We recently received a parcel of these beautifully mature wines from Balcom Family. The wines were made by renowned winemaker, Craig Becker, formerly of Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Spring Mountains Vineyards, and currently Director of Winemaking at Sommerston Estate. The fruit for these wines was sourced from Constant Vineyard high on Diamond Mountain, and Somerston Estate's hillside blocks in Napa's Vaca Mountains. The wine's name, "Mascaret," pays tribute to the Bordeaux region that inspired the wine. The Mascaret is a wave, or tidal bore, that runs up t...

Finally, the great 2010 Gran Reserva from our favorite Rioja winery has arrived! As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to th...

2014 Louise Brison Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fermented and aged in wood, this Champagne is still young but is showing fine potential. The wine's acidity gives it a crisp texture and brings out the citrus and green-apple flavors along with the nervy edge. It will certainly age, so wait to drink until 2022. (RV)" (12/2020) K&L Notes: This Champagne was made in the most expensive way possible. The entire Brison estate is organic, and the wine is entirely barrel fermented. No detail is forgotten in making the vintage wines here, as the owner, Delphine Brulez, has a diploma...

2011 Beronia Gran Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Spectator: "This maturing red retains freshness, with a plump texture and lively flavors. Currant, cocoa, licorice and loamy earth notes are supported by gentle tannins and orange peel acidity. Gentle, yet deep and focused. Not showy, but complete. (TM)" (10/2020) 92 points Decanter: "A wonderful combination here of coffee, tobacco, leather alongside black cherries, figs and prune flavours. This Gran Reserva spends 28 months in oak barrels and 36 months in the bottle until it's released. It has a smooth and velvet-like texture with ripe ...

2008 López de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "Lots of dried fruit with plum, light raisin, chocolate and toasted oak. Some balsamic undertones. White truffles and dried flowers. Medium body, creamy tannins and savory, balsamic undertones. Extreme and unique, as always." (11/2020) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodie...

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought two hectares of vineyard and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first-ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. Daniel and his wife Monique have continued to work on the quality of their wine...

The Fallet family traces its wine growing history back to 1610. Following the marriage of Geneviève Dart and Gaston Fallet in 1953, the Fallet-Dart brand was founded in 1970. The wine is composed of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir that is fermented in a mix of oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. It is then aged for at least seven years on the lees.

This blend of 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay comes exclusively from the Brochet families estate in the premier cru of Ecuiel on the mountain of Reims. It is dosed at just five grams per liter and sees 10% barrel fermentation. This exceptional vintage Champagne reminds me of some of the best 1988s that I tasted when they were young. This is streamlined, elegant and graceful Champagne with beautiful pain au levin toast and savory dark cherry Pinot power. If you like this as much as I do, it is worth getting some to age. “Classic” vintages like this are ...

2008 Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Enthusiast: "From the excellent 2008 vintage, this is a very complete, ripe wine. It is rich, packed with crisp white fruits that are developing into a structured, concentrated wine with a great future. The balance between acidity and dosage is just right. *Editors' Choice* (RV)" (12/2016) 92 points James Suckling: "Attractive depth and weight, there's a savory, berry and sous bois edge to the nose with a punchy fresh melon, lemon and peach core of fruit flavor. Taut and fresh. Builds to pastry on the finish. " (10/2017) 90 points Wine...

2016 Diatom (Brewer-Clifton) "Hilliard Bruce Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Starting with the 2016 Chardonnay Hilliard Bruce, it’s a classic Chardonnay from this appellation that offers lots of citrus rind, salty minerality, spice and orange blossom aromas and flavors." (08/2017) 93 points Vinous: "The 2016 Chardonnay Hilliard Bruce is rich and textured on the palate, with a flavor profile that leans towards the riper end of the spectrum while retaining the freshness and energy that are such Diatom signatures. (AG)" (09/2017) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Freshly cut Anjou pear, crisp apple, hints of ho...

2015 Michel Arnould "Carte d'Or" Brut Champagne
New!
The Carte d'Or from Arnould makes up less than 2% of their small production, and then not every year. Patrick Arnould trades grapes with Delphine Cazals for this wine, which is 50% Mesnil Grand Cru from her estate, and 50% old vine Pinot Noir from the Arnould estate in Verzenay. Our allocation is tiny, and this Champagne is capable of very long ageing.

