2012 Alheit Vineyards "Cartology" Chenin Blanc Western Cape
Review Date: 2-2-2014

Super interesting wine. A young couple dedicated to white wine pushing the boundaries of minimal intervention wine making. Their philosophy is proudly 99% vineyard, 1% winemaking! This is sourced from very old Chenin Blanc and Semillon vines in the remote Western Cape and Franschhoek Valley. The wine is a pure reflection of the incredible old dry farmed vineyards from which the fruit is sourced. Tightly focused, mineral infused stone fruit nectar with added weight and texture from the Semillon component. Complex and intriguing wine that unfolds layer upon layer. A very limited production of only 20 barrels.

2013 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Riesling "M" Marlborough New Zealand

It sounds strange but this wine works in the way that the perfect sweet and sour pairings do. It has a beautiful focused sweetness and a fantastic tangy acidity to match. An incredible floral exotic nose, fresh citrus fruit, slatey mineral tones and just magnificent driving acidity. I love my Rieslings with a touch of sweetness and this weighing in at 30g/l RS and 9.5% alc is just delicious!

2012 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Riesling "D" Marlborough New Zealand

TWR is known across NZ for their amazing aromatic wines. This is their "D" bottling meaning "Dry". The wines is so fresh and zesty. Fresh lime, citrus blossom, tangerine. The acidity is racy but not austere. They work very hard to work with the lees contact to give the wine a lovely texture and elegance on the palate. This for me is lovely dry Riesling without being too lean and harsh.

Wildly aromatic with an alluring combination of pure crushed dark fruit, Asian spice and a wonderfully true Pinot Noir gamey, earthy undercurrent. A lovely polished wine showing the incredible dedication to purity and precision that Jason and Anna employ. A 300 case production of their finest hand selected fruit. An exceptional value in the world of classy Pinot Noir. Without our Direct Import relationship this is $50 wine for sure.

2012 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Chardonnay Marlborough New Zealand

Great chard from TWR. Lovely balance of richness and restraint. Very exotic aromatics of ripe stone fruits and some floral nuances. The wine was a tiny production in 2012 totaling just 100cs! The flavor concentration from the old Mendoza clone vines really shows and is perfectly framed by the spicy oak and savory lees components. A very complete Chardonnay.

2010 Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah Hawkes Bay
Review Date: 2-2-2014

A spectacularly exotic Syrah from Te Mata. This wine has endless silky dark fruit, Asian spice and a touch of bitter-sweet chocolate. There is just a hint of old school earthy quality here to stop the ripe qualities taking over. A real classic wine that truly deserves it's reputation as one of the most iconic bottles in NZ.

2010 Denbies Estate "Cubitt Reserve" Surrey, England
Review Date: 2-2-2014

A rich, creamy texture and lots of toasty richness. A round, soft mouth feel and fine bubbles with but with lots of underlying minerality and fresh acidity. This bottling shows why Denbies Estate is one of the big players in English sparkling wine. They have a great south facing chalky site that allows them to bring big, powerful Pinot Noir based wines to the table like few others in England can achieve. This is a crowd pleaser.

2008 Gusbourne Estate Brut Reserve, Kent, England

A savory wine with intense lees character from the extended ageing on the yeast. Toasty, nutty flavors dominate but the wine also has a bright core of crunchy pear and zesty citrus acidity. A wine showing a lovely element of development and elegance from its time in bottle. This is very hard to pick from great Champagne and has beaten many such Champagnes in blind tastings internationally (Bollinger for one on the BBC’s “12 Drinks of Christmas”) I can definitely see why!

2011 Wiston Estate "South Downs Brut Rosé" West Sussex, England

Another standout wine from Wiston Estate. This magnificent rose is all about purity and elegance. A fresh nose of rose petals and spice with hints of Strawberry carries through on to the wonderfully soft, fine textured palate with Alpine Strawberries and fresh cream on brioche. A perfect expression of Rose for me. Lovely focus and precision with a softness and elegance that is very hard to achieve. Top notch stuff. 8g/l dosage. If it matters to you, (and sometimes with “Champagne” it does) these guys also got the packaging right, a very stylish and eye catching bottle, enough to land them on the Forbes' list for coolest wine labels of 2013!

2010 Wiston Estate "South Downs Cuvée Brut" West Sussex, England

A standout in English Sparkling. These guys are very serious about making world-class sparkling wines. An incredible wine with powerful, chalky minerality and very focused, linear intensity. A low 4g/l dosage and high acidity means this is more in the Extra Brut camp for those that like very crisp dry Champagnes. The wine has rich flavor concentration that zips across the palate. I think this is quite reminiscent of Krug with its barrel-fermented qualities showing through adding another layer of textural quality and toasty flavors. A unique expression of English sparkling from perhaps the most focused producer that we came across. If it matters to you, (and sometimes with “Champagne” it does) these guys also got the packaging right, a very stylish and eye catching bottle, enough to land them on the Forbes list for coolest wine labels of 2013!

2011 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Syrah Marlborough
Review Date: 12-10-2013
Unbelievably good Syrah. Marlborough is definitely a very marginal place to grow Syrah. Most people wouldn't bother with it as it's way to late ripening for a place as cool as this. However, when you just happen to have some amazing old vines in the heart of Renwick and you are passionate about making interesting wines that speak of terroir, purity and elegance then you might just go the extra mile to make a wine like this!

2012 Banshee Sonoma County Pinot Noir

Another really solid effort from Banshee. A juicy, richer style of Pinot Noir that still has good lift and balance. Dark cherry, vanilla, clove and baking spice. Soft and supple with good mid-palate weight and texture. Seriously crowd friendly Pinot for holiday parties etc. Very good value for Pinot of this quality in the $20ish price point. Easy to drink, easy to love!

2010 d'Arenberg "High Trellis" Cabernet Sauvignon McLaren Vale South Australia
Review Date: 11-30-2013

Seriously good Cab for a tiny price! From very old vines in McLaren Vale, this wine has great power and concentration with lush dark fruits, blackcurrant, cassis, crushed mint, sweet tobacco and new leather. Med-full bodied with a nice grip to the tannin supporting the dense fruit. As with all of Chester's wines it has a lovely earthy component and vibrant acidity that sets it apart from pretty much all other challengers in this price point by adding an additional layer of complexity and intrigue. A stunning hearty red as we head into the depths of winter. A very crowd pleasing style of Cabernet at a pocket book pleasing price!
