Compass Box & K&L have always had a special relationship. Since the inception of this special brand 25 years ago, we've seen eye to eye on every aspect of this business. It wasn't until 2011 that we were able to connect with legendary whisky maker John Glasser about the potential to do an exclusive for K&L. We had access to anything back then, but one trophy alluded K&L and exclusive Compass Box. That was until 2015 when John Glaser invited our spirits buying team to select an exclusive blend from their stocks, a now legendary blend of old peated malt an...

The much anticipated new release of Arran 10 Year. This fabulous Island Distillery was built in 1996 and their flagship 10 year has been around since 2006. Now, with the assistance of legendary design firm Stranger & Stranger, they've released this wonderful whisky with a completely new look and flavor. Arran is distilled in Lochranza at the first legal distillery situated here, despite the island's long history of illicit distillation. The owners have since built a second distillery across the island called Lagg, devoted to peated malt. The gorgeous new...

The spectacular Ardnamurchan distillery on the far western coast of Scotland is without a doubt one of the top new distillers in Scotland. Owned by Adelphi Distillers Ltd, the famous bottler of high-quality single-cask single malt, they've spared no expense at creating the most sustainable distillery, achieving 2024 "Global Sustainable Distillery of the Year" in the Whisky Magazine's Icon's of Whisky awards. This single cask of cask-strength single malt was filled into a fresh ex-Old Forester bourbon barrel with Ardnamurchan's unpeated malt on February 2...

Orphan Barrel's new release is one of the few distillers that's still operatonal in the series. Linkwood Distillery at 18 years old selected and bottled by the owners, is indeed a rarity in this market. Here is the bottlers description, "Hailing from the pristine landscape of the Scottish Highlands, this rare 18-year-olds Single malt Scotch Whisky aged in American Oak honors the storied history of the Linkwood Distillery founded in 1821. The web of Woven Honor weaves together the essence of Scotland, with its rolling fields of wildflowers to its tranquil...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain. (DB, Fall 2015)" 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky ...

96 points Whisky Advocate: "Incredibly floral on the nose, with citrus peel, sliced apple, burning incense, sandalwood, peach pit, aged oak, and spices so fine you could count them by the grain. It’s weighty and honeyed, driven forward by the mizunara oak character, with waxiness and smoke progressing to lime zest, green apple, kumquat, cocoa, cinnamon, and vanilla extract, with a creamy elegance to the finish.” (JM)" (12/2023) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This blended whisky is an ideal sipper, with an enticing crème brûlée and dried apricot scents. Here's a fabulous follow-up to the exceptionally good 25-year-old unpeated Ardmore that we featured in last year's Whisky Season. This much for typical Ardmore was peated to the usual medium level of around 14 ppm. Of course, this is using highland peat sourced from terrestrial vegetation rather than the Islay peat which is composed of ocean vegetation. Filled into a high-quality 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrel in July of 2009, it was bottled at cask strength of 57% abv without the use of coloring or chillfiltration. The resulting whisky is extremely expressi...

Our friends at Douglas Laing in Glasgow, with whom we do the Old Particular bottlings, have put together a series of regional malt blends that wonderfully showcase the stylistic flavor profiles of Scotlands main whisky producing sectors. Not only are the whiskies accurate reflections of a dying era in Scotch whisky production, they're some of the tastiest and most enjoyable whiskies we've discovered in ages. The Epicurean is the "Lowland" expression that absolutely brims with fresh fruit, sweet barley, and hard candy. It's a barley-rich malt that is like...

This lovely lowland distillery is one of the closest historical distilleries to the city of Glasgow and you might get lucky and see a head of Highland cattle that occasionally graze on the well-manicured lawns if you make the short trek out to Clydebank. Like most Lowland distillers Auchentoshan does a proper triple distillation leaving a finer spirit with fewer impurities and a soft sweet malty character. The distillery was founded in 1823 and operated continuously until being completely rebuilt in the late 1960s. In 1984, the famed whisky maker Stanley...

