2015 Black Slate "Porrera" Priorat
Review Date: 10-16-2018
Vinified from organically farmed Garnatxa, Carinyena and Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted at 300-500 meters, Black Slate Porrera Priorat is fresh, well balanced and polished. The wine is aged a year in neutral French and Hungarian oak, which allows the natural depth of the ripe fruit to show through. Tart fruit aromas of fresh cranberry and red currant contrast with darker, riper flavors of damson plum, blackberry and cassis. A subtly herbaceous heat lifts the fruit out of the glass and sustains the palate to a long, stony, mineral finish.

2016 Belle Glos "Dairyman" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 10-14-2018
Named for It's bucolic past, the Dairyman vineyard is located in one of the coolest regions of the Southern Russian River Valley, where sunny days and cool foggy nights and mornings allow fruit to ripen evenly and maintain acidity levels. The wine is full bodied and ripe, but incredibly complex and balanced. Ripe fruit aromas and flavors of black cherry and raspberry are tempered by earthy spice notes and mouthwatering acidity. This is a wine that will surely be appreciated by lovers of more generous styles of Pinot Noir.

2012 Louis Roederer Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-09-2018
A classic, broad shouldered Champagne from a spectacular vintage, the 2012 Roederer Brut is crafted from seventy percent Pinot Noir from Verzenay, and thirty percent Chardonnay from Avize. Aromas of delicate red currant, white mushroom and toasted almond hint at the depth on the palate, but this wine exceeds expectation. The palate is broad and rich, but balanced, with flavors of underripe pineapple, exotic spices, and even hints of black pepper, making this Brut a knockout for those who value power and length in a Champagne.

2009 Alexandre Le Brun "Cuvée Dilection" Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 10-09-2018
Made from a blend of eighty five percent Chardonnay and fifteen percent Pinot Meunier still wine, Dilection possesses a deep red hue, with zero dosage. Aromas of tart cranberry, tangerine peel and bing cherry give way to a creamy, but dry palate with wafts of bright, high toned red fruit.

2007 Alexandre Le Brun "Cuvée Fascination" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 10-09-2018
Alexandre Le Brun makes some of my favorite direct import Champagnes, which is partially due to site, (Chouilly Grand Cru, close to Cramant) but also his fastidious approach to winemaking. Relying on cold, slow barrel fermentation, Le Brun creates wines of seemingly endless complexity, and the Fascination is no exception. Mushroomy, leesy, savory aromas lead to a broad palate with hints of caramel that never overpower the delicate minerality of the wine.

Solemme "Ambre de Solemme" 1er Cru Brut Nature Champagne
Review Date: 10-09-2018
This 100% Pinot Meunier Champagne from Solemme is earthy and very dry, with notes of tart red currant and spiced apple. The palate is permeated by deep, clay like minerality, and finishes with a kick of bright acidity, making it a perfect wine for fattier dishes, or those who enjoy appetizers on the spicy side.

Solemme "Nature de Solemme" Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Brut Nature Champagne
Review Date: 10-09-2018
Based on the 2013 vintage, based on one of the latest harvests of recent history, this Brut Nature Champagne is bone dry. Chardonnay planted in the early 1960's offers aromas of underripe pineapple and faint daffodil. The light bodied palate is loaded with saline minerality, and finishes long with elegant purity.

2008 Fallet-Dart Vintage Extra Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-09-2018
As a big fan of the 2008 Brut from Fallet Dart, I was very excited to try the Extra Brut, with a lower dosage. Very focused, with a tight acid line, this wine accentuates the more delicate qualities of the Chardonnay in the blend. This is a wine for those who appreciate subtlety and freshness, as the palate is dominated by persistent, stony minerality.

