2014 St. Jean du Barroux "La Pierre Noire" Côtes du Ventoux
Review Date: 02-19-2019
A more serious offering the 2014 La Pierre Noir is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah with a nose of lead, pepper and black fruits. The palate bursts with spices and an array of berry fruits that run the spectrum from boysenberry all the way to black currant. The finish here is stupendous, with a soft echo of spice and black fruits that lingers on the palate for 45+ seconds before slowly disappearing from the back of the tongue. Bravo! This is a wonderful homage to the heights that can be achieved in Ventoux.

2015 St. Jean du Barroux "La Source" Ventoux
Review Date: 02-19-2019
Saint Jean du Barroux is in the top 2-3 producers in all of Ventoux one of the up-and-coming regions in the Cotes du Rhone. The 2015 La Source is a blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Carignan and 5% Cinsault which results in an earthy, briary nose of pipe tobacco, spice, black tea and animal notes. The palate is electric with notes of black and ripe red fruits perfectly accentuated with lively acidity and crunchy tannins. This is an insanely good red wine and has the complexity of a wine 3-4 times its price. A great introduction to the wonderful wines coming out of the Ventoux.

2016 Grandes Serres "Carius" Cairanne
Review Date: 12-28-2018
Wow! What a stunning wine. From the very first sniff of the glass I knew this wine was something special. Aromas of freshly-squeezed blood oranges, raspberry Grenache and sexy spice aromas erupt from the glass. The palate is an amazing juxtaposition of rich, velvety red fruits against crisp tannins and lively acidity. Large-scaled and mouth filling this wine slowly unfurls to a wonderfully long and satisfying finish. A ridiculous bargain at only $14.99!

2016 Domaine Pierre Usseglio Lirac Rouge
Review Date: 12-18-2018
What a fantastic Lirac! This wine starts out with a drop-dead gorgeous array of Baker's chocolate, marzipan, dark berry and spice aromas. The palate is loaded with macerated dark berries, spice, silky tannins and mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long and smooth and lasts a good 30+ seconds after swallowing. This is a showstopper and easily merits a 6 bottle purchase if not a case.

2015 Domaine de la Janasse Côtes-du-Rhône Reserve
Review Date: 12-07-2018
This is an absolute knock-out wine! Gorgeous aromas of bitter chocolate, marzipan, wild raspberry and exotic spice notes. The palate is a sexy mash-up of red fruits, dried herbs, beef blood and crushed volcanic rock all wrapped around silky tannins and racy acidity. The 2015 Janasse Cotes-du-Rhone shows off the very best of the 2015 vintage in the Rhone Valley which is renowned for its fruit-forwardness and power.

2016 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Beaune Villages
Review Date: 11-21-2018
I was lucky enough to have a wonderful sit-down tasting with Véronique Drouhin, who graciously poured an array of amazing offerings while providing facts and stories that gave a great backstory to why many of the wines outperformed their neighbors. While they make stunning Grand Crus and Premier Crus, one wine that always stands out as a bargain to me is the Côte de Beaune-Villages. A bit larger-scaled, more rustic wine with darker fruits more apparent, spice notes, and an earthier bent, this offering is a great showcase of what Domaine Drouhin can do and of the subtle differences between the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.

While they make stunning Grand Crus and Premier Crus, one wine that always stands out as a bargain to me is the Côte de Nuits-Villages. The 2016 Villages has good structure, with elegant red fruit and subtle spice notes all wrapped around a sleek, feminine body. This is a pretty wine that showcases everything there is to love about the Côte de Nuits without emptying your wallet.

Review Date: 11-20-2018
From one of the most highly-regarded vineyards in all of Alsace comes the 2017 Julien Schaal Riesling Rangen de Thann Grand Cru Volcanique. Minerals, wet stone and the slightest hint of peach blossoms appear on the nose while the palate surges ahead with an energetic array of almond skin, orchard fruits, petrol and mandarin flavors. An impossibly good wine from an amazing vineyard site you owe it to yourself to grab a few of these before they're all gone.

Review Date: 11-20-2018
A wonderful juxtaposition to the "Sommerberg" the Kastelberg is driven more to the minerality side of the Riesling scale with orchard fruits and petrol notes. More powerful and rich than the Sommerberg this is a stunning Riesling that deftly packages its power with a wonderful gracefulness.

2016 Charles Baur Muscat Alsace
Review Date: 10-18-2018
I love a Muscat as a change of pace from the other aromatic whites. A Muscat offers a slightly different taste profile as it tends to lean towards orange and tangerine flavors rather than peach, mango and apricot flavors that Gewurztraminers do. The 2016 Charles Baur Muscat Alsace is killer deal with sexy aromas of orange flowers and spice while the palate bursts with tangerine and mandarin flavors.

The 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes starts off with vivid aromas of lime, acacia and flint notes. The palate is a focused beam of fruit cocktail, lime zest and wet stone. The rush of flavors and complexity here give the wine an energy and feel that make it almost irresistible and such a joy to drink. This is easily one of my favorite white wines I have drunk this year including some Grand Crus and Premier Cru offerings.

2016 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru "Clos des Myglands" (Monopole)
Review Date: 06-13-2018
Faiveley is doing some amazing things in Mercurey. They built a winery in Mercurey, which means they no longer have to truck north to Gevrey-Chambertin all their fruit for vinification--the fruit never leaves the village and can be picked at optimal levels and vinified immediately. The results have been jaw-dropping, with a level of quality I have never seen from Mercurey wines, which are well-known as being hard and angular in nature. Now these latest offerings from Faiveley display beautiful red fruit and are amazingly open and ready-to-drink in their youth. The Myglands is seductive on the nose with aromas of red cherry compote, cinnamon and hints of crushed red roses. The palate is packed with gorgeous red fruits and subtle spice notes along with great persistence on the palate and a fresh, long and lively finish.

2016 Lucien Lardy "Les Thorins" Moulin-à-Vent
Review Date: 04-19-2018
If there is any village in Beaujolais that could pass for Burgundian in style it is Moulin-a-Vent. A beautiful nose of fresh cranberry, rose hips, spice and morning dew leap from the glass. On the palate this beauty exudes delicate red fruit flavors as well as spice and mineral notes. Great body and lift carry this wine all the way thru to the finish which reveals a surprisingly weighty wine. This wine could easily pass for a fine village-level Burgundy.

If the incredible quality of the 2016 Delas Freres "St. Esprit" Cotes du Rhone is indicative of what you can expect from Southern Rhone in 2016-Hold onto your hats!! For under $10 I do not think there is a better value at K&L currently. This is a beautiful red wine with gorgeous aromas of red fruits, spice and mineral notes. On the palate there is a cool rush of red berry, mocha, chocolate nuances and a hit of earth. The acidity is present s well as firm tannins and admirable structure. 2016 Domaine Lafage "Novellum" Chardonnay Pays d'Oc

Easily one of the best white wine values I have tasted this year, the 2016 Domaine Lafage Novellum is the epitome of what the Languedoc/Roussillon is capable of producing. This rich, textured and complex white is layered in tropical fruit notes and baked apple flavors. The wine unfolds with a seamless feel as fruit note after fruit note blends with soft oak nuances. 2005 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Review Date: 09-08-2017
The 2005 Lynch Bages Pauillac is exactly what you want from one of Bordeaux's premier properties. 2005 was a fantastic vintage in Bordeaux and the 2005 Lynch Bages is a monumental wine. Blood red in color with spice and scorched earth notes the palate slowly unwinds to savory berry fruit notes and fine, smooth tannins. Notes of black licorice and mocha complete the long, smooth finish. This is a classic Lynch Bages in every sense.