2016 Loxarel (Can Mayol) "Reserva Familiar" Brut Nature Classic Penedes
Top Pick!
Can Mayol, which bottles under the trademarked name "Loxarel," is a winery that has farmed organically for 15 years. The Mitjan family, owners of Can Mayol, also employ some biodynamic treatments. They keep animals, including chickens, a horse, and a donkey named Garnatxa. While the focus is on "Brut Nature" (no dosage added) sparkling wine production, they also produce some very interesting still wines. In their chalky, high-altitude vineyards (above 2,400 feet for their highest vines, among the highest in the Penedès D.O.), Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada...

2011 Pedro Martinez Alesanco Gran Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Sourced from vineyards that are over 50 years old. This is 90% Tempranillo and 10%...

2006 Barde-Haut, St-Emilion
Top Pick!
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2006 Château Barde-Haut also showed well and has outstanding notes of dried herbs, spice box, chocolaty dark fruits, and earth. It's not the most complex wine in the lineup, but it's balanced, medium-bodied, rounded, and undeniably charming." (03/2020) K&L Notes: This is made by one of our favorite producers in St-Emilion, Hélène Garcin, a talented winemaker with a vivacious personality whose wines exude as much charm and life as she does! Barde-Haut is a 250-year-old property that forms a natural amphitheater overlooking th...

2014 Franck Bonville "Millesime" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Back In Stock!
The 2014 Franck Bonville “Millésime” Brut Blanc de Blancs is from a vintage that I have been telling anyone who will listen to load up on. This long, cool, even growing season has given us wines that remind me so much of the 1988s when they were young, and they promise to have a long life… But they taste so good that many won’t make it past tonight! This is all Chardonnay from estate-grown vines in the Grand Cru of Avize, dosed at 6.67 grams per liter. It has the freshness, the baguette toast, and the Meyer lemon cream of the best of Chardonnay in Champa...

91-93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Smoothly polished wine, lovely blackberry jelly flavors and sweet fruit. Ripe, juicy with wood and a potentially good structure. (RV)" (08/2010) 87-90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright purple-ruby. Highly floral nose offers scents of lavender, lily, violet, blackberry, cedar and graphite. Lush, rich and sweet on entry, with rich black fruit and smoky underbrush flavors given adequate lift by lively acidity. Finishes pure, clean and long, with a trace of warmth, lingering notes of minerals and coff...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The swan song vintage of Terry and Frances Leighton's Pinot Noir from the Demostene Ranch, the 2000 Pinot Noir Cuvée DD is showing beautifully, unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet of ripe cherries, exotic spices, grilled game and rich forest floor that evokes many of the aromatic tells one associates with the great wines of the Côte de Nuits, lent a gentle Californian accent by a subtle top note of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with muscular structure, racy a...

89-90 points James Suckling: "Lots of chocolate and nutmeg on the nose and palate. Full and velvety, with a long finish. Yummy." (04/2011) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another superb over-achiever from the appellation of Moulis in the Medoc, this wine, a blend of 48% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, shows lots of licorice, barbecue smoke, charcuterie, plum and black currants. It hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied opulence. The tannins are sweet and the acidity adequate to provide defini...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, De Luze, who is the president of the Alliance des Cru Bourgeois, has produced a dense, ruby/purple-colored wine exhibiting notes of forest floor, spring flowers, blueberry, black raspberry and cassis. This wine looks even more impressive than the 2009, which was another terrific sleeper of the vintage. A superb cru bourgeois that behaves like a classified growth, this brilliant wine can be drunk early on because of its sweet tannin and low acidity, or cellare...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros does not quite possess the complexity and nuance of the Les Preuses this year, although it is still well defined with candied orange peel coming through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, a touch of spice on the tip of the tongue and plenty of salinity. I would just like to see more precision and mineral tones to come through on the finish that does not quite complete what could have been a fine Bougros. Give it 2-3 years in bottle. (NM)" (08/2016)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This impressive white delivers a core of quince, lemon rind and apple that blends with accents of white flower and lemongrass. Crisp acidity drives the freshness on the textured palate, offering elegance and plenty of layers of intrigue. This will do well in the cellar; enjoy 2021 - 2026. (VB)" (05/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(93+) The 2016 Chardonnay offers subdued notes of pear blossom, cheese rind, cremini mushroom, fresh apples, hay and clover honey with baker's yeast hints. The light to medium-bodie...

