This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect pick for anyone starting to explore the world of quality mezcal or as a relatively inexpensive option for mezcal-based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense, as one would expect with a well-made mezcal. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word. Gold medal winner in Tequila Aficionado's 2021 Brands of Promise.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Coconut and vanilla aromas mix with a hint of fresh pear. The palate shows tire rubber and peat smoke, with a hint of black licorice and a flare of clove heat. Adding water brings more licorice and a flurry of black pepper to the fiery finish. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2021) Whisky Advocate: "The only survivor from Old Pulteney’s core range shake-up of 2018, this has been matured in first and second-fill bourbon casks. The nose is delicate, with almonds, honey, and floral notes. Malt and toffee on the palate, with spicy oak and a...

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Made by Bruichladdich Distillery, which is renowned for its Scotch, on a pot still named Ugly Betty. Sold in an attractive, square-shouldered, gift-worthy bottle. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: What happens when you take one of the greatest single malt distillers of all time, put him in a room with an old...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Warm with orange and spice notes, this gin is earthy and woodsy, finishing with a hint of bitter orange peel. Mix this mouthwatering gin made in Australia's Yarra Valley into Negronis and other bold-flavored cocktails. (KN)" (08/2017) K&L Notes: The pride of Australia is now available here at K&L! The pride of Australia is now available here at K&L! After sweeping Double Gold at the San Francisco Spirits competition and wowing serious fans of gin around the world, Four Pillars is bringing its incredible gins from Down Under to the U.S. Utilizing "four pillars" of success (quality German copper stills, pure Yarra Valley water, unique Australian botanicals, and love, of course), the team of Aussies has created what we think are the best portfolio of high-quality, serious gins we've ever tasted. At a whopping 58.8%, the Navy Strength gin is a bold an...

91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (JW) " (09/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Cognac offers a golden hue and mild honey and white flower aromas. The subtle palate opens with a mild smoky note, then gives over to honey, sandalwood, and a nutmeg and ginger exhale. Made with eau-de-vie a minimum of 10 years old. *Best Buy!*...

Astrid Hubert has taken over her family's apple distillation business with a desire to bring Calvados into the modern generation. She wants to make her estate's brandy more fruit-forward and more feminine in style -- "After all, I am a woman!" she told us during our visit in 2013. There has never been an apple brandy this good on the American market at such an affordable price. The juicy apple flavor simply bursts on the first sip, the fruit taking front and center stage as the cider-like acidity helps balance out the richness of the wood. Try making a J...

Just when you think you've tasted every type of booze known to man, you discover that there are more regionally specific spirits being distilled in places you've never considered. Take Bolivia, where they make a pisco-like spirit called Singani, distilled from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown high in the Andes mountains. Muscat is an aromatic varietal, known for its fruity and floral character, and the Singani spirit takes on many of the perfumes found in the expressive grape. The result is a clean and vibrant brandy that drinks like something in betwee...

Whisky Advocate: "Fresh and delicate on the nose, with stone fruit—especially peaches—white pepper, orange Creamsicle, and spice. A generous oak backbone provides the foundation for plums, nectarines, black pepper, clove, chamomile tea, and piney cedar that sweeps into a dry oak, cocoa, iced-tea finish. Although a bit hot at times, the balance and array of flavors is an outstanding coup for this young distillery. (SSB, Winter-2018)" K&L Notes: Quite frankly, there isn't a project in Kentucky as exciting as New Riff if you're a classic Bourbon fan. Ken L...

Gin Mare is a product we discovered in Scotland, of all places, years ago while searching for single malt. The retailer across the street from our hotel in Edinburgh was featuring the gin in a tasting that evening and we went over to check it out. Distilled in Spain with olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme, it's a savory and truly Mediterranean experience. The herbs never overpower the palate, however, as the balance between them is quite delicate and refined. It's definitely an ideal choice for martinis, paired with olives, of course.

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mild lemongrass and pine aromas lead the nose. The palate treads lightly with mild lemon and lime. Fleeting lemon-sugar sweetness winds into a fiery pink peppercorn exhale. Botanicals include yuzu, ginger, turmeric and sencha genmaicha (Japanese green tea with roasted brown rice).(KN)" (03/2023) K&L Notes: Four Pillars is not new to most K&L customers. If you ask for a gin recommendation in any of our stores, you're likely to hear a staff member enthusiastically recommend you try one of their many gins. The flagship product...

Whisky Advocate: "A whiff of mealy, floury apples, pear, candied lemon peel, and fruit teas, this is certainly light and fruity, genteel even, yet a little timid overall. Soothing and creamy to drink, there's poached pears in condensed milk, white grape, a slow-paced crescendo of spice, and a dash of tangy citrus peel, followed by canned pears and a whir of spices on the finish. Carefree whisky for happy-go-lucky drinkers. (JM, Winter-2021)" K&L Notes: Few things in the whiskey world are as exciting as a new addition to the Compass Box core lineup. Know...

