Just when you think you've tasted every type of booze known to man, you discover that there are more regionally specific spirits being distilled in places you've never considered. Take Bolivia, where they make a pisco-like spirit called Singani, distilled from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown high in the Andes mountains. Muscat is an aromatic varietal, known for its fruity and floral character, and the Singani spirit takes on many of the perfumes found in the expressive grape. The result is a clean and vibrant brandy that drinks like something in betwee...

This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect pick for anyone starting to explore the world of quality mezcal or as a relatively inexpensive option for mezcal-based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense, as one would expect with a well-made mezcal. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word. Gold medal winner in Tequila Aficionado's 2021 Brands of Promise.

Wine Enthusiast: "Aged six months in large wooden barrels, this sweet vermouth is zesty and mildly spicy on the nose and palate. Flavors layer molasses and maple with dried sage and savory spices, plus a hint of orange peel in the back. (KN)" (11/2016) K&L Notes: This fabulous collaboration between Antica Distilleria Quaglia, Chef Frederico Ricatto, and the Jerry Thomas Project in Rome is looking to reinvent the omnipresent vermouth. Not the traditional sweet vermouth, it offers unprecendented complexity and depth not found in other red vermouths. With...

The world's first farm-to-table Irish Cream. The cream is collected from family-owned farms in County Cork and blended and bottled within 48 hours of collection. While most Irish creams are about 1% whisky, Five Farms is 10% whisky and uses 10-year-old high-quality whisky for a more intense flavor. And unlike most other cream liqueurs, Five Farms doesn't add any sugar--the sweetness comes naturally from the cream. Awarded 97 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, this is certainly the world's finest Irish Cream and perfect for the holidays. It also co...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "There’s a lot going on in this gin, made with a mix of 29 botanicals, including California grapefruit, California bay leaf and a duo of mushrooms. Yet somehow, it all comes together: the opening salvo is spicy and bold with anise, pepper, and clove, before moving to a waxy lemon peel and juniper midpalate and finishing dry and dusty with suggestions of cocoa powder, coriander, and spicy grains of paradise. (KN)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: AMASS Gin is an expression of a particular place, in this case, Los Angeles. 11 of the gins 2...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Deep purple-brown in the glass, the aroma mixes jammy cherry and raspberry with eucalyptus. The palate walks the line between lightly sweet and lightly bitter, mingling herbaceous root beer notes with faint but refreshing mint and a mildly bitter edge. Recommended as a digestif or for cocktail mixing (i.e. Negroni-style drinks). (KN)" (04/2016) K&L Notes: *94 points, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Top 100 of 2020* This traditional Amaro from the far-flung Basilicata region is made in the most traditional manner. 91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (JW) " (09/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Cognac offers a golden hue and mild honey and white flower aromas. The subtle palate opens with a mild smoky note, then gives over to honey, sandalwood, and a nutmeg and ginger exhale. Made with eau-de-vie a minimum of 10 years old. *Best Buy!*...

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Made by Bruichladdich Distillery, which is renowned for its Scotch, on a pot still named Ugly Betty. Sold in an attractive, square-shouldered, gift-worthy bottle. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: What happens when you take one of the greatest single malt distillers of all time, put him in a room with an old...

There is no one on earth who could put together as compelling a pre-made Negroni as Jacopo Poli. You already know and love his incredible Marconi 42 Gin, Rosso Vermouth, and Bitter Super Taurus. Wham - the perfect Negroni. Just pour this bad boy over ice and if you've got a twist of orange, drop it in - although it's not strictly necessary. It is hands down the best pre-made Negroni we have ever tasted.

Gin Mare is a product we discovered in Scotland, of all places, years ago while searching for single malt. The retailer across the street from our hotel in Edinburgh was featuring the gin in a tasting that evening and we went over to check it out. Distilled in Spain with olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme, it's a savory and truly Mediterranean experience. The herbs never overpower the palate, however, as the balance between them is quite delicate and refined. It's definitely an ideal choice for martinis, paired with olives, of course.