Review Date: 10-09-2018
With three years on the lees, this delightful Rosé Champagne opens with subtly leesy aromas intermingled with underripe peach and tangerine, while the palate is lightly creamy, and spiked with a surprising tinge of anisette and lemon pith. Jean de La Fontaine "L'Éloquente" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-09-2018
Jean de La Fontaine, our newest direct import Champagne, is neighbors with Fallet Dart in the furthest reaches of the Western region of Vallée de la Marne, known for Pinot Meunier. "L' Eloquente" is Meunier dominant, and shows the varietal's spicier qualities with notes of cloved apple, quince and redcurrant. The palate is clean and dry, densely fruited and is trailed with a distinctly chalky minerality.

2016 Levo "Right to Bear Flowxrs" Santa Barbara County Grenache
Review Date: 09-23-2018
You have the right to bear Flowxrs! This delicious Grenache is blended with small percentages of Syrah and Petite Sirah, which give the wine smoky depth that pulls through the midpalate, leaving a lengthy impression. Heady aromas of rosepetal and underbrush lead to a refined, balanced palate with notes of black and sour cherry and bright pomegranate. The wine drinks like a perfectly ripe Chateauneuf du Pape, with polished, soft tannins.

2013 Wild Horse "Cheval Sauvage" Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 09-09-2018
This Pinot is such an incredible value! Pressed from fruit cultivated in two of Santa Barbara County's finest vineyards for Pinot Noir, Gary's and Murmur, this wine shines in the manner of an "old school" expression of Pinot, one that might be three times the price. Upon first whiff, spice notes bloom from the glass: white and black pepper and underbrush supported by more sappy fruit aromas of ripe raspberry and black cherry. The palate is expansive and broad, but flooded with natural acidity inherent in the fruit, and finishes with soft, fine tannins.

2015 Venge "Silencieux" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 08-28-2018
"Silencieux" by Venge Vineyards possesses an interesting juxtaposition of subtlety and flamboyance. This Cabernet is definitely not shy, with lush Oakville Estate fruit, particularly midpalate. Sourced from seven different vineyards, the Cabernet is classic Oakville, with notes of mint and tobacco leaves, ripe blueberry and boysenberry trailed by focused graphite minerality that cuts through, leaving a dry, lasting impression. Fermented by native yeasts in stainless steel, concrete and open top barrel, the complex Oakville fruit shines bright, and barrel spice is minimal.

2015 Talley "Estate" Arroyo Grande Chardonnay
Review Date: 08-28-2018
The 2015 Talley Arroyo Grande Chardonnay is shockingly good. With finesse and balance, the wine shows bright acidity, saline minerality and structure, indicating potential for long term cellaring, yet possesses generosity of complex ripe and tart fruit, with a subtly creamy texture. This is a wine that drinks and performs well above It's price point, with a light straw hue, and aromas and flavors of orange blossom, lemon curd and green mango.

2016 Lieu Dit "Sans Soufre" Santa Maria Valley Cabernet Franc
Review Date: 08-24-2018
No sulfur? When eliminating sulfur from the winemaking process, there is an element of unpredictability of outcome. In the case of the Lieu Dit "Sans Soufre" Cabernet Franc, nature's efforts have produced a truly beautiful result! Clean, ripe aromas of raspberry, tobacco leaf and subtle strawberry lift from the glass, with a slightly brackish undertone reflective of the coastal terroir. The palate is light, though juicy midpalate, with fine tannins and a mineral driven finish. This is an example of what really excellent natural winemaking looks like.

