2012 Jean-Jacques Lamoureux "Alexandrine" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 07-28-2020
When Gary told me this Chardonnay fruit was grown on Kimmeridgean soils in Aube my ears immediately perked up. I'm a big fan of Chardonnay grown on that type of soil due to its transparency of the terroir, namely crushed sea shells. As expected the wine is mineral laden with quince and lemon fruits and a creamy finish. The beads are soft and the acids are there but not overtly so. The finish is long and drinks all too easy, very approachable now. This is a nice deal for a vintage Champagne that wont break the bank.

2012 El Coto "Coto de Imaz" Gran Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 07-25-2020
Classic Tempranillo in a more modern style. Dark and concentrated with leather, plums and mulberries with some rich tannins that show there is plenty of youth left here. With some time open it shows a richly textured body, savory yet sweet fruited finsih with enough acid so that its never too heavy on the palate. This is a wine to drink now as well as lay down for many years of drinking pleasure.

2006 Faustino I Gran Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 07-25-2020
This is such an iconic wine that feels like history in a bottle. It amazes me how the Spanish can release wines such as this with so much bottle age at these crazy low prices. Soft on the palate yet with enough underlying structure to let you know that it has the legs to go 12 rounds. A high toned nose of cherries and plums lead to a palate that is light on its feet and graceful. There is an elegance here that reminds me of the great Pinots of France. This is a classic Rioja that would complement a wide range of foods on the table. A really great deal.

2018 First Drop "Mother's Milk" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia
Review Date: 07-19-2020
Tobacco, liquorice, dark cherry and hints of mint are dominant in this wine. There is great purity of fruit here and it glides down the palate like silk. A real bargain for those looking for classic Australian Shiraz that is not too ripe or sweet.

2018 Kumeu River "Kumeu Village" Chardonnay Kumeu
Review Date: 07-14-2020
Lemon curds and marcona almonds on the nose, yeasty with hints of ginger, reminds me of the Santa Cruz Mountains fruit profile. There is very little wood character but a little flint reminiscent of some of the best white Burgundy. The long mineral tinged finish really stands out for the price. Perfect with lemon chicken or crab.

Canard-Duchêne Brut Champagne
Review Date: 05-19-2020
This wine starts off with a fruity nose and hints of stones. The acid balance on the finish makes it the perfect aperitif and hors d'oeuvres champagne and lingers in the mouth with flavors of orchard fruits. Definitely a crowd-pleaser of a wine due to its easy drinking personality yet with enough complexity and interest to mull over whilst enjoying it. Real champagne for $30! What a deal!

2017 Maryetta "Helluva Vineyard" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 03-20-2020
I know the vineyard well and this wine is classic Helluva Vineyard Pinot Noir which is located in Boonville, in the heart of Anderson Valley. Ripe flavors of fresh strawberries and spice, good acid and a lovely texture lead to a wine that drinks well now and will hold for many years to come. We taste a lot of Pinot Noirs here at K&L but this one stood out to me because it was very good and at $20 is a screaming deal!

2017 Martin Ray Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 02-28-2020
Soft and supple, cherry and strawberry fruited, with minimal oak flavors, this is an easy drinker and a great value. Its on the jammier side of the fruit spectrum but still has enough body and Cabernet flavor to make us happy. Where else can you find a Napa Valley Cabernet for $20? The perfect daily drinker or party wine to be consumed with or without food.

Krug "Grande Cuvée" 167 Ème Édition Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-18-2020
We were lucky enough to drink this side by side with the 168th edition at a recent staff tasting (cheers Gary!). Based on the 2011 vintage, this cuvee is a blend of 12 vintage wines going back to 1995. 47% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay & 17% Pinot Meunier. A rich nose with buttered toast, fine bubbles, elegant and refined, this is weightless on the palate yet has a long lingering finish that goes on and on. This is classic Krug.

2017 Artadi Viñas de Gain
Review Date: 01-25-2020
There is a beautiful crimson color to this wine. It is a modern yet classic example of Tempranillo, with a very well balanced combination of oak, fruit and acid. Cherry flavors with a hint of leather. You get a lot of wine for your hard-earned dollars considering that this is under $25. Even though it does not say Rioja on the label, it is indeed from the region. This is quality winemaking as you would expect from a producer such as Artadi.

Mas Codina Brut Rosé Cava Penedes
Review Date: 01-03-2020
This Cava rose is just so easy to drink. You will be hard pressed to find a better rose bubbly in the store at this price of under $15. Crisp fruit and acid show that Pinot Noir grown on chalky soils in the hot climate of Spain can still make an outstanding bottle of wine that is just plain fun to drink and will be empty before you know it. Perfect party wine.

1979 North British 40 Year Old "Old Particular" Single Refill Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Review Date: 11-23-2019
Only 257 bottles of this single cask 40-year-old whisky were filled. This reminds me of a British custard cream biscuit. Honey and floral aromatics give way to a warming finish. This would be a perfect dram to drink by the fireplace on a cold winter's night. A single malt with this much age would cost a heck of a lot more than this.

2018 Bonny Doon Vineyard "Le Cigare Volant - Cuvee Oumuamua" Monterey County Rhône Blend
Review Date: 10-29-2019
Randall Graham, one of the original Rhone Rangers, is back with his hommage to Chateauneuf-du-Pape and alien visitors, Le Cigare Volant. The 2018 is a blend of 52% Grenache, 35% Cinsault, and 13% Syrah. The wine is lighter than previous vintages which must be due to the high proportion of Cinsault in the mix and no Mourvedre this year. The wine is bright and fresh with flavors of kirsch and berries, nice acid and is drinking really well right out of the gate. This would be great on the table with Thanksgiving fare or other holiday favorites.

2015 Tongue in Groove "Cabal Vineyard" Pinot Noir Waipara Valley
Review Date: 08-21-2019
A full-bodied single vineyard Pinot Noir from New Zealand that delivers on quality and price. It has plenty of fruit but is well balanced with a nice bouquet of savory spices on the nose with some silky tannins on the finish that lead one to think it can be drunk now or kept for another 5-8 years.

2016 La Massa "La Massa" Toscana
Review Date: 07-30-2019
This wine has lovely fruit flavors of plums and black currants. It has great weight and density all framed by nice acidity, making it very well balanced. I would love to lay some down and see it evolve over the next 5-7 years. A lot of wine for your money. Highly recommended!
