Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer that we import (or even carry) from Champagne at just 7.5 acres. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to negociants; his production totals just one thousand cases a year. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and this hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and this wine comes from just two rows in the grand cru of Chouilly, in a plot called La Derriere du Mont Aigu. This is electr...

97 points Vinous: "It’s unique to taste an XO that’s aged 25 years, made from a significant amount of Folle Blanche grape in the blend, and bottled at cask strength -- or brut de fût as the French say. Complex yet seamless. Summer-garden aromas of orange and honeysuckle lead to a deep, intense experience on the palate, a thrilling balance of fruit and minerality, and a long, dry finish. Bas-Armagnac, 42.4% abv. (JW)" (07/2018) K&L Notes: Here's a 25-year-old Armagnac from a legendary house for less than $90. Oh, did we mention that it's also cask stren...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Even better than the 2009, the 2010 Château Barde-Haut offers the same sexy, extroverted style yet has slightly more density and depth. Blackcurrants, plums, graphite, and loads of chocolate notes jump from the glass, and it put its foot firmly on the ripeness pedal with its full-bodied richness and depth, sweet tannins, moderate acidity, and a rockstar of a finish. It's one of the most massive, opulent wines in the lineup and will continue to evolve gracefully for another two decades or more." (03/2020) 94 points The Wine Indep...

94 points James Suckling: "A wine with blueberry and mineral aromas follows through to a full body, with fine tannins and a juicy finish. Best for years from here." (02/2013) 94 points Wine Advocate: "The wine needs a good 7-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 30 more years, but this is the finest Cantemerle I have encountered in my professional career of tasting young vintages (dating back 34 years now). Stunningly deep ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of spring flowers intermixed with perfumed raspberry and blueberry notes, it exhibits a sort...

Domaine du Cardinat has been in the Lalanne family for over a century. Farmer and grandfather of the current proprietor, Patricia Singh, built the family home at the domaine 100 years ago and cultivated the land long before that. In 1935, Joseph Lalanne's sudden death thrust Patricia's father, Camille into the fields forcing him to leave school and commit his life to the family domaine. Just four years later, Camille planted the first vines at the domaine and his life was devoted to this patient passion. There he worked tirelessly to produce great brandy...

95 points James Suckling: "This is powerful and racy with lots of class. Full body, very sweet with lots of spicy botrytis character. Intense. Drink or hold. " (10/2012) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Classic Sauternes, treading the fine line between sweetness and elegance. Initially, it seems to be dominated by the botrytis, but then sweet fruits also show, with ripe yellow fruits, honey and almonds, touched with citrus. As it develops, the wine will become richer and more intense. (RV)" (06/2008) 92 points Wine Spectator: "There's beautiful ripe fruit...
This all stainless steel fermented chardonnay champagne comes exclusively from the grand cru of Cramant- the steepest of all the villages on the Côte des Blancs. The old vine estate parcels used for this have yielded a wine of both richness and refreshment. Dosed at just 2g/l after seven years on the lees, it is a blanc de blancs that has it all! -Gary Westby

91 points Wine Spectator: "Very ripe fruit on the nose, with hints of tobacco and cedar. Full-bodied, with big, chewy tannins, yet soft and luscious. (JS)" (03/2003) 90 points Wine Advocate: "The deep ruby/purple-colored 2000's rich, complex perfume displays aromas of cedar, black cherry liqueur, melted licorice, scorched earth, tobacco, and new oak. The wine is rich, firm, tannic, concentrated, and medium to full-bodied with admirable sweetness of fruit. It is a beautiful effort... This Champagne comes from a very special plot in Monthelon, just behind the Le Brun house on a southeast facing slope. It is entirely Meunier, half of which was planted in 1952 and the other half in 1902; the oldest living vines that I have seen in Champagne. The village of Monthelon is in the Côteaux de Sud Épernay, one of the coldest microclimates in Champagne, and that cold climate, in tandem with these ancient vines, has given us a truly epic wine. Alex’s craft has added to this — he uses a combination of small oak and large foudres for this wine alo...

92 points James Suckling: "The combination of ripeness, lightness and harmonious dryness makes this an attractive wine that's very food friendly. I love the smooth dryness of the finish." (07/2014) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A delicious wine, so fruity. It does have the proper tannins but it is a wine that is already approachable with its sweet fruits-a pleasure to taste. However, for the future, watch those tannins. (RV)" (02/2012) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This is tight and precise, with lots of cut from start to finish, as chiseled graphite and ...

