2015 Raul Perez "Ultreia St-Jacques" Mencía Bierzo

SKU #1322351 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2015 Ultreia St Jacques is the entry-level red for the Ultreia range and is amazingly good for the price. Produced from old vines, this is a serious wine, with juicy fruit, a fine palate and good freshness for the conditions of the year. They have included new vineyards that they have been working for the last four or five years, so they are able to bottle a little bit more wine. This is a great value. 24,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2017. Raúl Pérez should need no introduction by now. With a clear focus on terroir, the wines are often named after the places or vineyards where the grapes come from, and the range is very wide. He has changed U.S. importer, and the prices in the states have seen a significant decrease. I tasted mostly 2014s—a truly impressive year for Pérez. (8/2017)

#51 on the 2017 WS Top 100! Smoke, forest floor and mineral notes mingle in this savory red. Lively acidity and light, firm tannins give grip to the polished texture. Cherry and floral accents sing through the finish. Energetic. Drink now through 2023. (9/2017)

K&L Notes

#51 on the 2017 WS Top 100! Raul Perez is not only a Spanish wine consultant to some of the most exciting projects and emergent terroirs of the past 15 or so years, he also makes plenty of his own wines, including this one in his home base of Valtuille (Bierzo). This is a fantastic example of the savory, mineral and bright, almost Syrah like fruit that Mencia is capable of producing when in the best of hands. Highliy recommended.

This wine was quite a delight. I was looking for something to pair with braised oxtails, and this was a perfect option. A medium-bodied wine with great acidity to stand up to the unctuous nature of the meat. The fruit was bright with juicy red apples, red fruit and toasted black peppercorns.