2010 Maucaillou, Moulis-en-Medoc
Top Pick!
90 points James Suckling: "A firm wine with raspberry and cherry character and hints of lemon rind. Full to medium body, with slightly chewy tannins and an austere finish. Needs time to soften." (03/2013) Wine Spectator: "Offers a solid core of plum and anise framed by black tea and backed by a supple, fine-grained finish. This puts on weight nicely while it airs in the glass, but stays supple and gentle overall. (JM)" (03/2013)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Chardonnay Alder Springs Vineyard displays expressive grapefruit, yuzu zest and orange blossoms notes with touches of cedar, croissant and beeswax. Medium-bodied, fine, fresh and with lovely toasty/savory flavors coming through on the palate, it offers satisfying length and lovely harmony. (LPB)" K&L Notes: 94 points Tasting Panel: "Silky and elegant with lovely texture and precise flavors of tangy citrus and smooth vanilla oak."

92 points Vinous: "Molettieri's 2007 Taurasi Vigna 5 Querce is a big, big wine. Mocha, espresso, game, tar, licorice and dark raspberries meld together in an unusually ripe, flashy Taurasi. The 2007 boasts tons of richness and sheer power, but it needs at least another year to settle down and incorporate its oak. (AG)" (02/2013) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Wild underbrush and exotic spice notes mark the racy black cherry puree and cassis fruit in this rich red, delivering full tannins and a long aftertaste of wild flowers, mineral and spice. (NM)" (06/2...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "A south-facing parcel on shale soil has produced this rich wine packed with tropical-fruit flavors as well as crisper apple and citrus acidity. Aged in wood, the wine has some spice, but it really celebrates great fruit and wonderful acidity. Drink from 2020. (RV)" (06/2019) 90 points Wine Spectator: "The floral aromas on the nose draw you in, while hints of ground anise and coriander introduce the palate. Combining power and grace, the elements of ripe orchard fruit, lemon verbena and prominent minerality mingle to create a...

92-93 points James Suckling: "This is so good already. What an amazing precision of fruit for this wine, with a blackberry and blueberry character as well as minerals. Full and super silky with lovely fruit. Gourmand. Tasty. I want to drink it. Always great value!" (04/2011) 92 points Vinous: "Fully saturated inky-ruby. Somewhat oak-dominated on the nose presently, with aromas of red cherry, rose petal, graphite and brown spices. Rich and lush but less obviously fruit-driven than usual in this vintage, combining sweeter mocha and earth tones with ripe ...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An attractive wine with plenty of black currant fruit, this 1997 provides a ripe entry on the palate, good purity, medium body, and nice length. (RP)" (04/1998)
Price: $44.99

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "A dried-orange-peel headiness on the nose reveals some development. This orange-peel notion gains more currency on the concentrated palate where a streak of freshness accommodates the slight lick of residual sweetness with ease and charm. Concentrated, layered and intense, it shows what a little bottle age does to Gewurztraminer. Lovely now, it's sure to develop further. (AN)" (08/2018) 91 points James Suckling: "A slew of candied fruits and Turkish delight on the nose, which doesn't leave you in any doubt about the grape va...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous 2016 Tricó is a classic Albariño from 25- to 35-year-old vineyards on poor granite soils that give low yields. The full clusters are pressed, then the juice is let to settle before fermenting at low temperature with neutral yeasts. This stays at least one year in tank before it's bottled. These are serious and subtle wines, not exuberant or showy, with good ripeness and very high compensating acidity, but the wines don't feel acidic. This has the advantage of time and has developed further complexit...

