre-conception that good scotch is single malt, hard stop full stop. But occasionally we come across a barrel so unique that it defies those pre-conceptions. This absolutely monster cask is only the second grain we've ever sold that was aged in sherry and comes from the no...

This lovely Tormore will certainly be the last thing most people consider, but for the lucky ones who take the plunge, it will be undoubtedly be the sleeper of the whisky season. The gorgeoous distillery is such a welcome site after hours on the A95 working your up the River Spey. The striking copper roof and stone balconies makes it one of Scotland's most attractive. It is infact one of Scotland's youngest single malt distillery, the first new distillery built in the 20th century, designed by Alexander Cullen for Long John Ltd, founders of Ben Nevis dis...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The newest blended whisky offering from Hibiki is burnished gold in the glass and has a bold aroma that mixes vanilla, fresh pear and a hint of smoke. The smokiness comes forward at the first sip, wrapping around a core of oak and vanilla custard and finishing long, with a mouthwatering bitter chocolate note. *Wine Enthusiast Best of 2016* (KN)" (03/2016) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Poised and complex, with typically lifted fruitiness: strawberry ice cream, pineapple, peach, balanced by delicate oak, bamboo shoot-like delica...

This lovely lowland distillery is one of the closest historical distilleries to the city of Glasgow and you might get lucky and see a head of Highland cattle that occasionally graze on the well-manicured lawns if you make the short trek out to Clydebank. Like most Lowland distillers Auchentoshan does a proper triple distillation leaving a finer spirit with fewer impurities and a soft sweet malty character. The distillery was founded in 1823 and operated continuously until being completely rebuilt in the late 1960s. In 1984, the famed whisky maker Stanley...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From 'the oldest House in Armagnac' comes a well-balanced sipper that's reminiscent of Bourbon with its deep amber color; its rich, sweet caramel note; and bold finish that tastes of maple-butter sprinkled with clove and cinnamon. (KN)" (12/2012) 93 points Vinous: "Dartigalongue’s XO is burly, with cologne-like aromas, and surprisingly complex for its youth (10-year-old brandies in the blend). Buttery, with flavors of dried plum, candied ginger and walnut, and a spicy finish of clove and cardamom. A Rye drinker’s Armagnac. B...

The much anticipated new release of Arran 10 Year. This fabulous Island Distillery was built in 1996 and their flagship 10 year has been around since 2006. Now, with the assistance of legendary design firm Stranger & Stranger, they've released this wonderful whisky with a completely new look and flavor. Arran is distilled in Lochranza at the first legal distillery situated here, despite the island's long history of illicit distillation. The owners have since built a second distillery across the island called Lagg, devoted to peated malt. The gorgeous new...

Calumet's new ten-year-old Kentucky bourbon expression is a mash bill of 74% Corn, 18% Rye, and 8% Malted Barley, bottled at 100 proof. From the producer: "Crafted in 50 barrel batches, this robust bourbon showcases the development of our traditional ‘high rye’ mash bill over time... This premium bourbon is offered as a testament to Bull Lea’s glory and all the accomplishments of Calumet Farm. Bull Lea sired 52 stakes winners and numerous champions. The mystical Isle Of Jura offers one of the most isolated regions in Scotland. The 150 square mile island has just a couple hundred residents but boasts a huge population of red deer. Built in 1810 by Archibald Campbell, it fell into disrepair until two of the islands old families rebuilt in the 1960s. The distillery was ultimately purchased by famed blenders Whyte & Mackay after a hostile takeover battle over Invergordon Distillers. Now the distillery produces a modest 2.5 million liters of pure alcohol per year, mostly destined for blends. Very few sin...

The famous Jack Daniels distillery was never a rye producing plant, but over the last several years a push toward innovation has created some oppurtunities to explore new horizons. This yearly limited release expression of rye is drawn from a single barrel and bottled at full barrel proof without the addition of water before bottling. Proofs will range from 125-140 proof depending on the botlting. It's made from a mashbill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley. After many years in those hot high Lynchburg summers, the intense flavors of the rye mash...

