 A smoking good 2015 that readers should snatch up is the 2015 Cotes du Ventoux Cuvee des Terrasses, which is 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah that’s aged in a combination of two- to four-year-old barrels and foudres. Medium to full-bodied, polished, silky and with no hard edges, it has classic Southern Rhone notes of Provencal spices, garrigue, licorice and ripe black raspberries. One of the great producers of Ventoux, Chateau Pesquie has been under the watchful eye of consumers and critics alike with their forward drinking yet complex wines. Sitting in the shadow of Mt. Ventoux, the soils of Pesquie are rich in limestone and reside at higher elevations offering a cooler almost continental climate giving Pesquie its distinctive qualities. The Terrasses is the flagship wine and always over delivers with its blend of near equal parts Grenache and Syrah. Elevage is straight forward with Grenache aging in stainless steel and Syrah in neutral French oak barrels. This is all to preserve the classic nature of the fruit. As Jeb Dunnuck writes, "...it's a crazy good value." We agree!

Whenever a new lot of the perilously delicious Chateau Pesquie appears on the wine receiving dock I start to unconsciously salivate.... ok, an exaggeration, but for all the ripe reasons this mouthwatering Rhone has been one of the best unkept secrets in our stores for years. Cultivated on limestone and clay soils beneath the yawning shadows of Mont Ventoux (celebrated as perhaps the most unforgiving, do-or-die climb in the Tour de France), this all-organic red brings out the best of both Grenache and Syrah, with captive notes of black cherry, raspberries, potpourri, and anise, impeccably balanced with poised acidity and suave tannin. Bring a few bottles home tonight, and serve with a thick juicy grass-fed hamburger!

Pesquie is so good at what they do, their wines seem to transcend vintage. The Terrasses in particular always delivers copious fruit with an elegant mouthfeel and supple tannins and continues to be a wine that consistently over-delivers for the money. Pesquie is in the heart of Ventoux at higher elevation protected from the extremes of the Mistral winds so the weather stays consistent. In a great vintage like 2015, all things come together harmoniously to produce one of their best wines in quite some time. (And that is saying something as both the '13 and '14 were pure pleasure in a glass.)

If I were to choose a new weeknight bottle of red wine, I'd pick up a bottle of the 2015 Pesquie. It has aromas of what I like to describe as a bouquet of red fruit and hints of baking spice with lots of big dark fruit balanced out with medium tannins on the palate. I feel this would hold up to any pasta or red sauced dish or just perfect on its own while binge watching my favorite Hulu show.

Pesquie is one of those year-in-year out values from the Southern Rhone that never fails to disappoint. I’m really happy to report that the 2015 does a whole lot more than that. There’s plenty of gamey, savory notes on the nose with a touch of smokey, and round, dark fruits. The palate follows up with rich, dense blackberry and black cherry notes with that characteristic snap of acid that Pesquie always has, really popping the fruit and invigorating the palate.Dark and juicy, yet smooth, polished and totally accessible, I can really see the strength of the vintage in depth and concentration of the fruit here. A great buy.