92 points Decanter: "Billecart-Salmon's 2019-based Brut Réserve continues the impressive rebirth of this cuvée, showing more focus, length and sapidity than previous versions. The dosage has dropped to 3g/L (from 9g/L in 2016), but the delicious nut oil and brown bread reserve wine depth props up roasted lime and apricot fruit. One to watch. 40% Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. 93 points James Suckling: "This is lovely, the aromas and flavors run long into the finish with notes of light butter biscuits, subtle cooked apples and peaches. It's full yet balanced and long. Lovely texture. Lots of flavor and polished textured bubbles. The base in the current release is 2016 vintage. 50% chardonnay, 35% pinot noir and 15% pinot meunier. Disgorged in December 2022." (08/2023) 91 points Wine Advocate: "Based on the 2016 vintage and disgorged in December 2022, the latest release of Laurent Perrier's NV Brut La Cuvée is showing nicely,...

90-92 points Jasper Morris: "Assemblage across the village from borders with Chassagne to Meursault. Pale in colour and with a little oak present at the moment, out from under which emerge the floral notes which are so much a part of Puligny but which I largely missed between 2018-2020. Ripe grapes yet well handled, with a fine aftertaste. Drink from 2026-2029." A winery to watch. (JS)" (01/2001) 90 points Wine Advocate: "A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by pure, sweet aromas of blackberry and blueberry jam revealing nicely integrated oak. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The tannins are very fine, with rich fruitcake and smoky flavors. Red berry and black plums give a fruity character, along with delicious acidity. The wine is structured while still remaining very approachable. *Top 100 Wines of 2012* (RV)" (04/2012) 92 points James Suckling: "Big and massive wine for this appellation. Some may say too much but loads of fruit underneath. Full and chewy. This will be one of the most crowd pleasing spirits we've ever brought in from France: this 16 year single barrel exclusive of 70% pear and 30% apple distilled Calvados from the small producer Domaine Pacory. In the Domfrontais region of Normandy, the brandies are generally at least 60% pear. Located on the ferme des Grimaux, the Pacory property has been in the family since 1939, but it wasn't until 1959 that Claude Pacory decided to try to perfect the art of Calvados distillation. The torch was passed to Frédéric in 1986 and he's been carrying the tradi...

94 points Decanter: "The red premier cru Gravières is the flagship of this estate. It is widely seen as the finest vineyard in Santenay, and Jessiaume owns more than five hectares; the bulk of this is included here. This substantial wine is slightly reticent on the initial attack, but it opens with time to show deep mulberry and plum fruit aromas, hints of exotic black tea and spice. The texture is dense and firm, with silky but supportive tannins and impressive persistence on the palate. The grapes are destemmed and gently fermented before ageing for 12...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I loved the 2000 Château Barde-Haut. It offers a mature, complex bouquet of blackcurrants, toasted spice, tobacco, and leather to go with a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced style on the palate. While fully mature and drinking at point, it should easily evolve for another 7-8 years. It's a beautiful wine." (03/2020) 92 points Wine Advocate: "A great sleeper of the vintage, this fully mature wine, made by Helene Garcin, has loads of deep raspberry and black cherry fruit with hints of licorice, toasty oak, and spice box....

93 points Decanter: "Richly biscuity on the nose, with steamed rice, fresh pear and citrus blossom complexity. Creamy mousse dissolves into red apple peel, lemon and stone fruits, with a depth of honeyed biscuits. The Reserve NV from Pol Roger is a blend of base wines from at least three vintages. With 6 months of post-disgorgement ageing, the wine is ready to enjoy now. (SW)" (10/2021) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is the nonvintage cuvée from this producer. 91 points Wine Advocate: "A blend 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot raised in 50% new oak and 50% one-year old barrels. The Capbern-Gasqueton 2009 has a very precise bouquet with ample red fruits: wild strawberry and raspberry with subtle earth and liquorice notes underneath and beginning to rise to the surface with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with good fruit concentration, slightly chalky tannins at this stage, good tension and mineralite coming through towards the finish with blacker fruits, one again with a hint of liquori...

Jane Anson of Decanter rates the 1990 vintage in Bordeaux a 5 out of 5 stating: "This was the third successful Bordeaux vintage in a row, and so maybe the locals were a little more blasé about it than they would have been if they had known what was to follow for the next four years."

96 points Vinous: "I was deeply impressed with these wines from Domaine de Chevalier. The red has a slight upper hand in 2014, but both wines are distinctive and full of character. Olivier Bernard owns one of the crown jewels of Bordeaux, as these wines clearly make evident. The 2014 Domaine de Chevalier is a total knockout. Precise, brilliant and finely sculpted, the 2014 possesses superb intensity. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red berries, along with finessed but persistent tannins, give the wine its regal personality. The 2014 needs a number of...

90-92 points Jasper Morris: "From Les Pelles and Pellands, one third and two thirds respectively. Slightly paler in colour yet with good intensity of fruit. A little ripe citrus, a touch of sulphur once again, though like the Pertuisots there is considerable solar generosity, before the more citrus finish. The potential is shown by the length of flavour. Drink from 2026-2029." (12/2023) K&L Notes: Philippe Pernot, grandson of Paul Pernot, comes from a family that is renowned for classic Puligny and Bâtard wines. He has been carrying on the tradition by...

