95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vinified primarily in concrete with a small proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, there's a lifted, airy freshness to Gigognan's Clos du Roi that's consistent from vintage to vintage. A full-bodied blend of Grenache (70%), Mourvédre (20%) and Syrah (10%), it's packed with layers of succulent blackberry, cherry and plum flavors, edged by a stony, salty minerality. *Editors' Choice* (AI)" (11/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "A meaty wine, with converging flavors of earth, tar, violet and fruit, plus cranberry and cassis note...

This 2010 Gran Reserva from our favorite Rioja winery is back in stock! As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines...

Elisabeth Goutorbe and her husband Jean-Marie Egrot run their tiny production Champagne house almost entirely by themselves. They get very little help from their cat Maurice, but can rely on Elisabeth’s father, René Goutorbe of Champagne Henri Goutorbe for a little bit of help. Of the 15 acres they own in Ay, Louvois, Tauxieres and Mutigny, they only keep the fruit from their 2.5 best—mostly in Ay, but also a touch of Louvois Chardonnay for balance. Their home straddles the border of Ay and Mutigny, two great terroirs in the Gand Valley of the Marne, whi...

At just 7.5 acres, Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer from Champagne that we import, or even carry. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to négociants. His production is just 1,000 cases a year, total. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and his hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and, although small, it is diverse. He farms 22 plots in eight different villages. Among these are some of the oldest vines in Cham...

This Champagne used to be called Elisabeth Goutorbe Cuvée Éclatante. Elisabeth changed the name over to her married name Egrot when she and her husband moved out of her parents' facility in Aÿ, and into their own. It is a 100% estate-grown, direct-import gem. It is a blend of two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay, mostly from the grand crus of Ay and Louvois and including some from the premier crus of Tauxieres and Mutigny. Dosage is a little under 8 grams per liter. This wine has the silky texture and tiny streamers that only patience brings. ...

The Launois "Oeil de Perdrix" Brut Champagne is a blanc de noir of Pinot Noir comes from the Chantmerle vineyard in the village of Sézanne proper and is fermented entirely in enamel lined steel tanks. The name means “partridges’ eye” and refers to the very short maceration the juice gets with the skins, giving it a blush that is more golden than pink. The bouquet reminds me of a great panettone; not only does it have buttery bread aromas, but also dried red fruits and roasted nuts. In the mouth it is round and trop facile à boire, too easy to drink but t...
93 points Decanter: "More expressive and complex than many 2020 Châteauneufs at this early stage, with Provençal herbs and bay leaf aromas to the blackberry fruit - very promising. Light- to medium-bodied, fluid and juicy, with fresh acidity, this is well-defined and should build some complexity in time. Finishes on a savoury note. (MW)" (09/2021) 93 points James Suckling: "A seductive nose of dark cherries, plums, dark chocolate, dried herbs and sweet spices, follow through to a medium to full body with chewy tannins. Structured with a creamy core of ...

This wonderful vintage Champagne is composed exclusively from old-vine selection massal Pinot Meunier. The two plots it comes from are Les Chaillots, planted in 1970, and Les Jenne Craux, planted in in 1969. The dosage is kept low, at six grams per liter, and it has both power and also refreshment.

One of K&L's very finest buys from France, this is a reserve cuvée, made from Millet's chalkiest limestone soils. There is a long maceration at very low temperatures to extract as much flavor and character as possible. The resulting wine is intensely charged with stone fruit and minerality, and bright citrus notes. The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present the wines. We love these wines for their fresh...

For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity. This is a superb Cabernet-very elegant and user friendly already. Lots of sweet cassis and red fruit aromas that follow to the palate. No hard edges here-drink it young with a prime rib or steak dinner. Will cellar well for five plus years. clyde
This all estate grown rosé is based on old-vine Chardonnay from Chouilly and Cramant. It gets its rosé color and flavor from an ancient plot of Meunier grown just between the villages of Chavot and Monthelon south of Epernay. It is a refreshing, elegant style of rosé, great for the aperitif or to pair with a smoked salmon appetizer. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
This all estate-grown Champagne is pure Pinot Meunier from vineyards in Troissy. It is on the richer side of brut, and full of exotic spice, fruit, and even some toasty, chanterelle-like notes. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
Price: $26.99
This Champagne comes from one plot of 70-year-old Chardonnay vines in the Montagne of Reims village of Trepail. It is aged for three years on the lees. The Champagne has a chalky, creamy, bread bakery-esque nose, and a concentrated impression on the palate. As one would expect from such ancient vines, it delivers the goods on the finish with plenty of chalk as well as a bit of honey and white fruit. This makes a perfect aperitif, but will also pair well with seafood such as seared scallops or even raw oysters. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Made from 80% Pinot and 20% Chardonnay, with the base 2019 and the rest reserve wine from the past couple of years, the NV Champagne Grand Cru Bouzy Les Parcelles is expressive and fruit-forward on opening, with notes of cherry blossom, fresh peach, and honeycomb. With zero grams per liter dosage, there’s no lacking for ripeness and freshness. Long on the palate and quite inviting, it’s going to be wonderful drinking over the coming 8-10 years. (AF)" (11/2023) 91 points Decanter: "From the 2019 vintage-based edition, Pailllard’s...