96 points James Suckling: "This is a strong edition of vat 1, from a warm and dry season. The nose is all classic lemon and light toast with very attractive purity. The palate is teflon-like, smooth and sleek. So polished and so pure with pristine lemon flavors. Long and fresh. Drink or hold." (10/2020) 95 points James Halliday: "From old, dry-grown vineyards dating as far back as '23, hand picking and sorting eliminated botrytis, leaving a pure display of citrus fruits headed by lemon, with lime and grapefruit also in the mix, all framed by hallmark a...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "There is a strong layer of new wood here, serving to give structure to the rich berry fruits. Plum juice and black coffee round out the dryness, but the texture is still young, needing four years aging. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (06/2010) Wine Spectator: "Fresh and floral, with a berry and tar undertone. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh, clean finish. There's lovely fruit to this. 95 points Vinous: "The 2001 Sémillon is outrageously beautiful. Vivid, rich and explosive, the 2001 possesses tremendous density and character right out of the glass. Orange peel, mint, hazelnut, butter and wild flowers are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop as this compelling, beautifully layered white opens. Even with all of its flamboyant intensity, the 2001 retains striking freshness. I would prefer to drink it over the next few years. It would be a shame to miss the 2001 at this glorious stage of its life. The blend is 75% Sémillon and...

(09/2020) 93 points Decanter: "Autumnal, bonfire character here: savory, truffle, cinder toffee and dried black cherry. A classic yet rich and concentrated wine that perfectly expresses the year and region. (panel tasting)" (01/2021) 92 points Vinous: "Deep garnet. Ripe c...

Presents a long, lush and well-spiced finish. Drink now through 2035. (KM)" (02/2014) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Touches of candlewax and savory herbs add intrigue and complexity to bright, sunny peach and apricot flavors in this semi-sweet wine. 2009 Gaudin, Pauillac
Top Pick!
Located on the gravelly ridges of the village of St-Lambert in Pauillac, Château Gaudin is a vineyard of 4 hectares acquired in 1901. Three generations later, the estate is still family owned and run. The estate is now 11 hectares total with Cabernet Sauvignon dominating the plantings along with a smattering of Merlot and Carménère. Its classic Pauillac stature frames black fruits, tobacco, and gravelly soil tones with robust and firm tannins providing structure.

96 points James Suckling: "Very ripe still, with crushed berry and light jam. Vanilla undertones to the fruit. Turns to flowers, both fresh and dried. Complex cedar, tobacco and walnut. It’s full-bodied with round, soft tannins and a flavorful finish. Richer than past vintages, but turns linear and refined at the finish. Drink now. " (09/2020) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Viña Bosconia Reserva shows the ripeness of the very warm and dry year. It's structured and concentrated, quite different from the finesse of the Tondonia. Bosco...

This is one of those wines that people will be buying by the case all summer long. Why? Well, with its new-world ripeness of red plum, black raspberry and licorice ropes this is totally crowd pleasing.

90 points Vinous: "Luminous straw-gold. Varietally accurate aromas and flavors of smoke, grilled pork, white pepper and tropical fruit, but this has a lemony zing that gives a graceful mouthfeel despite a hint of chewy tannins at the back. The finish is long and ripe. Trimbach does not make this every year but only when they are able to buy good-quality grapes (the wine is made with roughly 95% purchased grapes). The most recent previous Gewürz Réserve was the 2011. About 14,000 bottles made. (ID)" (04/2018)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese has a very clear bouquet, but it still shyly reveals its ripe apple fruit and raisin aromas. On the palate this is a rich, sweet and piquant, well balanced and refreshingly salty Spätlese with a great finesse and elegance. In former issues this wine was always designated as AP #7, but since there is no other bottling of this wine in 2013 I do not refer to the AP number. A particularly rare California sparkling wine produced by Don Baumhefner who had been inspired by late disgorged Bollinger to let his wines rest "en tirage" for years. The San Francisco Chronicle's Esther Mobley fell in love with Baumhefner's 1992 and was excited to report in December 2017 that he had released another wine he discovered in Lake County that had come from a vineyard in Carneros. Mobley writes: "The 2010 Blanc de Blancs smells heady, wafting sweet bread dough. It’s rich, nutty and creamy, and more direct than Baumhefner’s 1990 and 1992 vint...

Eladio Pineiro is an artist. His approach to winemaking is incredibly creative and unusual. The wine spending 15 months with lees aging. This not unusual for Albarino but what is it that this wine spent 3 months aging on the less of the 2014 and 3 months aging on the lees of the 2016. I am still trying to figure out the math on that! After that it is bottled where it will age for an additional two years before release. This shows the aging potential of Albarino. The nose almost suggests old Riesling.
