2015 Domaine Les Pins Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes
Review Date: 12-02-2018
This reminds me why I love Cab Franc--what an ethereal and complex grape! And what a lovely wine. It has savory notes of curry, incense, and tobacco all underpinned by bright berry fruit and silky tannins. A medium body and a long finish that'll have you contemplating what you just tasted for minutes after. All this for $16.99. A steal! Put a big cassoulet in your crock pot and then pop this baby open alongside it for a perfect dinner.

2016 Domaine de la Réserve d'O "La Réserve d'O" Terrasses du Larzac
Review Date: 11-29-2018
This wine from the Languedoc is layered and alive and full of flavor—blueberries, blackberries, brambly forest notes, and baking spice on a medium body with nice, firm tannins. Owners Marie and Frederic Chauffray farm organically and biodynamically, and make wines with real heart. A roasted, herbed pork tenderloin would do it justice.

2017 Gentilini Robola of Cephalonia Greece
Review Date: 11-17-2018
A high-acid, fresh wine exuding aromas of lemon zest and citrus oil. There's a broadness to the palate, and it would pair up nicely with Parmesan cheese or aparagus risotto. Grown in the Cephalonia region of Greece, on one of the Ionian Islands, which is increasingly getting some spotlight for its awesome wines. The vineyards are near the ocean and there's a sea-kissed, sun-kissed vibe to this. Certified organic.

2016 Domaine Nerantzi Assyrtiko Serres Greece
Review Date: 11-17-2018
I love Assyrtiko--it's a deep and complex white grape with lipsmacking acidity. This rendition does not disappoint, and it's particularly interesting because it's from the mainland near Macedonia, not the island of Santorini as is generally the case. It's a shiny golden color in the glass, with vivid notes of tart green apples and wet stones on a beeswaxy, luscious palate, finishing off with racy salinity. It's organically grown at high altitude, and it's just delicious. Try it with scallops!

2015 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "La Montesa" Crianza Rioja
Review Date: 11-17-2018
Bright and fresh Garnacha with juicy cranberry, raspberry, and currant flavors. This has an elegant, medium-weight texture that makes it great for weeknight pork chops or weeknight porch pounding. Producer Alvaro Palacio is a bright star in Spain's winemaking firmament, and this is an easy wine to love.

2016 Farnetella Lucilla Toscano Rosso
Review Date: 11-08-2018
For $10.99 this is truly a no-brainer. It's an energetic and well-structured wine with notes of deep red fruits, mint, rosemary, and earth. Easy drinking and delicious. This is your new go-to pizza wine, my friends!

2016 Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aine "Domaine de Roure" Crozes-Hermitage
Review Date: 11-05-2018
This domaine is famous for its "La Chapelle" Hermitage, but they also have a deep roster of single-property bottlings all over the Rhône. Thalabert is an old hunting lodge and a benchmark wine for Crozes-Hermitage, part of their portfolio since the late 19th century. The vines are 60-80 years old, all biodynamically farmed, and the juice is divine: in the glass, it's fresh blackberries--sweet and ripe--plums and baking spice and sage. It has a supple texture while retaining high acid and firm tannins. If this wine were a teenager (which, it is, in wine age), she'd be a cheerleader who writes angsty poetry in her bedroom. No doubt it'll age gracefully.

2015 Clos Saint-Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes
Review Date: 11-05-2018
Vincent and Pascal Maurel are rockstar winemakers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and we've got a small but mighty allocation of their 2016 old-vine Châteauneuf at a killer price. It's deep and complex with that quintessential bright acid of the 2016 vintage. The nose shows savory umami notes with lychee, flower petals, geranium, and plum aromas. Once it's in your mouth there's texture galore with hints of lavender and chocolate. It ends firm and fresh. Snatch this up while it lasts!

2016 Domaine Clos de Sixte Lirac
Review Date: 11-05-2018
Lirac is just across the Rhône River from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and shares some of the same famous rounded-rock galet soils, so this appellation can often offer a heck of a lot of wine for the price. This Grenache-based blend from Alaine Jaume is no exception. It shows the high, lively acid of the 2016 vintage, with a fun interplay of lavender, rosemary, and blackberry notes on the nose. It's alive and fresh and begging to be served with food. Break out the lamb skewers!

2016 Domaine de la Janasse "Tradition" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Review Date: 09-28-2018
Silky and rich like bassy jazz, this CdP opens up on the palate, revealing sweet, deep, rich fruit notes of dried figs, chocolate raisins, and creme de cassis. It's full-throttled and sexy with fine, melted tannins. But there's enough of a backbone there to keep it interesting. It'll drink great on its own or with a big beef stew. Throw in some of that bassy jazz, and you've got yourself an evening.

2016 Domaine de la Ganse Vacqueyras
Review Date: 09-25-2018
This is a bright, juicy charmer, with lively acid and tons of personality--its energy is almost Richard Simmons level! On the nose there are notes of red berries that smell like they're fresh off the tree, leading to a sprightly, spicy palate and firm tannins. This would be lovely with sausages and cheese, or maybe even a gazpacho. What's even better is that winemaker Coralie Onde farms her estate organically and biodynamically. A super fun wine.

2013 Cascina Ca' Rossa "Vigna Mulassa" Barbera d'Alba
Review Date: 08-17-2018
The Mulassa vineyard is located in Canale d’Alba on the Mompissano hill, where the soil is predominantly clayey. This winery ages its Barbera in big Slovenian barrels. This ruby-red wine has a sensual, plummy quality, with notes of sour cherry, sage, black pepper, and even tobacco. It vibrates with a racy acidity on the tongue. There’s a bit of grip on the finish but the overall impression is of balance. Cascina Ca' Rossa was certified organic in 2012.

2017 Palafox Rosé Baja California
Review Date: 08-17-2018
Big things are happening down in Baja. Wineries are popping up left and right from both local and international winemakers. With so much quantity, the wines vary wildly, but the best of it is really exciting. One to watch is Lourdes Martinez Ojeda, who was the winemaker for Brane-Cantenac in Bordeaux before she and Henri Lurton decided to open up a winery in Baja. She's also making the wine for several different wineries in the region. Her Mission rose' from Palafox a highly elegant expression of this much misunderstood grape. It’s fun & funky with a golden raisin, beeswax, and mint character on the nose, but also a dry, lifted finish and bright acid. It’s delicious.

Tamagawa "Red Label" Heirloom Yamahai Genshu Sake (720ml)
Review Date: 08-17-2018
This earthy, intense sake is made by the first-ever non-Japanese brewmaster in Japan, Philip Harper. It is very expressive, packed full of umami and mushroom notes. It's full-bodied and gamey, and would be gangbusters with cheese.

Miyasaka Yawaraka "Sake Matinée" Junmai Sake 720ml
Review Date: 08-17-2018
This is from a 356-year-old brewery that is very well regarded among sake circles in Japan. The 24th-generation heir to the throne has been very innovative, collaborating with DJs, for instance, and rebranding a few of their sakes. It’s completely 2.0 for the sake business. The Miyasaki family has been making Masumi traditional sake, and he wanted to do something avant-garde, so he introduced the Sake Matinée, made in a session style (as in a session-style beer) with lower alcohol. It has a smooth, mild character and delicate flavors of citrus, wild plums, and vanilla. It's delicious and eminently, dangerously drinkable. Good thing for that low ABV!
