2021 Catena Zapata Cabernet Franc San Carlos
Review Date: 12-31-2023
This vineyard designate is composed of 100% Cabernet Franc that aged 6 to 8 months in 100% French oak barrels (30-40% new). Beautiful bluish-red in the glass with a bluish-red nose to match. Juicy olallieberries mingle with fresh black plum followed by lilac and lavender florals with a pinch of white pepper and sweet, sticky whole-leaf tobacco. Very pretty, youthful nose. Needs a little air after being cooped up in glass and so far from home. Silky, seductive medium body and soft approachable tannins beckon another sip. Sinking teeth into the taught skin of a juicy black plum, dark berries, black tea, sandalwood, a pinch of finely ground white pepper and whispers of iron oxide. Good acid levels keep things fresh. So much pleasure—makes me wish I had bought more. Excellent value for admirers of Cab Franc and delicious wine in general. I enjoyed this with a Spanish charcuterie plate of Serrano ham, sliced chorizo, salchichón sausage, cheese, and Marcona almonds on a rainy San Francisco day. Would also pair well in fairer weather — grilled veggies, barbecued chicken thighs, or a thick medium-rare steak. Savory snacks and a good book would be fine too—my default modus operandi. Salud!

2020 Akitu "A2" Pinot Noir Central Otago
Review Date: 09-12-2023
This is the second vintage of Akitu A2 that I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy. When the 2020 hit the shelves, I immediately bought two bottles. I love feasting my eyes upon the luminous garnet clarity of well-made Pinot Noir. A2 was an alluring gem in my glass. Fresh Bing cherry, raspberry, violet hard candies, and a tiny wisp of tar in the finish. This went beautifully with roasted chicken and potatoes. Akitu makes it easy to keep things simple and let the wine do the talking.

2021 Puppione "INTERO - Don Miguel Vineyard" Russian River Valley Syrah

Intero means “whole” in Italian. Made with 100% whole-cluster Syrah from Don Miguel Vineyard, Russian River Valley. Aged in neutral oak. Naked Syrah in all its beautiful glory with layers and layers of flavor—fresh black plum, sexy bacon, black tea refinement, with an expansive finish. Great texture—lively with food-friendly acidity. Another one that can be enjoyed now or aged further.

2021 Puppione "MAGARI" Sonoma County Proprietary Red Blend
Review Date: 04-08-2023
Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% whole-cluster Syrah, both organically farmed. Foot tread and fermented with native yeast. Strikes a perfect balance between the two varieties. Cleanly defined—full of life and energy. The winemaker allows the place and varieties come to us. The nose recalls summertime golden hour in Russian River—the skin of a freshly picked Santa Rosa plum, lavender, sweet sun-dried grasses—filling me with a sentimental longing for summer in wine country. Pure cassis and plum on the palate, with tobacco, sage, and violet—bringing me back to earth in an ephemeral moment of satisfaction. *Gold Medal, 2023 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition*

2022 Puppione "FESTA Rosso" California Red Blend
Review Date: 04-08-2023
This chillable red is a smile in a glass. Made of 45% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Friulano. On both the nose and palate comes a jasmine whisper from the Fruilano, followed by fresh red cherries, black plum, pomegranate, and violet. Vivacious acidy with food-friendly tannins. I can see Festa Rosso being an invigorating reward at day’s end. The ideal pairing would be with friends, music, great conversations, and yummy snacks—or in a comfy chair with a good book and a purring cat in your lap. Don’t forget to give this wine a light chill—it’ll really shine at a lower temperature.

2010 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Review Date: 12-31-2022
Made under Hélène Garcin's watch — composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot that aged 16 months in 50% new barriques. Deep, dark cassis on the nose with hints of cola and toasty, vanilla oak. Flavors of cassis, bay leaves, cola, vanilla, and minerals, followed by a lengthy finish. Pair with a juicy steak or grilled veggies.

Kanbara "Bride of the Fox" Junmai Ginjo Sake (720ml)
Review Date: 12-11-2022
Made by Kaetsu, which was founded in 1880, this immensely satisfying saké comes to us from the Chūbu region of Niigata and is made from Gohyakumangoku with a 50% polishing rate. SMV +3, TA 1.6 = on the edge of dry and rich. Kaetsu's Toji, Yamaga Kenichiro, has been making saké for more than 50 years. Kanbara Bride of the Fox is muroka, which means non-charcoal filtered. Muroka saké presents as bolder in both mouthfeel and complexity of character. On the nose there's subtle porcini mushroom and a complex botanical melange with fresh coastal sage as a primary note, bees wax, and sticky rice. The mouthfeel is dense, medium-plus body with flavors of porcini mushroom, coriander seed, steamed rice, and honeycomb wax. This will appeal to those who appreciate bolder full-bodied wines and sakés. Pairs beautifully with red meat and grilled vegetables, or nothing at all.