This Champagne is composed of two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay. The Champagne has a graceful, delicate balance that Verzenay wines sometimes lack but with the signature hazelnut Pinot core. I found it to have creaminess to complement its racy cherry fruit on the palate and an extraordinarily long, dry finish. It is dosed at 9 grams per liter: very dry! It will age very well. The Arnoulds own 27 acres in the village of Verzenay, a quite sizable holding in this high-rent area. It is planted to 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, which is avera...

In the part of Champagne known most for Pinot Noir, there is a magical place called La Perle Blanche de la Montagne de Reims, the east-facing slope of this small but prominent hill. The first village of this sub-region is the Premier Cru of Trépail, where the Petiau family tends to a small but exceptional vineyard. In the past, this family ran the nursery for the surrounding area, and like many of the best producers in Champagne, they have continued to nurture their own massal selection of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, choosing not to use the earlier ripeni...

Wine Enthusiast: "Dominated by Pinot Noir, this rich Champagne, mainly from the 2014 harvest, is full of mature fruitiness that is discovering toasty flavors. (RV)" (12/2021) K&L Notes: This all-estate Champagne is composed of 70% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay, and 15% Meunier and aged for six years on the lees. It has very fine, brioche-like aromas from the long sur-lie aging, as well as savory and cherry notes from the high-quality Pinot. It is very rich and long in the mouth, with a fine bead, again from long aging.

90 points Wine Spectator: "Dark in color, with lots of blackberry, mineral, licorice and a hint of toasty oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and generous, with lots of fruit underneath. (JS)" (03/2008) Decanter: "Lifted cassis and hedgerow fruits. Harmonious balance between ripe, dark fruit, integrated oak, and chewy tannins. Attractive. " (06/2008) Wine Advocate: "A consistently well-made cru bourgeois, this wine exhibits a deep ruby color and a nice, earthy nose with hints of burning embers intermixed with...

96 points Sam Kim: "This is seductively complex and enticing on the nose, showing dark berry, bouquet garni, roasted nut and dried mushroom aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that's both refined and robust. It's expansive and finely textured with beautifully pitched tannins, making it splendidly structured and lingering. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2035." 95 points Vinous: "The 2021 Hair of the Bear is an unusual blend of 75% Petite Syrah and 25% Roussanne. It’s a combination that works so well. Inky dark fruit, licorice, cloves, chocolate and sweet spice all meld together effortlessly, while perfumed floral notes lift the finish. (AG)" (07/2023) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2021 Hair of the Bear is based largely on Petite Sirah but includes a whopping 25% Roussanne, all from the estate Stolpman Vineyard on Ballard Canyon. It follows the house style and is focused and vibrant, with medium to full-bodied ...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lots of chocolate, mocha, darker fruits, and dried herb-like notes emerge from the 2012 Château Barde-Haut, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated 2012. It's showing a touch of maturity yet still has plenty of tannins and structure, good mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. I continue to think 2012 was a great vintage for the Right Bank, and this certainly doesn't change my mind." (03/2020) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Offers lovely purity and mouthfeel, with notes of velvety plum, boysenberry and cherry preserves gliding easi...
Gilbert Jacquesson's top offering comes from estate vineyards planted in the village of Troissy, in the heart of the Marne Valley. It is composed of 40% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and 30% Pinot Noir. The Meunier is all reserve wines from old plots that is barrel fermented and barrel aged for one year. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A ripe, mature wine, with spice and acidity at the service of the vanilla and white-fruit flavors. A fine, balanced wine, this blend of all three main Champagne grapes is ready to drink. *Editors' Choice* (RV) " (09/2023) K&L Notes: This great bottle of vintage champagne shows off the advantages of the fresher style of 2014 with a fantastic combination of Puligny like lime and sourdough toast on the nose, and a very light, but surprisingly persistent impression on the palate. It is entirely estate grown from vineyards in Cha...
This balanced, elegant Champagne is composed of 30% Chardonnay, 60% Pinot Noir and 10% Meunier. The grapes are all from the Gonet family's estate, spread from the southernmost 1er cru of Vertus to the valley of the Marne. It is a gorgeous wine to toast with: bready, vibrant and flavorful. - Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer

This great bottle comes from the far northern edge of Champagne in the Massif St-Thierry, north of Reims. All of the vines for this 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Meunier cuvée come from Cormincy, the last village in Champagne before the flats facing out towards the Ardennes. As one would expect from a Blanc de Noir, this is a full-bodied wine with plenty of savory red fruit flavor. Due to its far northern provenance, this Champagne also has great snap and refreshment to balance out its power. - Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer

95 points Tim Atkin: "Very much a reflection of its cool, almost marginal terroir, this is one of the best Viñedo Singular reds. Made from Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 4% Viura, it's a subtle, chiselled, graceful red with racy acidity, stony minerality, floral top notes and a core of red cherry and pomegranate fruit. 2023-35" (02/2022) 94 points Wine Advocate: "The wine labeled in 2016 as Gran Vino and in 2017 as Viñedo Singular has finally been simplified to 2018 Finca la Emperatriz Tinto with the category of Viñedo Singular, the new official sin...

Although not labeled as such, this is a Blanc de Noir composed of 60% Meunier and 40% Pinot Noir. It is aged for over four years on the lees and dosed at about ten grams per liter. It has a lovely combination of spiced pear, pie crust, and black cherry on the very generous, open nose. The wine is broad, rich, and textural in the mouth, and has a persistent black fruit finish.

Alexandre Le Brun is a young winemaker from Monthelon in the Ardenne (Marne) region of Champagne. He is a ninth generation winemaker whose family established themselves in Champagne in 1750 and built their cellars in 1822. This bottling is simply great! It is a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that spent an incredible eight years on the lees! It is full, rich and creamy with a lush character. The Chardonnay comes through on the finish with bright green apple fruit and a touch of minerality.

If you have enjoyed the wines of Lallement, Bollinger, and Krug in the past, I think you will very much enjoy Michel Arnould. They are bold, masculine Champagnes with plenty of toasty flavor. This is a blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, entirely from estate vineyards in the Grand Cru of Verzenay. This is a great party Champagne, since it is full of flavor yet refreshing and moreish. The hazelnut Pinot character, so unique to the village of Verzenay, is pronounced in this wine, and many good tasters have mistaken it for barrel fermentation (it is...

Boutique winery Vinoce continues to impress. Little surprise when you consider their wines are made by much-heralded winemaker Keith Emerson of Vineyard 29! Emerson crafts some of the most highly sought-after cult Cabs in the valley from St. Helena fruit at Vineyard 29, including wines rated at 100-points by Robert Parker himself. Considering that pedigree, Vinoce's St. Helena Cab is very well priced at the regular $60 SRP, but at our Insider's Advantage price of over 50% off, it's just plain ridiculous.

The Gilbert Jacquesson rosé is entirely estate grown in the village of Troissy, in the heart of the Marne Valley. It is 100% Meunier and it gets its color from specially selected plots of Meunier that are vinified red. This is exotic, flavorful, rich Champagne that will go very well with fruit based desserts or even a salmon main course. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

95 points James Suckling: "Lots of rose petals on the nose, together with orange peel and cherries. Medium-bodied with very long and bright fruit character. Goes on for minutes, with so much energy and brightness. Drink or hold." (08/2022) 94 points Wine Advocate: "Following a challenging harvest for Sangiovese, the Fattoria le Pupille 2020 Poggio Valente generates aromas of wild cherry, pressed violet, balsam herb and grilled rosemary. There is a lot of good freshness (this was the difficulty of the vintage), and the wine has good tannic support for a...

