2015 Yves Duport "Origin'L Reserve" Bugey Brut

SKU #1325194

Yves Duport is a fourth generation winemaker based in the town of Groslee, one of the villages located in the not-so-well-known appellation of Bugey. Bugey lies to the west of Savoie, France's alpine region, of which it shares many similarities. The region is also quite close to Burgundy and Beaujolais, so many of their influences are felt as well. The classic grape varieties from both regions are planted throughout Bugey including Chardonnay, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Altesse and Mondeuse. The region itself is most famous for its Bugey-Cerdon, a slightly sweet but delightfully tangy sparkling wine. This is NOT that wine. Alongside dry wine production and Bugey-Cerdon, there is a great culture of dry sparkling wine production throughout the region and Yves Duport sits right at the top of the heap. All his sparkling wines are made in the Champagne method and the "Origin'L Reserve" is a recently disgorged version of his most popular bubbly. The wine is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Aligoté coming from Yves' certified organic vineyards which are planted on primarily limestone soils. It spent almost three years on the lees. Not quite Champagne but real close, the wine has a wonderful mousse with a decisive mid-palate. Golden apples and Anjou pears, a touch of ginger and some nutmeggy spices emerge on the nose. When I'm looking to up my game from a basic sparkler but still don't want to spend Champagne money, this is my go-to wine. (Keith Mabry, French Regional Buyer)

In my opinion, the best cremant at K&L hands-down. Tons of interesting notes on the nose: wild apple, almond blossoms, and a touch of lemon zest. But on the palate, this is all baked pear. With vigorous bubbles and dialed-in tartness, the Origin Reserve is light, crisp and fresh. This is what you want in your glass on a warm afternoon.

If you are a fan of Old World bubbly, this should definitely be in your fridge. It comes from Bugey, which is a cool wine growing area in Eastern France with viticultural origins predating the Romans. Yves Duport runs this small operation with his family, and makes fantastic wines. The “Origin’L Reserve” has zesty minerality with flavors of stone fruit and baked apples, and a touch of toast from 12 months on the lees. It’s very clean, crisp and refreshing. For now, Bugey doesn’t quite command the prices other famous bubbly regions do, making it a killer value.

The sparkling wines I've tasted continue to impress my palate and this brut sparkling from Yves Duport is no different. The fruit and floral aromatics are inviting with well-balanced acidity and fruit notes. A great bottle of bubbly for any night!
