2009 Casanova di Neri "Tenuta Nuova" Brunello di Montalcino
Review Date: 3-3-2015

2009 produces wines that were a little rounder and fuller and have a nearer term drinking window, they actually taste really good now! The Tenuta Nuova is from a vineyard in the southwestern portion of Montalcino and that extra richness is very apparent in this wine. Waves of smoky plum, with hints of spice, leather and hints of vanilla. Excellent wine that has superb pedigree and a richness that is perfect for drinking now.

A wonderful everyday Sangiovese from coastal Tuscany that is loaded with up front fruit but still has enough finish to make it taste like something far more expensive than it is. Lots of plumy fruit with hints of leather. Longtime staff favorite!

From the southern slope of Montalcino this wineís nose is full of wild earth, spice, wild flowers and hints of leather. While in the mouth this wine has a bold, determined palate presence showing the richness of its location yet never feeling plump, always focused, directional yet lustrous, dense and layered flows of wild cherry, stone, smoke, leather, smoked meats and wild flowers. The powerful yet supple body forges a long and complete finish where freshly cut leather, herbs, hints of smoke and wild cherry continue on and on.

The nose is bright and focused, full of quince, and on the palate an incredible core of acid and minerality, it feels like crushed quartz. Yet with all of this sizzling acidity, minerality and salinity the wine is full bodied, sees no oak but is so texturally dazzling you wonít believe it. Layers of flavors, waves of supple texture and an endless finish make this wine something extraordinary. This wine will age well for the next decade, stock up now.

The bold nose shows so much wild cherry, sweet earth, dried flowers coupled with a fuller plumier breadth. On the palate the wine has deep, saturated flavors of spiced plum, along with a pool of savory, porcini, dried meat and leather flavors. The wine is full of power, incredible depth and its richly textured palate presence is awesome. The finish is powerful, full and shows incredible length and layer after layer of spice, fruit, herbs, leather and earth. A truly spectacular wine.

The nose is full of dried cherries, leather and spice that flow from the glass, yet this nose is not full lustrous sweet fruit it is full of facets, the aromas are layered and gently peel back to expose the next one as they brush past our nose. On the palate the wine shows very fine grain tannin, more layers of wild cherry, leather, cinnamon with hints of brine. The finish shows more wild cherry, spice and the long, elegant lines of tannin, that join into one voice in the finish.

The nose is full of dark chocolate, with black pepper, and wild cherry and while seeming to be wildly divergent flavors the amalgamation is extraordinary. On the palate the wineís density steps out, it is all absorbing, powerful, potent yet doesnít drag the wine down itís buoyant and allows the fleshy presence to warm you. The wine turns from the cacophony of flavor into the nose into a consistent reminder of salty and savory flavors. Sage, Rosemary, porcini flavors join the wild cherry and black pepper, with hints of iron to give a tremendously complex flavor array. The wine finishes with a burst of flavor, density and slight tannic grip.

The nose is full of spice, vanilla, cedar and bits of cherry compote. On the palate the supple, polished feel pulls the cherry and spice together and they blossom in a supple, enticing and plump texture that is enticing, alluring and makes you want to taste again. Some squeaky tannins begin to emerge in the finish where the fruit and spice come together in a long, powerful finish.

A very intense nose that seems more like a pot roast cooking, savory, earthy, bay leaves, porcini and root vegetables. On the palate the wineís braised meat flavors continue but are captured by the texture, this wine becomes tactile, less flavor driven yet is wildly interesting, and indescribable layers of consistency, grain, fineness and feel infuse the wine with a vibrant almost tactile flavor. The flavors are there, that same batch from the nose but hints of spiced cherry emerge in the long, vibrant albeit slightly grippy finish.

The nose is narrow, tightly wound, oyster shell, crushed brick and leather. On the palate the wine shows long, elegant lines that highlight the wines tannic structure where parts of the brick, leather and oyster shell aromatics turn into flavors. A leaner, more restrained character with hints of the salty, savory vintage character. The finish is long and dusty, leathery in line with this wineís classic style.

2010 Silvio Nardi "Manachiara" Brunello di Montalcino Pre-Arrival

The nose is a slowly evolving blend of dried fruits, meat, sage, wild flowers and leather that gently flows from the glass. On the palate the wine is a powerfully fleshy, dense wine where plum becomes the more dominant flavor that is gradually accented by freshly cut leather. However the overtly impressive character of this wine is its powerful, dense and smooth texture. This tactile demand on your attention is impossible to overlook, dense, concentrated yet never seems heavy, clumsy or out of balance. Incredibly supple, dark combination of flavors add a long, smooth and incredible finish.

The nose is a very complex compote of black fruit, more so than most anything Iíve had from this vintage, and while it is rather saturated, rich and dense it is fresh and lively. The wine has good structure both tannin and acid that balance each other allowing a smoky, spicy cola like flavor to well up from the depths of this wine to mix with the blackberry jam flavors. Long, balanced and full of flavor.

Dried flowers lead the nose into an ethereal arena where dark, wild cherry, cedar and leather all come together in an extraordinary thrust. On the palate the wine is multi-faceted and seemingly at every angle another layer of flavor, this time smoky, the next time cedar, then wild cherry all dancing across your palate. The finish is taught, a bit of tannic grip drags the flavors and textures together and pulling them along to a long, intriguing and texturally exciting finish.

The nose is warm, inviting, a delicate flow of fraises des bois is backfilled with a salty, savory plum that slowly exits the glass. On the palate the wine is so smooth, supple with a luxurious feel to it, however it doesnít feel dense, just long and smooth. The flavors pick up with more of the savory; plumy character this time accented with hints of freshly cut leather. The finish builds, fine grain tannins emerge and close the wine with a twist of structure and long savory finish.