This excellent Folle Blanche is from a wonderful producer in Les Landes, Domaine du Miquer, run by Jacques Lasserre, a veteran of the business and former itinerant distiller. He knows every aspect of production from the vineyard to the bottle, and you can tell it right away when you taste his brandy. They are polished and exquisite in quality. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "At first, this whiskey is easy to underestimate, since the amber color and mild toffee aroma give little away. But one sip, and it is clear this whiskey means business: Deep vanilla cookie and cigar tobacco flavors unfold to a big, burnt-caramel finish, which washes over the palate like a rolling wave. Manhattan-worthy. (KM)" (03/2011) K&L Notes: Finally, cask strength Jack. Not sure how long this will last, but at least we've got some serious juice coming out of Lynchburg. Critics, even the ones who discount the brand outri...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The bouquet is subtle and alluring, with distant notes of buttered popcorn and escarole broth; aeration stimulates aromas of peanut butter, rye toast and damp cobblestone. Silky palate entry is slightly sweet, concentrated and grainy; at midpalate, the flavor turns drier, lightly spiced and almost fruity (as in dried fruit). Aftertaste is long and spicy. Well crafted and quality driven." (06/2004) K&L Notes: Made from 100% Polish rye, the Potocki vodka might be the best vodka we carry. It's the cleanest, most pure form of...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mildoak and vanilla aromas lead the nose. The robust palate opens with a dusting of cocoa. Adding water transforms that into milk chocolate and vanilla richness. Each sip exits with black pepper and a lemony zing. Aged at least four years. (KN)" (06/2021) K&L Notes: Buy a bottle - Redwood Empire plants a tree. The plush, slightly viscous palate echoes those flavors, layering on bright flickers of cedar and lemon peel, plus a hint of funk reminiscent of agricole rhum. It finishes with a warming clove tingle on the tip of the tongue. Tam, and the distiller describes it as akin to 'drinking a martini in a pine forest.' Some will find the juniper essence too strong, although it also reads as clean and bracing, and it's laced with a peppery finish. Botanicals include Douglas fir, fennel, bay laurel and sage. YOLA Mezcal holds a perfect balance between authenticity and aesthetics. Created in collaboration between Yola Jiminez (of La Clandestina Mezcaleria fame), Lykke Li (Swedish songwriting sensation), and Gina Correll Aglietti (chef and stylist), YOLA counters the patriarchal system ubiquitous in Oaxaca. YOLA is run by women, bottled by women. We've seen time and again that no palenque succeeds without the contribution of strong women, and YOLA provides a place where the women of Oaxaca can have steady work. The result is absolutely delicious mezcal that wi...

The exceptional San Bartolo brand was conceived by Daniel Martinez and his grandfather legendary mezcalero Valentin Martinez Lopez. Don Valentin has been making mezcal in the little village of San Bartolo Yautepec for more than 50 years, and his connections with mezcaleros in this remote corner of Oaxaca are deep. Their closest allies are in the neighboring village, Santa Maria Quiegolani. Here Maestro Enrique Diaz Cruz has been making mezcal for most of his nearly 70 years. The village is located at 7,000 feet, deep into the Sierra Sur, about 1.5 hours ...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Distilled from corn and finished with raw honey, this barrel-aged bottling is billed as a “modern day adaptation of Old Tom Gin,” a sweetened style. It has a burnished rose gold hue and the scent mingles honey and juniper. It's slightly sweet up front, with brisk pininess midpalate before it fades into vanilla and a surprising brush of peach. Bulleit 12 Year Old Rye Whiskey (750ml)
Top Pick!
Bulleit, the nation's number-one rye whiskey, added a 12 year to their lineup back in 2019 and it sold out instantly. The same 95% rye, 5% malted barley mashbill is used here, and longer aging provides more smoothness, richness, and a longer finish than the standard rye. Now in 2024, the blend includes whiskies up to 17 years old and remarkably, the price is little changed despite the inflation we've seen over the last 5 years. There is virtually no American whisky available at 12 years old under the $50 mark. This makes this latest release from Diageo o...

Amaro Angeleno is LA's answer to the exploding Amaro scene. The Italian culture of drinking bitter liqueurs is centuries old. Since at least the early 1700s, distillers across the Apennine peninsula have carefully guarded their secret recipes, usually traced back to some famous monastery, often promising good health, strong loins, or long life. Using both local and exotic ingredients they created something truly unique to place. In that image, Amaro Angeleno was created to be a true product of terroir, inspired by those that came before, but distinct fro...