The El Tesoro brand remains on fire, especially the repo which is becoming increasingly had to get a hold of. Fortunately we locked in this K&L Exclusive barrel of repo last year before the impending price increases, so we've got a chance for folks to stock up on one of the most sought after additive free Tequilas from the Camarena family. This particular barrel was in ex-Bourbon and yielded 240 bottles. Like all of El Tesoro's single barrels, this stands a cut above the regular repo as each barrel in the program was individually selected out of the ware...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is very pale in the glass, but with a zesty, savory aroma that suggests fresh oregano and basil. The palate melds that herbaceousness with hints of almond and lemon cream, plus cinnamon and white pepper on the elongated finish. Sip or mix. (KN)" (05/2018) K&L Notes: Siete Leguas, named after the horse belonging to Pancho Villa, is a Highlands tequila from Atotonilco El Alto. The new limited edition 100% wooden tank fermented expression from the extremely well liked El Pandillo Distillery is sure to be a benchmark going forward. Interest in traditionally produced tequila, free from additives and celebrities alike, has never been higher. Unfortunately, the world's newly found obsession with great authentic tequila has meant most of the best stuff is highly allocated and limited. This excellent release is no different, but we've managed to secure a significant portion of the states 550 cases. We're not limiting the number of bo...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain. (DB, Fall 2015)" 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky ...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This elegant single malt from Nikka bears a dark, vibrant gold color, with smoke and caramel aromas. On the palate, look for well-balanced notes of citrus peel, cedar and oak, and a gentle waft of smoke. An astringent sensation on the finish sets the mouth watering, leading to a full-bodied, almost oily texture. Recommended for sipping neat. 94 points Whisky Advocate: "For Nikka From the Barrel, it’s been a long road to Whisky of the Year. This Japanese blend made its U.S. debut in 2018, but its inception dates back more than 30 years. In 1985, Nikka Whisky Distilling Company’s blending team, led by Shigeo Sato, designed this whisky using both malt and grain whiskies produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries. When taking into account the full array of casks—bourbon barrels, sherry butts, refill hogsheads, and more—over 100 different constituent whiskies are enlisted.

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "First nosing seems green and vegetal, with a background trace of sea salt; further time stirs additional scents, including wet sand, green olives, and linseed oil. Palate entry is lightly honeyed and caramel-like; by midpalate, the sherry influence is in full bloom as succulent flavors of dark caramel, black tea leaves, nougat, treacle, and marzipan thrill the palate. Finishes sweet, plucky, and heady. (PP)" (06/2006) 94 points Whisky Advocate: "The nose leans sweet with dulce de leche and dark berry jam, but it’s counter...

Whisky Advocate: "From the folks at Willett distillery, Noah’s Mill has less than 20 barrels in a batch and will include 15 year old barrels in the dump. The deep amber color prepares the nose for what promises to be an exciting ride. Aromas of ginger, plums, cinnamon, fresh-baked cornbread, and fresh-squeezed cherries. The warm palate packs caramel, nutmeg, and vanilla with lovely cinnamon on the finish. Sourced whiskey. The beauty of the Elijah Craig barrel program is that they do it exactly how we want. For years we'd taste samples of gorgeous old Elijah Craigs at cask strength, but we're never allowed to bottle at this strength. Then one day Heaven Hill figured out that doing what your customers want is a GREAT way to sell bourbon. Even better they build this incredible space in one of the old warehouses and hired an incredible team to help facilitate the tasting experience. That's where we met Sylvia. 93 points Whisky Advocate: "From rickhouse G, floor 5, barrel 136 is a study in caramel. Layered in crème brûlée, salted-caramel cupcake, caramel brownie, caramel apple fritters, caramel popcorn, and the classic caramel chew. Then, complexity: chocolate truffles, nutmeg-dusted hot bananas, ginger ice cream, cinnamon-candied almonds, and warm povitica. It's so creamy, so rich, and so unrelenting with masterful flavor that the powerfully long and caramel-forward finish is expected. Splendid, must-have sipper. 90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The bouquet features smells of new car leather, breakfast cereal, cornmeal, pepper and hemp. Entry is nicely sweet and intensely grainy; the mid-palate is the high point as the taste profile expands to include semisweet flavors of caramel corn, toasted marshmallow, dried fruit and chocolate covered cherry. Concludes oaky sweet and chewy. *Superb, Highly Rated*" (12/2008) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "One of the few remaining age-stated bourbons. Henry McKenna’s color is beautiful. K&L's first barrel from Arette and our second from the excellent NOM 1109 - El Llano distillery. The famous old brand from the Orendain family often gets forgotten with all the hype around additive free and high proof, but Arette Suave has been additive free, family owned and traditionally produced since its inception and the family has produced tequila on the site since at least 1900. There’s a strong drying feel to the sip, which sizzles with ginger and cinnamon right into the toasty vanilla and almond finish. Made with a blend of 8-11 year old whiskies. (KN)" (07/2019) K&L Notes: A celebratory bottling crafted to honor Nathan "Nearest" Green, the first African American master distiller and the man at least partially responsible for perfecting the Lincoln County process, the hallmark of Tennessee whiskey. Honey, jalapeño, rosemary, crème brûlée, malt, and fruit, from the spicy citrus of grapefruit to prunes and dried apricots. Hard to believe this is over 100 proof, as you never sense the strength challenging you to find what’s next amidst the subtlety. Extremely long finish with cherry, cinnamon, and caramel. Value Pick. The old famous distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee is one of the world's most popular brands, but understanding this distillery is impossible without visiting. Like any great distillery the real reason Jack Daniel's is so good is the water source. The mineral spring at the back of the property known as Cave Spring Hollow has never once run dry in the many years of production. The cave is at a constant 56 degrees giving visitors a welcome respite from the hot humid Tennessee sun. The high mineral, low iron water filtered through many meters of limestone is...

