2007 Domaine Camp Galhan "Perassieres" Vin de Pays Duche d'Uzes
What a find! Vins de Pays from Languedoc are becoming my new go-to for QPR. All the young guns in France -- the ones not born into famed estates, and have to make a name for themselves down below the radar -- seem to be flocking here, turning the famed "Wine Lake" into something considerably more interesting. They somehow manage to innovate while being very terroir-loyal, and this one's no exception. Inky purple out of the bottle, it's a perfect mix of earthy forest ground cover (the syrah, let's say) and blackberry bramble (which we'll call the grenache). Fennel and red berries and maybe even some mentholation? Trying to recall a day later, I'm not sure about that last -- but I know this was a winner I'll be ordering more of!

2006 Water Wheel "Memsie" Shiraz-Cabernet-Malbec Bendigo Victoria

This is not a find. Even at this price point it's a disappointment (there are any number of better ST and RP 90's out there). One-dimensional and kirschy, with little to recommend it, even as a kitchen quaffer.
