Port

Port

Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) below are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare. 100 points Wine Spectator: "Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it's probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it's a long-term, great Port. *No. 1 Top 100 Wines of 1997, Cellar Selection* (JS)" (04/1997) 98 points Decanter: " Tight knit – not givin...

97 points Wine Spectator: "A blackstrap, powerful Port. Black, with intense aromas of raspberries, raisins, flowers and stems. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a long, rich finish. Tannins pull at your palate. A wine for the future. (JS)" (12/1999) 96 points Wine Advocate: "The 1994 Vintage Port is set for re-release. It has about 92 grams per liter of residual sugar. It's a beauty, with all that Dow power and structure that I've loved over the years--even after some hours of decanting. Intensely concentrated in flavor, without being jammy, this ling...

100 points James Suckling: "I found a bottle of 1977 Fonseca in my cellar - probably my last. It was absolutely gorgeous. I gave this fortified wine a perfect score in its youth and I think it has finally evolved into its perfection as a mature vintage Port... This is in total balance now with such harmony. What amazing aromas of berry and flowers. Full and sweet, the tannins are complete dissolved. The fruit is perfect. This goes on for minutes. Drink now. But it will go forever." (06/2016) 100 points Wine Spectator: "What a Vintage Port. Dark ruby ce...

100 points James Suckling: "This is, to date, the greatest Vintage Port ever from here. It overwhelmed me years ago when I tasted it from barrel, but only now is it crossing gradually into its drinking window. The intensity is still mind-boggling here, with sweet-and-sour notes as well as mounds of clay. There are violets lurking somewhere too. A full-bodied, medium sweet and sublime Vintage Port, showing forest fruits and freshly picked blackberries on the palate in the form of a creamy, focused and tannic texture." Quinta do Noval LB Port

According to the Wine Spectator: "Deliciously fruity, with plenty of style, ripeness and peppery aromas. Medium body and a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. Much better than in the past. Drink now." (05/94)

93 points Wine Advocate: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous." (12/1988) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Medium ruby-red. Aromas of milk chocolate, plum, mint and violet. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness and lots of berry and cherry fruit. Very fr...

97 points Decanter: "Probably the best wine from a good, ripe though rather variable vintage: still deep at the centre with a thin tawny rim; lovely ripe plummy aromas, open but still brooding with more to reveal; ripe and fleshy on the palate with glorious plum and cherry fruit backed by firm ripe tannins leading to a powerful finish. Ready to drink now and will keep and develop in bottle for another thirty years at least! (RM)" (09/2021) 96 points Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in ...

100 points Wine Advocate: "Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Yet this is still an unformed and infantile wine. If Chateau Latour made a late-harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, I suspect it might smell like this. In the mouth, the wine is out of this world, dis...

Wine Spectator: "Raspberry and red apple scents fill this generous Tawny with vibrant spice. It’s integrated, clean and rich, and will bring complexity to pork chops roasted with apricots." (12/2018) K&L Notes: I think we have found a new favorite, not only in the 10-year tawny category, but possibly in our entire fortified sweet wine collection. This delicious 10-year-old tawny from the house of Ferreira is a perfectly balanced rendition of the style. Aromas of sweet chai spices, confit of dark fruits, and hints of orange peel lead to a sumptuous pal...

90 points Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a typical Douro blend bottled in 2022 with a bar-top cork and 104 grams of residual sugar. This takes the lively Croft 2016, another of the Fladgate Group's houses, and adds a little depth. More importantly, it adds waves of flavor. It is well balanced and just delicious. The structure is average. On the other hand, while very well balanced, it is not quite as lively. Pick 'em. These can hold, but bottle development is not the same with filtered LBVs, so there is little reward to doing so. D...

The German Family named Kopke came from Hamburg to Lisbon in 1636. Two years later, in 1638, Christiano Kopke established himself in Oporto, as merchant and exporter of Portuguese products, and he started the export of Portuguese wines already produced in the region, as part of his business. When the Wine - then known as Portwine - was recognized, the House of Kopke which is today the oldest Portwine's export firm, was one of the leaders in the field. Through many generations, the company was run by several members of Kopke's family, obtaining an excelle...

Wine Advocate: "The NV Reserve Tawny Port was bottled in August 2015 with a bar top cork. It comes in at 123 grams per liter of residual sugar. Sugary on the finish, it is quite delectable and very focused. Emphasizing the sweetness and easy drinking, it doesn't have a lot of depth or power, but there's more than enough for the level. The alcohol does burble up here and there, but overall it drinks well in an accessible style. There is no reason this can't hold if you must, but it is not designed to be held and it doesn't need to age. Dive in. (MS)" (12/...

93 points James Suckling: "Beautiful sweet berries with walnut, toffee and caramel undertones on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with medium sweetness and a chocolate and toffee aftertaste. A richer style of 10-year-old and delicious. " (07/2021) 91 points Wine Spectator: "This has a nice racy edge to the mix of slightly dried red cherry and raspberry fruit, backed by red tea and singed vanilla. Shows good tension from start to finish. Drink now. 500 cases imported. (JM, Web only-2023)" 90 points Wine Advocate: "The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was...

A little one-dimensional still, but impressive. (JS, Web-2008)" (02/2008) 90 points Wine Advocate: "This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop … they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1985 is the sweetest and richest of the recent War...

It was full-bodied with loads of flavor and an intensely flavorful finish. It was perfect to drink. " (06/2016) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Deep garnet. Very pretty plum and berry aromas, with hints of honey and toffee. Turns to custard. Full-bodied, sweet and fresh. Firm tannins, with elegance and balance. Will age for a long time, but ready. Generous, but subtle. " (02/2008) 92 points Wine Advocate...