2015 Neyers Carneros Chardonnay
Review Date: 08-19-2018
The Family owned Neyers Vineyards produces exceptionally high quality wine from their own estate, and some of the finest vineyards in Napa and Sonoma. Fruit for the 2015 Neyers Carneros Chardonnay is sourced from the Jim and Del Yamakawa Ranch, Sangiacamo Vineyard, and Noviellero Vineyard, which is the Westernmost vineyard in Carneros AVA. The philosophy behind this wine is to produce the most flavorful Chardonnay possible, starting with high acidity, thicker skinned Wente clone grapes, and letting nature do the rest of the work. The very first rosé to be bottled and sold in Italy, the Leone de Castris Five Roses Rosato is Italian to its core. With a blend of 90 percent Negroamaro and 10 percent Black Malvasia, the wine shows great depth and intensity, with a weighty, full mouthfeel, and playful aromas and flavors of Bing cherry, rhubarb and summer strawberry. 2015 Lavinea "Lazy River Vineyard" Yamhill-Carlton Chardonnay
Review Date: 07-27-2018
The prevailing concept behind Lavinea production of single vineyard wines: wines that express a sense of place and terroir. With this mission in mind, Winemaker Isabelle Meunier (previously of Evening Lands, Felton Road and Domaine de la Vougeraie) founded Lavinea with co founder Greg Ralston (former managing director of Chateau Montelena). The 2016 Yamhill-Carlton Lazy River Chardonnay is a wonderful example of this winemaking philosophy, reflecting the cool climate and low vigor riverbed soils of the vineyard that contribute to the bright acidity, concentration and intense minerality of the wine. This is a leesy, clean, slightly nutty Chardonnay with mouthwatering notes of underripe spiced mango and tangy lemon peel.

2016 Hartford Court Russian River Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 07-27-2018
The 2016 Russian River bottling from Hartford Court straddles the line between impeccable balance and focused strength. At first waft, aromas of cerignola olive, lemon peel, underripe lychee and marcona almond entice, while hinting at the underlying complexity of the palate. Juicy, bright, and built around the acid line, this Chardonnay finishes in a powerful flourish, driving home with stony, mineral driven precision.

2015 Long Shadows "Feather" Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 07-23-2018
Put together some of the most highly regarded vintners in the world, and give them access to the finest Columbia Valley fruit. That was the premise that gave rise to Long Shadows, a consortium of heavy hitters: Randy Dunn, Phillipe Melka and Michele Rolland to name a few. What we have in the "Feather" bottling is a Cabernet of great depth and saturation, with aromas of black cherry, cassis, tobacco leaf and licorice. Ripe strawberry, plum, blackberry and blueberry glide across the ample palate, but powerful acidity and intense, mouth gripping tannins ensure this wine will stand up to the richest of dishes.

2014 Cristom "Estate" Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir
Review Date: 07-23-2018
This wine is an unbelievable value from Cristom Estate! The blend is based on barrel selections from several Estate blocks in Eola Amity Hills. 2014 was a warmer vintage in Willamette Valley, and the complex aromatics and relatively juicy palate reflect this. Aromas of fresh rose petal, orange blossom, ripe strawberry, tamarind and umami lead to a medium bodied, but beautifully structured palate. This wine is unfined and unfiltered, and as a result, subtly dark herbaceous notes peek through the bright fruit. With balanced acidity and powerful minerality, this wine finishes clean, in a flourish of fine, firm, mouth coating tannins.

2013 Ordaz Family Wines "Montecillo Vineyard" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 06-29-2018
We only have a very small allocation of this wonderful single vineyard Cabernet from Ordaz Family. Chuy Ordaz, who planted the fifty year old vines of Montecillo vineyard, passed his love of wine and viticulture to his son Eppie, who created the Ordaz family label. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is varietally spot on, with aromatics of brooding animalistic umami, green peppercorn, tobacco leaf and dusty chaparral. Stunning red and black fruit and floral aromatics weave in and out of the composition, making a very condensed, complex impression. Bright acidity freshens the palate, and a sandy, fine, mouthcoating tannin leads to a spicy finish.

Review Date: 06-23-2018
Fresh, crisp and mineral driven, the 2016 Renaud Macon Villages sees no oak vinification, and the result is a clean, unfettered expression of dry Chardonnay. Fallet-Dart "Clos du Mont" Brut Champagne (2004)
Review Date: 05-08-2018
"Clos du Mont" boasts a wonderful history dating back to 740, where fruit of the highest quality is cultivated. The 2004 offering is entirely barrel fermented, and shows tantalizing acidity. Aromas of golden sultana, cream, delicate anisette and white pepper make way to a lush, dry palate with endless complexity. Flavors of dark cocoa powder, marine minerality, and hints of clean, almost sherry like oxidation make this a wine that must be experienced by any Champagne lover who has the chance to do so.