97 points Whisky Advocate: "This 34 year old whisky matured in the remaining active French oak casks from the original Corryvreckan batch invites you to dive into its complex aromas of dark fruit, chewy smoke, seaweed, plum, chestnut, roasted spices, black olive, salted nuts, soy sauce, and lime peel. Rich, oily, mouth-coating, and drying simultaneously, there’s peppered steak, salted pecan, toffee, soy sauce, umami, mushrooms in red wine, black cherry, leather, oak, and aniseed. Whisky Advocate: "Fragrant and herbal aromas, with pine needles, basil, green bell pepper, pea pod, black truffle, peppercorn, and smoke from smoldering dry mosses and wood shavings. It’s very smooth and refreshing, with pear, peppermint, lemon, lime, green tea, kiwi, and herbal notes, finishing with chopped mint, more herbal layers, and gentle peppery spice. A unique composition and a quintessential Japanese whisky experience. 94 points Whisky Advocate: "For Nikka From the Barrel, it’s been a long road to Whisky of the Year. This Japanese blend made its U.S. debut in 2018, but its inception dates back more than 30 years. In 1985, Nikka Whisky Distilling Company’s blending team, led by Shigeo Sato, designed this whisky using both malt and grain whiskies produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries. When taking into account the full array of casks—bourbon barrels, sherry butts, refill hogsheads, and more—over 100 different constituent whiskies are enlisted.

This is the Thompson Brothers foray into the world of blending. It's also proof that they've got some of the absolute best palates in the business. They seem to be getting access to stocks where others struggle, and this little vatting of over 8-year-old malts is one of the most intriguing and delicious malts on our shelves at any price point. SRV5 refers to Station Road Vat 5, the wooden vessel where this whisky is mingled before bottling. The Dornoch boys bottle in very small batches and the source material is of the highest quality. This is a fully Bourbon-cask matured single malt from one of the three remaining distilleries in Campbeltown. Originally founded in 1872, the distillery shuttered in 1925 and was recalled to life in 2004 by descendants of the original founders. Today, their whiskies show a beautiful harmony in the glass — and this lives up to that history. Aged for eight years exclusively in used Bourbon barrels, this was just released in early 2025 and bottled at 55.6% ABV.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This elegant single malt from Nikka bears a dark, vibrant gold color, with smoke and caramel aromas. On the palate, look for well-balanced notes of citrus peel, cedar and oak, and a gentle waft of smoke. An astringent sensation on the finish sets the mouth watering, leading to a full-bodied, almost oily texture. Recommended for sipping neat. (KN)" (02/2013) 92 points Whisky Advocate: "Yoichi age statements are gone for now, but if the whisky stays this good, I can live with that. Black earthy peat, smoldering fires, a turned...

The lovely Macduff distillery straddles many different regional influences. It sits right near the water at the very northeastern part of Speyside (although some sources put it staunchly in the Highlands region) and it's relatively unusual to see both as independently bottled single cask single malt and the distillery doesn't regularly bottle its own malt under this name. You'll occasionally see the Glen Deveron brand on the market, but this is quite small production as well. The vast majority is reserved for blends and therefore its rare to see Macduff ...

Whisky Advocate: "One for no age statement naysayers. An eloquent expression of sweet osmanthus, baked lemon, yuzu, violin resin, rich malts, and bonfire aromas on a favorite woolen jumper. It glides across the tongue with sweet barley sugar, but attests to greater depths; grapefruit, spicy ginger, and mandarin developing milk chocolate-coated, candied lemon flavors. A firm finish: green cardamom spices slowly releasing their grip on the front of the palate, leaving clingy vanilla. Unbound by an age statement, it's a beautiful offering. (JM, Winter-2016)...

Tenmile Distillery was founded by exceptional people to make exceptional malt whisky. No expense was spared to create a traditional single malt distillery in the Scottish style. The proof is in the pudding with this rare and limited offering that has long since sold out in New York after rave reviews and inflated retail prices, it's made its way out to California to be sold exclusively at K&L. The Tenmile distillery was founded on one simple principle - if the best people take the best ingredients and use the finest time-tested techniques, you'll make one of the world's finest products. Founded in Wassaic, New York on the edge of the Hudson Valley, the gorgeous distillery built in within the walls of an old dairy farm is result of countless hard lessons in doing things the right way. Founder John Dyson was a prominent New Yorker before purchasing and revitalizing the famous Sonoma Pinot Noir producer William Selyem, but his love for the Hudson...

In honor of their 15-Year Anniversary, Balcones presents Cataleja Texas Single Malt; it is a complex and unique tribute to the distillery's trailblazers. This whisky, beginning its maturation in used Kentucky bourbon barrels, was later transferred to decommissioned Sherry Solera puncheons from select Spanish bodegas. After experiencing the impact of the 80+-year-old casks on their first filling, the whisky was moved back to neutral barrels and then blended in with additional solera cask refills, creating a beautifully integrated flavor profile. Cataleja...