95 points Whisky Advocate: "Until now, most Knob Creek has been bottled at 9 years of age or younger for good reason: There’s no guarantee that bourbon will taste good after a dozen years in the barrel—let alone great. This one is richly complex from the start: York Peppermint Pattie, raisins, baking spice, dark chocolate-covered cherries, iced tea, and tobacco barn appear on the nose, followed by a chewy, full palate laden with cinnamon, allspice, and ginger, and perfectly balanced with sweet berry cobbler, chocolate ganache, and caramel. The finish goe...

Whisky Advocate: "One for no age statement naysayers. An eloquent expression of sweet osmanthus, baked lemon, yuzu, violin resin, rich malts, and bonfire aromas on a favorite woolen jumper. It glides across the tongue with sweet barley sugar, but attests to greater depths; grapefruit, spicy ginger, and mandarin developing milk chocolate-coated, candied lemon flavors. A firm finish: green cardamom spices slowly releasing their grip on the front of the palate, leaving clingy vanilla. Unbound by an age statement, it's a beautiful offering. (JM, Winter-2016)...

One of the absolute most unusual and exceptional examples of one of our favorite categories of apéritifs, Pineau des Charentes. I think these really work after dinner as well. Like the incredible Paul et Marie Pineau before them, the Navarre’s Pineau des Charentes take this whole category to the next level. They’re produced in a hyper-inefficient manner, which makes them absolutely wonderful. The Jacky Navarre Pineau Rosé is made with 6 year old Cognac and the grape must from the 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc harvest. Aged until Gnarly, meat...

(GS, Fall 2018)" K&L Notes: Still holding our super low price on this classic Islay whisky, which was named "World Whisky of the Year" by Jim Murray in his 2008 edition of the "Whisky Bible." The same luscious flavors show up on the palate, rich and sweet, leading into a confected finish of Nutella sprinkled with nutmeg and cinnamon. The sugar-and-spice effect is due to 18 months finishing time in casks that first held Cognac, then Caribbean rum. *Top 50 Spirits 2013* (KN)" (07/2013) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "The folks at Angel’s Envy once again push the envelope with this 95% rye whiskey finished in Caribbean rum casks. Whisky Advocate: "A world blend combining malt and grain whiskies from Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Canada, and the U.S., this is a busy, multilayered whisky. The nose has grilled orange, floral notes, fruity hard candy, rose water, fresh-baked bread, an almost yeasty note, wood spice, pastry, and firework smoke. This new brand, from an undisclosed distillery in Kentucky, is a true small batch; only 15 barrels are dumped at a time. While we don't have much information about how it was made, we can tell you that this micro-batch would easily qualify as Bottled-in-Bond if the distiller could be disclosed. And while the market for Kentucky bourbon is as tight as can be, this is proof that nearly anything is possible. Designed impeccably to bring bourbon into the modern era, Frank August isn't relying on tired tropes about some fictional recipe. In fact, Frank August...

Originally a mysterious oddity only known to the hardest of the hardcore Kentucky bourbon fanatics, Black Maple Hill rode the popularity explosion in craft whiskey to its demise - almost. As the boom peaked, along with BMH's prices, the supply of their confidential, age-stated whiskeys essentially dried up and Black Maple Hill exited the market, it seemed. Undaunted, the brand's owner sought far and wide for new supply, and he found his diamond in the rugged and rough high plains of northeastern Oregon - the Steins family farm and distillery. It's no secret that we're big fans of Kilchoman distillery here at K&L. Our visit to the distillery on Islay really opened our eyes to the incredible job they're doing. Kilchoman is a tiny operation, producing on one still and malting whatever they can inside their humble barn. Due to their small scale, the cost of production is higher and prices for their whisky have not been inexpensive. Kilchoman's hands-on style and attention to detail make a world of difference. Every release has been better than the last, albeit extremely limited in supply. All tha...

Lemorton Calvados comes from the southern appellation of Domfrontais. In this appellation at least 30% of the cider in the Calvados must be made from pears. This 6-year-old is elegant and beautiful, with more than 60% of the blend coming from pear. The apple, however, is what shines through and the Lemorton succeeds, more than any other Calvados we offer, in showcasing the bright acidity of the fruit along with soft touches of baking spice. Fantastic Calvados.
