Burgundy

Welcome to one of the most historic wine regions in the world, a province of eastern France that is famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of other grapes are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) This is complicated and exciting territory - the hallowed ground where more than a few bonafide wine geeks end up. View our selection...

Louis Bouillot Cremant de Bourgogne "Perle d'Aurore" Brut Rosé Top Pick!
Louis Bouillot Cremant de Bourgogne "Perle d'Aurore" Brut Rosé

Wine & Spirits: "Gentle strawberry fruit fills this soft rosé, its zesty finish keeping it clean. A fine aperitif." (4/2014) Wine Enthusiast: "Full, ripe wine, layered with fruits and a dry, more mineral core. The wine has good depth of flavor, strawberries, red currants and a citrus cut that keeps the wine fresh at the end." (11/2013) K&L Notes: This delightful sparkling rosé wine comes from Burgundy. It is made of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Gamay Noir. The charming eye of the swan color comes from the addition of Pinot Noir to the wine when the lees are disgorged, following the traditional fermentation in... Read More »

2013 Domaine Paul Pernot Bourgogne Chardonnay Top Pick!
2013 Domaine Paul Pernot Bourgogne Chardonnay

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "(from Puligny vines on the Meursault border – vinified in stainless steel). This too is extremely fresh though with a bit more aromatic breadth to the floral, citrus, pear and apple-scented nose. The middle weight flavors possess an attractive texture and solid concentration before terminating in a balanced and lingering finish. I would suggest holding this excellent effort for 2 to 3 years though it could be approached young. Recommended." (6/2015)

2013 Meurgey-Croses Mâcon-Uchizy

Pierre Meurgey, formerly the Managing Director at Maison Champy, with whom we have been working for 20 years, is now working on his own. His mother's family hails from the Mâcon, so he has particularly good connectoins with some terrific growers in this part of Burgundy. The name comes from his name, and that of his mother's family, in the time-honored Burgundian tradtion. This Chardonnay is fermented and aged only in tank to emphasize the freshness and minerality of this wine, sourced from the village of Uchizy in the northern part of Mâcon. (Keith... Read More »

2012 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey "Clos Rond" Top Pick!
2012 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey "Clos Rond"

The Mercurey Clos Rond comes from a single vineyard in Mercurey. The name means "the walled vineyard in that brambly area," derived from the local word "Ronde" instead of the more usual French "Ronce," meaning brambles. In a land where ownership is usually splintered, this vineyard is a rare case where the entire vineyard is under one owner, Domaine Faiveley. It lies on a gentle slope, with rich red-brown soil, a fairly high clay content and buried limestone beneath. The result is a Pinot Noir displaying rich, round fruit, both red and black, and just a ... Read More »

2013 Domaine Desertaux-Ferrand Bourgogne Rouge

Located in the heart of the vineyards of Burgundy, on the border of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, this estate was established in 1899 by Amable Désertaux. The area was then about three hectares. It was not until the arrival of Bernard and Janine Désertaux that it grew to 12 ha. The installation of their children, Christine and Vincent in 1995 and 2000, has resulted in some very fine wines, and as they still fly under the radar, these are very affordable, too! Lots of wine for an extremely modest sum.

Discover a delicious Chardonnay from one of our favorite direct-import producers in Burgundy. Maison Jacques Bavard is a tiny negociant producer in Puligny Montrachet. He comes from a long line of wine-growers, and is dedicated to working with organic and biodynamic growers. This wine is long and concentrated, and comes from a vineyard just over the hill from Meursault Meix Chavaux. It has both life and weight on the palate. Terrific! Get this value while you can, because the Bavard wines won't last long in stock. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

2013 Thierry & Pascale Matrot Bourgogne Blanc

Jancis Robinson: "Intense primary lemon aroma and flavour, with enough lees character to add the texture that softens the whole into harmony. Tight and bright and straightforward, as you might expect for a simple Bourgogne Chardonnay." (1/2015) K&L Notes: As written in SF Gate: "Chardonnay-wise, the Matrots dabble in rarefied ground - the Burgundy commune of Meursault. That village is also the source for their Bourgogne Blanc, from 30+-year-old vines and fermented with indigenous yeast. 2011 Jacques Bavard Monthelie Rouge

This exciting Pinot Noir comes from the picturesque village of Monthelie, located next to the more famous village of Volnay. It is from a tiny negociant in Puligny-Montrachet named Jacques Bavard. He comes from a long line of wine-growers, and is dedicated to working with organic and biodynamic growers. This comes from 30-year-old vines, and underwent a long cold soak to extract more aromatic elements. It is bigger and richer than the Auxey-Duresses on the palate, with lovely cherry fruit and quite a bit of structure to match it. It's aromatically charmi... Read More »

Wine & Spirits: "Lively and fresh, this flavorful sparkling wine is packed with ripe lemon and quince fruit. Its mousse is a bit foamy, its aroma a bit grassy. Balanced for the richness of a lobster roll." (10/2011) K&L Notes: From Chardonnay grown in the Maconnais region of southern Burgundy, this lovely sparkling wine is fresh and floral with apple and pear notes, lots of tiny bubbles and a crisp finish. 2012 Olivier Leflaive St-Aubin 1er Cru "Charmois" Top Pick!
2012 Olivier Leflaive St-Aubin 1er Cru "Charmois"

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 St. Aubin 1er Cru Charmois is 100% negoce fruit and is raised in 15% new oak. It has a very light bouquet that needs more fruit expression. The palate has a light, apple entry with slightly shrill acidity at the moment. It is very citric in the mouth with bitter lemon on the terse finish" (12/2013) K&L Notes: The Saint Aubin les Charmois is a bit of a lesser-known gem. 2012 Château de la Charrière Santenay Blanc 1er Cru "Beauregard" Domaine Yves Girardin (Previously $33)

This a new acquisition of one of the family's historic vineyards in Santenay from his brother Vincent who left the wine business to farm cereal grains west of Paris. It shows a very pretty thread of minerality running through it, which comes from the relatively shallow topsoil of this site, located above the more well-known Santenay Gravières. This has that combination of energy, focus and a relatively open texture on the palate that makes it very easy to like. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 03/2014)

This should drink well young." (4/2014) K&L Notes: Lovely cherry fruit. This is done in 15% new oak. (5/2015) K&L Notes: Etienne Delarche, son of Philippe who passed away in 2008, now runs this family owned estate of 9 hectares in the villages of Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. Leased from the proprietor of the Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Recorded in Burgundy in the 1700s, Aligoté was once widely planted, but almost died out in the early 20th century after the 19th century phylloxera epidemic wiped out most of the vineyards. It is undergoing a renaissance in the 21st century, however; Aubert DeVillaine, proprietor of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti believes so fervently in this grape that he fought for—and won—an all-Aligoté appellation in Bouzeron.
