1999 Turley "Hayne" Napa Valley Zinfandel
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Year in and year out one of Turley's superstars is the Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard. The 1999 (560 cases, 16.8% alcohol) is a tour de force in Zinfandel winemaking. The alcohol is totally concealed behind a wealth of glycerin, fruit, layered extraction, and a rich, plush texture. The wine possesses an opaque purple color, marvelous purity, and a minerality that frames its extravagant blackberry, cherry, and currant-dominated richness. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Bright deep ruby. Vibrant but reticent nose hints at raspberry syrup. Fat, lush and sweet, with explosively spicy flavors of black cherry, cassis and bitter chocolate. This has wonderful creamy sweetness at its core. Finishes with chewy tannins and great persistence. (ST)
Turley Wine Cellars makes thirty-four wines, the vast majority of which are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. By focusing on old vine vineyards in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture. All of the vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or are in the process of being certified, and they use all natural yeasts in the fermentations.
