2013 Domaine Dugois Savagnin Arbois Blanc (Sous Voile)

SKU #1325181 92 points Wine Enthusiast

This wine is a great example of a specialty of the Jura: aging wines under a layer of natural yeast. That gives a wine that's at once nutty and fruity, with a yeasty, bready character, dried fruit notes and intense acidity. Drink now and until 2021. *Cellar Selection* (RV) (12/2017)

K&L Notes

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyard and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. Daniel and his wife Monique have continued to work on the quality of their wines and their efforts have since been recognized in many wine contests and guidebook reviews. In 2003, their son Philippe returned to the estate to lend a hand in the winemaking and in 2013 he took charge of the vineyard. The Savagnin is made in the classic style aged under a layer of yeast creating a "baby Vin Jaune."

A stellar example of this style of Jura white and a bargain to boot. This is rich, nutty and leesy with flavors of waxy stone fruit and hints of clarified butter. The sherry-like finish has a saline, mineral tang that begs for another sip.

I am still bowled over from tasting this wine today. An impressive nose of white stone fruits, fino sherry, almonds and rhubarb. An interesting blend of oxidation, laser acidity and underlying, delicate fruit. One of the most pleasurable white wines that I have had in months.

The Savagnin grape undoubtedly reaches its apotheosis in the beautiful Jura region of Arbois, and this enthralling version exhibits lively oxidative aromas and provocative flavors of green walnut, hazelnut, stone fruit and minerals, imbued with a spine of crisp acidity. Pair tonight with a spicy chicken curry or Moroccan dish for an exotic, soul-satisfying dinner.
