2013 Spellbound California Chardonnay

SKU #1177290 Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2013 Chardonnay shows tropical fruit, especially tangerines, mangoes and pineapples. It has fresh acidity, not much evidence of wood, but good cleanliness, freshness and a medium-bodied, nice fruity mouthfeel. Drink it over the next several years. These are excellent wines once again as this winery has appeared frequently in these Best Buy pages (RP) Inner quote mark (8/2015)

K&L Notes

From winemaker Rob Mondavi, Jr, the 2013 Spellbound Chardonnay displays a lively and lush tropical profile of pineapple, guava, and kiwi fruit. To contribute the rich complexity of vanilla and crème brûlée, 90% of the wine was fermented in oak barrels, with the remaining 10% fermented in stainless steel to maintain a bracing vein of freshness and acid.

Spellbound is classic California: a lively oak and butter bomb. This value-driven chardonnay shows apples on the nose with a hint of more tropical fruit, and the creamy palate is surprisingly balanced for something so lush. Much as I wanted to resist writing this obvious cliché, you will fall under the heavy-handed spell of Rob Mondavi, Jr,. – fans of La Crema and Rombauer will never want to wake up!

Can’t afford the pricier Rombauer but still want to be treated to a delicious, sun-baked apple-blessed, tropical, toasty and vanilla-imbued wine? Go for the Spellbound my friends, you will find plenty here to enjoy, and it really does the trick, offering plenty of rich wine pleasure for far less than you’d expect to pay. And if you happen to live in California, be sure to stock a few cases away, just in case we run out of, gulp, water....

The spellbound chardonnay shows incredible depth and balance at a fantastic value. The nose is full of pears, baked apples, and just a hint of lees and toasty notes. The palate provides incredible balance between acid and a richness while having notes of white peach, pear and vanilla.

Robert Mondavi Jr. hits it out of the ballpark again with the 2013 vintage of Spellbound Chardonnay. I have to say, this is the richest, creamiest, toastiest vintage of this wine I've tasted! You really can not beat the value here. Lots of buttered popcorn, creme brulee, caramel-dipped apple, and freshly buttered toast. This is A LOT of wine for the price! If you're a Cali-Chard fan, this is one not to miss!
