1998 Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Ripe blueberry and plum flavors are supple and pleasing, tender and fleshy, yet this shows its age on the finish, where gunmetal and flint are evident.--1998 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now. 488 cases made.
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
A supple, balanced, harmonious style, with medium-weight grapey currant, black cherry and blackberry flavors that pick up a nice earthy touch on the finish.
It’s “a wine that screams California,” noted one reviewer, meaning that the Golden State’s textbook caramel-jammy blackberry-toast profile is in full effect here. Medium-full in the mouth, with a little heat. It closes with bitter coffee and a little char. Would have been excellent if it had a little more richness.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon's dense ruby color is followed by moderately intense aromas of underbrush, black currants, and oak...
Winemaker's Notes: The nose is big and intense with ripe Cabernet fruit and a complement of oak. The complex aroma has blackberry, black cherry, chocolate, vanilla bean, plum, and black currant. The velvety entry has vanilla and oak with soft, seductive tannins and mouth-coating density. The wine has long aging potential and should be decanted if served before 2002.