Full-bodied, with velvety tannins. Long finish with plenty of grip. Beautiful wine. *#15 Top 100 Wines of 1997* (JS)" (04/1997) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 1994 Vintage Port is pure finesse and elegance. 96 points Decanter: "My favourite sub-category of tawny as this combines the freshness of youth with complexity of age: lovely reddish-tawny hue with a toffee and dried citrus character on the nose and palate, now smooth and silky with creamy texture (the concentration of age), the sweet fruit (that is the hallmark of Graham’s) offset by a streak of fresh acidity on the finish. A seamless melange of glorious flavours. (RM)" (11/2021) 94 points James Suckling: "Dried cherry, iodine and peat with some watermelon. Hints of toffee and bark. Medium-to full-...

There’s brisk, tart peach flavor along with more mature tones of pale berries and woodsy mushrooms. Hints of tobacco smoke add to the wine’s elegance." (12/2015) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Racy and fresh, with detailed green fig, dried cherry, incense and hazelnut notes. Offers a long, focused finish. 1970 Graham's Vintage Port
Back In Stock!
94 points John Gilman: "I drank quite a bit of the 1970 Graham’s over the course of the 1990s, but had not crossed paths with a bottle in several years until this most recent example. The wine is superb in 1970, as it displays a bouquet of voluptuous complexity, offering up scents of black cherry, plum, cedar, fresh mint, chocolate, a bit of tobacco leaf, and lovely, estery floral topnotes. On the palate the wine is focused and opulent, with fine framing acidity adding a note of precision to the attack, and with excellent freshness and balance on the sof...

95 points Wine Advocate: "The 1994 Vintage Port is going to be re-released. It has about 100 grams per liter of residual sugar. With a big eucalyptus note up front, this is elegant in the mid-palate with controlled tannins. Sweet and easy in some ways, this is readily approachable now, perhaps not at peak, but more expressive than the relatively brooding Dow's, also reviewed. The hint of caramel and raisins mixed with sugar makes this irresistible. It is sexy and intriguing. (MS)" (10/2016) 95 points Vinous: "The 1994 Graham’s Vintage Port, which incid...

Good mid-deep youthful colour; ripe, heady warm-country nose, similarly ripe and round on the palate, at the same time the fruit is well defined and focused with a touch of bitter chocolate intensity, well integrated dusty tannins with a ripe, supple finish. Wine Advocate: "Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced... The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintag...

From the iconic port producers upriver from Porto in the Duoro region of Portugal, and a Certified B Corporation. Tasting notes from the producer: "STYLE: White Heights is a fragrant, high-grade, slightly drier white port produced from the top 10% of grapes from the high-altitude vineyards of the Favaios sub-region of the Douro Valley, giving it more acidity, freshness, and lift than other white ports. TASTING NOTES: Fresh tropical fruit flavours such as papaya and pineapple lead the way, supported by light aromas of honeysuckle. Crisp yellow plum and pe...

97 points Wine Advocate: "Fonseca has scored in both the 1991 and 1992 vintages. The 1992 is a majestic young port that should ultimately rival, perhaps even surpass this house's most recent great efforts (1985, 1977, 1970, 1963). This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaque black/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied and unctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed port reveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. It is a magnificent port that will age wel...

98 points Wine Advocate: "At present it offers very pure blackberry, mulberry, and a touch of smoke...not giving much away at the moment but surely destined to down the line. The palate is very refined, very pure with svelte tannins with ebullient ripe red fruits laced with tobacco, nutmeg and white pepper. Long and caressing on the finish, this should evolve into a masterful Taylor’s Vintage. (NM)" (07/2011) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This was perhaps the most prototypically 'Taylor' wine of the vertical, with complex floral and spice aromas backed b...

97 points Wine Spectator: "A big, tough Port for long-term aging. It underlines what people mean when they say a great young vintage Port should overpower one's plate with fruit and tannin. Inky color, with perfumed cherry and berry aromas, full-bodied, with tons of tannins, intense cherry and berry flavors and a lingering finish. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a 'linear' and more 'correct' Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. (NM)" (06/...

90 points Vinous: "The 1975 Taylor's Vintage Port is mature in color, lighter on the nose than either the 1970 or 1977 with wild strawberry, cherry, pencil lead and sawdust. No, it is not complex, but it is clean and fresh. The medium-bodied is more driven by fruit than other vintages and lacks a little structure, yet there is an attractive smooth texture. 97 points Decanter: "From an early harvest after a hot summer which produced a small quantity of super-concentrated wines: wonderful inky-crimson colour; closing down on the nose but with underlying ripe plum and berry fruit, almost minty and exotic in its ripeness; made in a deliberately rich style with more residual sugar than normal, dense on the palate with broad ripe, gravelly tannins and a big expansive finish. Concentrated butterscotch sweetness, a touch honeyed but not cloying as the acidity cuts in and offsets this, leading to a long, beautifully poised finish. 97 points Wine Spectator: "Juicy and muscular, with a ball of plum paste, warmed fig compote and black currant reduction flavors that need time to unwind. Ample graphite- and bramble-accented grip underscores the fruit on the finish, while a ganache note finds room to strut its stuff in the end. Should be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. *Top 100 Wines of 2021, Collectible* (JM)" (02/2021) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "While this vintage was not generally declared as such by the major Port houses, it has produced some very fine wines. 90 points Wine Advocate: "Dark and stern, leaning more to figs and dried plums than sweet red fruits, this very expressive and intense Reserva has unusual power for a Ruby Reserva and plenty of concentration for the category. One or two may have been its equal, but there was no wine in this report that showed better after being held for another two days. At that point, it still showed surprising power and coated the palate. As time went on, when a lot of the Reserves in this report fell off, this just got better. The gripping finish, even two days later,...