Deeper in, grassy notes with star fruit, kumquat, and kaffir lime leaves. The flavors offer perfection in their simplicity: silky honey, soft spices, crystalized pineapple, barley sugar, lemon, and orange. On the finish, the spices chatter on and on as the sweet citrus and honey fade in and out. One to cherish. The Yamazaki Distillery doesn't release new products very often and when the Distiller's Reserve was release in Japan way back in 2014, we were excited to have a new Yamazaki to sell. It only took about a decade or so for them to release the product stateside. While critics hemmed and hawed about the lack of age statements, the public has embraced this release with gusto. Turns out there are some pretty incredible old whiskies in the blend, and it easily competes with the more expensive 12-year-old in the glass and many will even prefer the richer robust...

A rare treat at a stupendous price, the Edradour 21 year is the oldest modern bottling of this incredible distillery at the base of the Cairngorms. This wee little distillery, which now has a second sister distillery running right next door, is one of the most interesting and delicious malts available. 90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The bouquet is austere and leathery with curious aromas of beeswax, vegetable oil and oaky resin. Palate entry is focused on the resin; midpalate is splendidly multilayered and offers elements of black pepper, dried orange blossom, honeysuckle, dried fruit, sage, fennel and confections. Aftertaste is deep and unabashedly sweet and honeyed. *Superb, Highly Recommended*" (12/2009) Whisky Advocate: "Both bourbon and sherry casks were used for aging. Whisky Advocate: "After six ‘Work in Progress’ releases, Kilkerran from Glengyle Distillery has finally come of age with this core expression. It comprises 70% whisky from first-fill bourbon casks and 30% from sherry casks. Floral on the nose, with honey and a hint of brine, then peaty fruit notes develop. The palate is confident and oily, slightly earthy, with tinned peaches, black pepper, cinnamon, smoke, and a suggestion of medicine chests. A highly unusual offering from our friends at Signatory. This gorgeous cask of Pulteney was finished for nearly 4 years or just under a quarter of this whisky's maturation. A beautiful example of what proper secondary maturation can add to an already beautiful malt. Distilled in on May 27th of 2008 and bottled at full cask strength in March of 2022 at 56.2% alc by vol. The little distillery in Wick produces a beautiful ocean driven unpeated style highland malt that very rarely sees high quality sherry, but when it does you often find one of the most deli...

Whisky Advocate: "Hugely floral and perfumed on the nose, with rose petals, violet candies, and dried orange peel. This is the Gewürztraminer of American single malts—sweet lychee, laced with sachet aromas that explode as if opening Grandma’s dresser drawer. The palate is more tropical; dried pineapple, canned peach syrup, and spice. This could be polarizing, but it’s utterly captivating and worth a try. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky is a nod to how it’s matured in three different casks: American Bourbon, Spanish oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry. It’s robust, with a deep amber hue and rich caramel scent. The flavor profile shows toffee, campfire smoke and a mouthwatering butterscotch note on the exhale. It almost reads like a peated bourbon. 94 points Whisky Advocate: "Launched in 2003, Uigeadail remains one of Ardbeg’s core offerings. Matured in a mix of sherry and bourbon barrels and bottled at cask strength. Peppery peat, warm tar, coffee grounds, machine oil, and black pepper on the nose. The palate is complex and rich, offering orange segments sprinkled with sea salt, dark chocolate, malt, and ever-present sweet peat. Nicely balanced. Lengthy in the finish, with smoky caramel. Still lots of fruited liveliness beneath the initial smoke, which develops more toward cigar box and cigar ash. The palate offers honeyed sweetness, crème brûlée, coconut cream, tropical fruits, red berries, and pepper spice. Smooth and mellow on the finish, but the flavors don’t linger long. *Ranked #2 in the Top 20 of 2024* (JM, Spring-2024)" K&L Notes: We've waited almost two decades...

This is surely going to be the one to snag from this year’s collection of exceptional Old Particulars. This beautiful Tormore is incredibly different than the young ex-bourbon barrel aged version we bottled last year. The lovely distillery now owned by the Sukinder brothers of Whisky Exchange fame is one of the most striking properties in Scotland. Its copper roofs and stark white terraces are a welcome site after many miles of unadorned wilderness. The palate is equally out there, with old-fashioned fabric Band-Aids, bladderwrack seaweed, black pepper, smoldering peat, vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak. The finish is as big as everything else, with barbecue, iodine, and asphalt. Still a classic!