2010 Fallet-Dart Vintage Brut Champagne
Review Date: 05-08-2018
The 2010 Fallet Dart Brut is classic and opulent, with rich aromatics of red apple skin, walnut and spiced cherry. The palate is balanced, but ripe, with mild acidity and fine bubbles. What I enjoy most about this wine is the surprising finish, which offers an almost tannic pull, which makes it a wonderful wine to pair with fatty fare like foie gras.

Alfred Gratien "Cuvée Paradis" Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 05-08-2018
If I could have a day in Paradise, I would choose to take a bottle of the Paradis rosé with me. There is no way I would miss the opportunity to savor the obscenely delicate palate that wafts aromas of creme brulée my way, only to entice me with lusciously spiced red delicious apple that sneaks into a lingering finish of bing cherry and summer strawberry. This is a wine based on the 2007 vintage, and offers bright acidity balanced with a toasty, textured quality that is unsurpassed.

2005 Alfred Gratien Brut Vintage Champagne
Review Date: 05-08-2018
This Champagne is a rarity: aged eleven years on the lees, on a cork, rather than crown cap. This allows for less influence from oxygen, and though 2005 was a warmer vintage, this wine retains racy acidity. A blend of 65% Chardonnay, 18% Meunier and 17% Pinot Noir, the wine opens with light aromas of quince and warm candied hazelnut. The palate strikes a juxtaposition with faint, delicate herbaceousness and sous bois characteristics, with elegant minerality and a creamy finish.

Alfred Gratien Brut Classique Champagne
Review Date: 05-08-2018
We are offering the esteemed Gratien Brut Classique at the lowest price in the entire country, and this is a Champagne you must try at least once. Based on the 2012 vintage, the wine is 100% barrel fermented and uses only the cuvée or the first pressing, and is blended with a third reserve wine aged in a solera! Yeasty aromas swirl in a haze of white and yellow flowers, and lightly nutty golden apple, and the palate packs an acid driven punch of green herbaceousness. The finish eases up a bit in intensity, and leaves a refreshing impression.

2008 Le Brun de Neuville "Grand Vintage" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 05-08-2018
The 2008 vintage showed immense diurnal shifts in temperature, and a dry growing season. This resulted in fruit with high acidity and great complexity, which shows in the Grand Vintage brut from Le Brun De Neuville. Using only the cuveé, or the first pressing, this blend is almost entirely Chardonnay from the Bethon village in Sézanne, with four percent Pinot Noir included for structure. Aromas of underripe golden apple, subtle nutmeg, and delicate chalky mineral lead to a light bodied, bright, clean palate with hints of spiced raspberry and red currant. The finish is long with abundant, chalky minerality.

2013 Maysara "Cyrus - Momtazi Vineyard" McMinnville Pinot Noir (Biodynamic)
Review Date: 05-04-2018
In the world of Biodynamic and Natural wines, often times farming and vinification practices seem to matter more than quality and quaffability, but this is a wine that manages to reflect It's natural roots while remaining complex and maintaining balance. The nose is laden with umami aromas, with subtle black mushroom, tart raspberry, bing and black cherry, white pepper, and an animalistic, almost gamey undertone. The palate is surprisingly broader than expected from a wine with moderately low alcohol, and boasts an effusive, stony minerality, finishing long, with demure tannins.

2015 Smith Story "Pickberry Vineyard" Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 05-04-2018
Smith Story brings us one beautiful, deep violet hued, perfumed Cabernet, with subtle wafts of mint that commingle with aromas of black cherry, ripe raspberry, fresh tobacco leaf, pomegranate, anise and black pepper. Such complex aromas are commonly found in Cabernet of Sonoma Mountain AVA, with It's volcanic soils and extreme diurnal shifts in temperature, but this wine is particularly elegant, and sings on the palate with fine, balanced acidity, earthy undertones of green peppercorn, and mouthcoating, silky tannins. This is a wine that can easily cellar for 10 years and continue to evolve.

