1999 Shafer Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Continues the Shafer tradition of richly fruity Cabs, with near-perfect tannins and just-right oak, and an elegant suppleness that’s delicious and distinctive in youth, but ageworthy. The fine vintage has made the wine extra-complex and balanced. Over the years, many wineries have arisen, but few have a better track record than Shafer.
A masterful presentation of toasty, mocha-scented oak, accompanied by exotic wood spices, it also delivers plenty of ripe, rich, complex fruit, with concentrated layers of currant, mocha, coffee, plum and black cherry. Firmly tannic, a step up in quality for this bottling, making it more in the style of the Hillside Select.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The elegant, rich 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. It offers outstanding sweet black currant fruit intermixed with tobacco leaf, licorice, and minerals. The wine is pure, ripe, medium to full-bodied, and well-balanced. It is a gorgeous 1999 to enjoy now and over the next 10-15 years. (RP)
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Medium ruby. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and tobacco, with grapey and leafy nuances. Sweeter and lusher than the '99 Merlot, with layered flavors of currant, black cherry and plum. Harmonious acids give the wine excellent definition. Finishes with substantial but sweet tannins. This has turned out very well. (ST)