95 points Wine Spectator: "This captures terrific ripeness, intensity and density with stunning mouthfeel, as layer upon layer of fig sauce, braised plum, cassis, cherry eau de vie and pastis glide along together, with notes of spice, ganache and graphite hanging in reserve. The very long finish has cut and precision, despite its weight. Should age effortlessly. (JM)" (06/2012) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of 65% Grenache and the rest Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Clairette, the 2009 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a beauty a...

96 points Wine Advocate: "This sensational wine spent three years in a combination of demi-muids and small oak. It boasts an inky/purple color along with a sweet nose of underbrush, garrigue, licorice, blackberries and black currants. Full, thick, unctuously textured and even flamboyant, this stunning 2007 should drink well for another 15-20 years. (RP)" (10/2010) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "More concentrated, dense, and serious, the 2007 Xavier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Anonyme is thrilling on all accounts. 95 points Wine Advocate: "The top wine from the portfolio, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme offers thrilling purity and focus in its lively dark fruits, roasted meats and underbrush-scented bouquet. Full-bodied, ripe and textured, with fantastic polish and sweetness to its tannin, it has a supple, forward feel, yet will easily evolve for 10-15 years. This is another impressive lineup from oenolgist Xavier Vignon, who works with the likes of Raymond Usseglio, Le Nerthe, Marcoux and Grand Veneur, to name a few. These are all negociant wines, but...

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a generous, full-bodied wine. Touches of vanilla indicate the wood aging but that will go as the elegant structure and black fruits come to the fore. The wine’s future is assured, promising impressive drinking from 2027. (RV)" (03/2021) 94 points Wine Spectator: "This drapes wonderfully, with its range of warmed cassis, plum reduction and blackberry preserve flavors displaying a cashmere feel while warmed anise, alder, juniper and bay details peek in throughout. 90 points Wine Spectator: "This is big and tannic, with loads of concentration. Full-bodied, chewy and impressive. Leave it for a long time. Super price for a cru classé. (JS)" (03/2003) Jancis Robinson: "Really very good indeed. Deep crimson. Meaty and savoury with just a hint of that velvety texture that so many 1990s exhibit. Quite a high tannin content but these are ripe, well-masked tannins. 17.5/20 points (JR) " (10/2003) Wine Advocate: "A sleeper of the vintage, with a characteristic not dissimilar from a good St.-Julien, the medium-bodied 200...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another 2005 that's drinking at point yet has plenty of life ahead of it, the 2005 Château Barde-Haut reveals a dense plum/purple hue as well as a mineral-laced bouquet of red and black fruits, dried flowers, truffly earth, and graphite. With medium to full-bodied richness, it has terrific mid-palate depth, a focused, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I'd certainly be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar, and it will evolve gracefully for another 10-15 years, although there's no need to delay gratification at ...

95-97 points Vinous: "The 2021 Beau-Séjour-Bécot is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted here. Pliant and deep, with striking depth, the 2021 is outrageously beautiful. All the elements come together so effortlessly. Dark fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and incense all build in the glass. The creamy tannins are impossibly refined for the year, while the finish is eternal. The 2021 is a real stunner. Readers won't want to miss it! 95 points Decanter: "At five years old, the tannins are still young and holding on tight, but the blackberry and cassis fruits have both juice and depth. This is a vintage where the phenolics are high, and there is an inky depth overall. Mint and cedar smoke on the finish, with clear energy underpinning the palate. This was the first certified organic vintage. Last tasted in 2018, just after bottling, and it is still a few years away from being ready to drink, but showing excellent development. Took the audience award in the masterclass, along with the 2...

In fact, the wine has a gracefulness that is really delightful. Long finish with fantastic textural complexity. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold." 90 points Burghound: "Here the cooler and more reticent nose is at once more elegant and a more layered while grudgingly displays its nose of the essence of red cherry, raspberry and soft spice wisps. I very much like the texture of the stony and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that are like rolling a small pebble around the mouth on the clean, dry, balanced and youthfully austere finale. Understated and lovely." (04/2024) K&L Notes: Château de la Maltroye is a Burgundian wine estate in Chassagne-Montrachet, boasting a superb 18th century château s...

Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, well-balanced with great tension. Not a powerful Volnay, yet light on its feet with a touch of spice on the finish. Fine. The vines produced a fairly deeply-coloured wine in 2021, with a perfumed plum and violet fruit character, fresh acidity, supple tannins, and light body. This wine will not make old bones, but it is very pleasant for current drinking. Three casks were produced, all ageing now in older oak barrels.