2015 Band of Vintners "Consortium" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 04-29-2018
Consortium comes from a "Band of Vintners" in Napa Valley, a group of seven wine industry insiders in Napa Valley who know their fruit. The result of their collaboration is a wonderfully crafted balance of Old and New World, highlighting their understanding of the region's wine and history. The nose is complex, with hints of ripe fruit, but with a slightly gamey undertone. Aromas of clove, cinnamon, red currant, black cherry, burnt orange peel and star anise come next. The palate, though predictably lush and dark fruit forward, has an unmistakable grilled green poblano note, a tribute to classic old-world Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine finishes big, with opulent gourmet spice, and mouth-gripping tannins.

2015 Chalone Vineyard "Estate Grown" Chalone Pinot Noir
Review Date: 04-21-2018
Chalone Vineyard is a very special site on California's Central Coast, with low nutrient, decomposed limestone soils and high elevations. The Heritage Clone Pinot Noir grown in this site possesses a distinctive minerality and concentration of flavor, due in part to the soil and cooler climate, but also the diurnal temperature shifts. The wine at first glance looks on the darker, more extracted side, and offers heady aromas of peony, tea rose and black cherry, but the palate is remarkably light and energetic, with balanced acidity and fine, mouth coating tannins.

A standout for me in the lineup was the Selbach Saar Spatlese: fresh and floral, with notes of tangerine pith, star jasmine leaf, slate, and just a hint of sweetness. 2015 Domaine Drouhin "Arthur" Dundee Hills Chardonnay
Review Date: 04-09-2018
True to their motto: "French Soul, Oregon Soil," Domaine Drouhin is the benchmark for Willamette Valley wines, expressing the delicacy and finesse of Burgundy varietals, with Oregon grit. Pressed whole cluster from 100% Dijon Clones, the 2015 "Arthur" Chardonnay is named after winemaker Véronique Drouhin's son, and is represents all Chardonnay can be: mineral driven with focused acidity, yet generously textured and powerful. Aromas of just ripe golden delicious apple and underripe pineapple are followed by a palate brimming with almost saline minerality, lemon zest and light brioche, with an enduring, sensual finish.

2013 Jonata "Todos" Central Coast Red Blend
Review Date: 03-30-2018
Jonata "Todos" is a Syrah based blend from a cool climate, single site estate vineyard in Ballard Canyon. Winemaker Matt Dees harvests prime Syrah and Sangiovese (yes, Sangiovese is 15% of the blend!) from the vineyard rich in Careaga Sandstone, allowing excellent drainage. These conditions in the vineyard create concentrated fruit and wine, obvious from first sight: A deep, opaque ruby core and magenta rim show the intensity of extraction. Aromatic hints of garrigue and baked granite give way to an ample, beautifully balanced palate with bright acidity and chewy tannins. Wild berry, cocoa powder and paprika notes are trailed by a refreshing spearmint herbaceousness.

2017 Marietta "Old Vine Rosé" California Rosé
Review Date: 03-26-2018

The 2017 release of OVR or "Old Vine Rosé" is a blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir and Grenache Gris, and will please any Rosé lover. This is a classic Syrah in the vein of Cote Rotie, with powerful black and red fruit, firm, mouthcoating tannins, and penetrating minerality. The fruit is biodynamically farmed, and the Tulbaugh Estate animals roam freely in the vineyards, adding to the unique ecosystem. 2015 Brewer-Clifton Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay
Review Date: 03-18-2018
The 2015 Brewer Clifton Chardonnay is expressive of the varietal's diversity, with 100% Estate fruit from three cool climate vineyard parcels. These sandy, loamy parcels contribute to the wine's acidity and saline minerality, which lend a zesty, stimulating quality to the palate. This is one California Chardonnay that doesn't go through any malolactic fermentation whatsoever, and is aged in only neutral barrels. As a result of this minimalist approach to winemaking, the wine doesn't show any oak influence, but manages to acquire a delicately viscous texture that maintains It's balance.
