2018 Tantaka Hondarrabi Zuri Arabako Txakolina
Review Date: 04-08-2021
I love txakolina. Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lotta out here. Ameztoi introduced this delicious juice to the rest of the world and set the standard. As a proud card carrying member of the Rubentis rose txakolina cult, I don’t blink twice when it comes to spending over $20 on some Basque glou glou. That being said, this txakolina’s a little more intellectual than expected. At 14% ABV, this ones’ got a little more body to it. You can expect a longer finish to savor its complexity. Still crisp and high-acid, asking for some seafood. Txakoli is neither the name of the place nor the grape. It’s simply the name of the wine made exclusively in Basque Country (Pais Vasco). Oh, and it also goes by txakolina. White wines dominate this part of Spain and its wines are made from Hondarribi Zuri (white) grapes. DO Arabako Txakolina is the smallest, driest and most continental of the 3 Basque DOs. In contrast to the other two, Arabako Txakolina generally exhibit riper, richer, and fuller-bodied than its northerly neighbors - Bizkaiko and Getariako (Getariako is where Ameztoi is from).

2018 Jose Antonio Garcia "Unculin" Bierzo
Review Date: 04-08-2021
This is my strawberry wine. The first time I put my nose to this wine, it took me back to my chef days when we had cases of Seascape and Albion strawberries from Dirty Girl Produce in the Spring. They perfumed the entire walk-in refrigerator. Bierzo is a remote and mountainous region that lies in the northwest of Spain. Though technically within the administrative territory of Castilla y Leon, this region receives considerable maritime influences due to its proximity to Galicia, allowing it to experience a milder and wetter growing season than the rest of Castilla y Leon. About 75% of Bierzo vineyards are planted with the indigenous Mencia grape, more commonly found in Galicia than Castilla y Leon, where Tempranillo dominates. Mencia is thin-skinned, fruity and aromatic, making a red that’s both refreshing and flavorful. Some pin it between syrah and pinot noir, Bierzo reds can play nice but is also a little extra, making it memorable. On the nose and palate, I get straight up ripe wild strawberries (not sweet or jammy). Brambly. Medium-bodied and just enough tannin to lend structure. The bright acidity on the finish will invite you for another delicious sip. You will not forget this one. Wines made from the Mencia grape are incredibly versatile. You can pair this with simple roast and grill preparations of duck, pork or lamb. It can also stand up to more complex flavors of sweet and soy in Chinese and Korean cuisine. *chef's kiss*

2017 Douloufakis "Dafnios" Liatiko Crete Greece
Review Date: 03-21-2021
Do not sleep on this wine. The selfish part of me wants this wine all to myself and not write this positive review for others to find. It is SO delicious. Liatiko is the name of this ancient grape. The word comes from a short-form of the Greek word for July, but the grape rarely ripens before mid-August. Liatiko hails from the Greek Island of Crete, and you can smell suggestions of salinity (not salty) in the glass. The wine’s got a light brick hue, but don’t let the color fool you. This wine’s got concentrated flavor, further amplified by the high acidity and saline character. Historically, this grape’s been used to make a version of sun-dried sweet wine, a true flavor packer. On the palate, you’ll get all the juicy red fruits with some dried autumn leaves in the background. I'm dreaming of some perfectly seared pork jowls to snack on with this. Could play nice with some of the sweet-savory Asian dishes as well.

2019 Lomond Estate Sauvignon Blanc Western Cape
Review Date: 03-17-2021
All of South Africa’s top wine districts are in the southwesterly coastal regions. Cape Agulhas, as the label on this bottle suggests, is situated in “the southernmost tip of South Africa”. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find cooler climates here from that Antarctic influence. Sauvignon Blanc is the third most planted grape after Steen (aka Chenin Blanc) and Chardonnay in South Africa, but this doesn’t stop Savvy B from coming up as one of the most distinctive in the world. In this bottle, you’ll find all the classic, textbook tastings notes of a sauvignon blanc. The herbal, grassy, green bell pepper notes take a backseat, allowing the citrus and mineral notes to come through. The flesh of fresh-cut lime, grapefruit, juicy white peach, goldenberry(aka cape gooseberry). Well-made, well-balanced, flawless. Sandwiched between the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, the wine region of South Africa benefit from an abundance of seafood pairings: lobster, abalone, mussels, calamari, clams, oysters, and a variety of fish. Other more classic pairings to try are goat cheese and Cheetos.

2018 Luis Seabra "Xisto Ilimitado" Douro Tinto Portugal
Review Date: 03-04-2021
The Portuguese drink an average of 13 gallons (65.6 bottles) of wine per person per year. A country smaller than the state of Kentucky produces so much wine that it is ranked 10th in the world by volume. Here, traditions run deep, vineyards worked by hand, and grapes crushed by foot. While Portugal may be better known for Port, Madeira, and Vinho Verde, its Tinto Douro is a hidden gem that has a wide range of styles to fit your taste and budget. This is the wine of Oporto before Port. Before the 1600s, before the Portuguese regularly fortified their wine with grape spirits for the voyage to England. Xisto Ilimitado is a field blend of 6 varieties, among which are the usual suspects found in Port, Touriga Franca (30%), and Tinta Roriz (20%). Like Port, the vineyards for Douro table wines are on rocky hillsides of schist, where ‘xisto’(shEE-sto) comes from. Winemaker Luis Seabra, formerly at Nieeport, is a minimal interventionist. Xisto Illimitado undergoes 100% natural yeast fermentation, and one year of neutral oak aging. This wine exhibits Old World elegance and surprising acidity along with New World fruit-forward palate due to the warm climate. Truly the best of both worlds. Light to medium-bodied and a small detectable level of tannin, this wine is an easy weekday dinner pairing, or to be drunk by itself, by the bottle, if not by the gallon, as the Portuguese do.

2018 Hyot, Côtes de Castillon
Review Date: 03-02-2021
The Cotes (coast/slope) de Bordeaux refer to the large region on the right banks of the rivers and estuary of the famous Bordeaux wine region of France. The vineyards are west-facing sitting on clay and limestone soils. Castillon, more specifically, lies on the Right Bank of the Dordogne river. Unlike its Cabernet-dominated Left Bank cousins, Castillon features predominantly Merlot due to an abundance of clay, for which the grape is well-suited. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon also make up a small part of the blend. Chateau Hyot is headed by winemaker and consultant Michel Rolland. The Auberts own five major properties and over six hundred acres of vines. Amelie Auberts comes from seven generations of wine makers. The grapes used in the wine are from 40+ year old vines, yielding smaller quantities but at higher quality. The old vines capture the essence of the region’s unique terroir. At $13.99, this vintage offers great value for a young Bordeaux without compromising on quality. Red berry and black currant notes lie underneath a bouquet of dried flowers. Merlot’s supple tannins, plus 20 months of oak aging make this 2018 vintage more approachable than other Bordeaux blends of the same vintage. Its fresh finish makes it a good choice to drink now with a well-marbled steak or to hold on to, to be enjoyed later.
