2016 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1330647 94-97 points Jeb Dunnuck

Moving to the reds, I was able to taste all of the components of the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape and this will unquestionably be another terrific vintage from this estate. All of the samples had inky, purple colors, classic aromatics, good acidity and freshness, and balanced profiles. The Mourvèdre, in particular, was beautiful. (JebDunnuck.com) (10/2017)

No surprise, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape takes the quality of the Coudoulet and ratchets it up a notch (or two!). I tasted the preliminary blend from foudre and was blown away by its potential. At 35% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault and 10% other permitted varieties, it shows amazing purity in its scents of dark fruit and licorice, richness and weight without any excess of alcohol and a finish that goes on and on. According to Marc Perrin, '2016 has this extra balance that really makes it unique.' But I would point out that the 2015s at this historic property are also top notch. The family continues to espouse the use of foudres for most of their wines, feeling, says Marc, 'We have high levels of tannins already.' If you count all of the holdings outside Châteauneuf, the family owns probably the single largest vineyard estate in the Southern Rhône, with 350 hectares being farmed organically. Those other estates appear under the Famille Perrin heading. (JC) (10/2017)

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