92-93 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that shows lots of chocolate, tobacco and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. All there." (04/2011) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The Haut-Bergey 2010 has a very concentrated bouquet with dense blackberry, briary, crushed stone and tobacco on the nose that unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. There is a lot of extraction here, but it is in tune with the acidity and the structured finish has plenty of vibrant red fruit and energy to see it thr...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This gold-hued non vintage Brut is a classic example of the stellar quality of English fizz. Initial gun smoke notes morph into more opulent aromas like honeyed apple, citrus peel and toasted hazelnut. The rapier acidity is cheek sucking and tongue-tingling but lends freshness to the creamy textural weight and adds to the long, tangy finish. All elegance and class, this is highly food friendly but also totally delicious on its own. (CP) " (05/2023) 92 points Vinous: "The NV Brut from Wiston has been a go-to English spa...

Of the 15 acres they own in Aÿ, Louvois, Tauxieres and Mutigny, they only keep the fruit from their 2.5 best—mostly in Aÿ, but also a touch of Louvois Chardonnay for balance. This Champagne is made entirely from selected grand cru estate fruit from the village of Mesnil. It is fermented and aged in 600-liter new-oak casks before being bottled and aged four years on the lees. It has a super rich nose of vanilla, sourdough toast, and Mesnil minerals. In the mouth it's very racy and dry, not nearly as broad as the rich nose suggests. I think this is one of the ultimate lobster Champagnes in our stock, and will repay five years of cellaring with a gorgeous drink. If you love Selosse's Origine and Tarlant's Cuvée Louis, this is on...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Made from a blend of vintages from 2007 to 2015, this Champagne shows maturity as well as rich red apple and lemon-zest flavors. With its strong mineral edge, the wine is textured and now ready to drink. (RV)" (06/2020) K&L Notes: The Louis Victor from Coutelas is made in the solera style, from one large barrel containing a perpetual blend. This 100% estate grown Champagne comes from Damien Hugot's vineyards in Sud-Épernay, rather than his vineyards in Cramant and Chouilly. Sud-Épernay is among the coolest growing sub-regions in the appellation. The wine is composed of 50% Chardonnay from Monthelon, vinified in large oak foudre, and 50% a field blend of Pinot Noir and Meunier from Chavot, vinified in stainless steel that is aged in a solera-style perpetual blend. Burghound: "An ultra-fresh and nicely ripe nose freely offers up its pretty aromas of mostly red pinot fruit and soft earth scents. The racy, delicious and attractively textured middleweight flavors conclude in a dusty and lightly austere finale. While this could be approached young, 2 to 5 years of keeping should round off the finish and develop more depth." (01/2024) Jasper Morris: "Plots on the sand for the most part. A bright purple. Lean, austere, fresh. Red berries with even a chocolate note behind. Drier finish but enough fruit. Ready to bottle....
The vintage wine from Launois comes from older vines in the mid-slope portions of their estate in Mesnil and Cramant grand cru. Only massal selected chardonnay vines are used in this blend. La Peligrosa Garnacha is a vibrant and bold red wine crafted from old-vine Grenache grapes in Spain's Sierra de Gredos region. Known for its intense flavors of ripe red berries, spices, and a hint of earthy minerality, this wine offers a rich and velvety texture. La Peligrosa Garnacha exemplifies the unique terroir of the region, providing a captivating and robust drinking experience.
95 points Decanter: "Finca La Emperatriz is situated close to the borders of the Rioja appellation, in one of the coolest areas in the whole region. So much so that a little bit more to the west, vine cultivation is not feasible. It is also at relatively high altitude – almost 600m – which is particularly beneficial for white grape varieties. Grapes for this wine are Viura from poor soils, which were cool-macerated before crushing. Partly fermented and aged in barrels, partly in concrete vats, with lees contact, for 10 months before bottle ageing. Pedro ...

This rosé bottling is 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Verzenay, the northernmost of all the Grand Crus, in this northernmost of French wine regions. The whole village faces north, the wrong way, away from the sun, and yet miraculously ripens Pinot Noir, the most difficult Champagne variety to ripen perfectly. Some say it's because of a meteor that in prehistoric times hit the area that is now the village, creating the faux de Verzenay, a forest where the trees bend and fold in on themselves like a dark wood in The Lord of the Rings. This 100% Meunier from Croutes-sur-Marne is done in the fresh, clean style of Blanc de Noirs. It is an ideal aperitif! The warm bread and tarte-tatin aromas and flavors give this some power for people who like a toastier style, but without going over the edge into heaviness. Again, the bead and texture are spot on, I expect partially due to the cold, dead consistent temperature in their hillside cave. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)