2012 Cameronbridge 12 Year Old "Signatory" K&L Exclusive #268269 First Fill Bourbon Cask Strength Non Chillfiltered Lowland Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Top Pick!
This may be the youngest single grain we've ever bottled, but we did so with good reason. The facility is notable for being the very first in Scotland to install a column still and begin producing single grain whisky for blending way back in the 1840s. It sits just across the Fife of Forth from Ediburgh and remains one of the most important production facilities in the Diageo portfolio. In particular, it's notable that in the 1980s a GNS plant was erected for the production of neutral spirit to be used in such famous brands as Tanqueray, Pimm's and Smirn...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "Smells of ripe grapes, grape must and lead pencil in the initial whiffs; air contact stimulates baking spices, black currants, jasmine, pepper and paraffin. Entry is crisp, tart and intensely ripe; midpalate highlights black grape to maximum concentration. Finishes bittersweet to sweet. *Best Buy* (PP)" (11/2008) K&L Notes: The Jacopo Poli Sarpa is a perfect grappa for those who like a dry, not overly aromatic style that is very rich and complex. One of Italy's very top producers by any measure.

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The bouquet is lovely, balanced, properly astringent, ripe and juicy with scents of cherry stone and cherry juice. The palate entry is decadently sweet and textured with vibrant tastes of cherry compote and cherry preserves at midpalate. The finish is svelte, moderately syrupy and downright delicious. An outstanding liqueur: use it in an Aviation Cocktail." (12/2007) K&L Notes: This classic ingredient is a must-have for every serious cocktail bar. Each complex sip opens slightly sweet and finishes with citrus zing, mouthwatering salinity and a mineral hint of graphite. 92 points Whisky Advocate: "This expression was distilled from malt peated to 12 to 14 ppm, and aged for 9 years in 80% bourbon and 20% sherry casks before a final year in more sherry casks. Sweet smoke on the early nose, with malt, vanilla, quite dry sherry, apple, and toffee. Smoky barley, vanilla, subtle sherry, and light honey on the palate. Peaches, ginger, and woodsmoke on the medium-length finish. Rey Campero Espadin uses wild agave Espadin that is fermented in open air with wild yeasts. In true Rey Campero fashion, only the highest quality agave are used in production and the difference between wild agave Espadin instead of the more commonly used farmed Espadin makes a world of difference in this Mezcal. The Rey Campero Espadin is also aged before bottling, which adds complexity and depth. Considering the quality the pricing is absolutely astounding from this legendary distillery in Candelaria Yegole.

Whisky Advocate: "Hugely floral and perfumed on the nose, with rose petals, violet candies, and dried orange peel. This is the Gewürztraminer of American single malts—sweet lychee, laced with sachet aromas that explode as if opening Grandma’s dresser drawer. The palate is more tropical; dried pineapple, canned peach syrup, and spice. This could be polarizing, but it’s utterly captivating and worth a try. (JL, Fall 2017)" K&L Notes: St. George's new single malt release is described by Master Distiller Lance Winters as a California take on Japanese Malt. ...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "This expression offers an uncompromising note of brine-laden peat and iodine, with charcoal and sweeter fruit notes also present. The palate is equally out there, with old-fashioned fabric Band-Aids, bladderwrack seaweed, black pepper, smoldering peat, vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak. The finish is as big as everything else, with barbecue, iodine, and asphalt. Still a classic! 92 points Whisky Advocate: "New Riff is still too, well, new to have established “classic” flavors, but this bourbon certainly shows consistency with the distillery’s bottled in bond version—amped up here at barrel proof. Almonds and berries lead the nose, but it boasts voluminous depth with notes of peanuts, iced tea, orange blossom, tobacco leaf, and baking spice. Whisky Advocate: "A whiff of mealy, floury apples, pear, candied lemon peel, and fruit teas, this is certainly light and fruity, genteel even, yet a little timid overall. Soothing and creamy to drink, there's poached pears in condensed milk, white grape, a slow-paced crescendo of spice, and a dash of tangy citrus peel, followed by canned pears and a whir of spices on the finish. Carefree whisky for happy-go-lucky drinkers. (JM, Winter-2021)" K&L Notes: Few things in the whiskey world are as exciting as a new addition to the Compass Box core lineup. Know...

Since selling the brand in 2010, he’s been vodka-free until this year. St. George’s new vodkas are less flamboyant and more workman-like, but no less artful. Isle of Harris Sugar Kelp Infused Gin (750ml)

The plan to build a new distillery in this remote place wasn't an obvious one, but founder Anderson "Burr" Bakewell believed the unique feel of this special island could be captured, quite literally, in a bottle.
