2015 Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique "Les Hesperides" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1322113 96 points Jeb Dunnuck

Like the 2016, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hesperides is an even split of Grenache and Mourvèdre, from the les Bedines lieu-dit (100% sandy soils), that was completely destemmed and brought up mostly in stainless steel, with 20% in demi-muids. It’s a brilliant wine that offers lots of meaty, spice, licorice nuances, tons of blackberry and black raspberry fruit, full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and a blockbuster finish. It’s up with the crème de la crème of the vintage and will keep for two decades. (JebDunnuck.com) (10/2017)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

All of the special cuvées from this estate are stellar in 2015. The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape les Hesperides is 50% Grenache and 50% Mourvèdre, from the sand and safre soils of the Les Bedines lieu-dit. With 20% of the wine aged in demi-muids, you may be able to detect some subtle hints of vanilla and baking spices, but what's more remarkable is the combination of nectarine and plum fruit, rich, velvety tannins and the long, layered, chocolaty finish that shows no sign of alcoholic heat. Youthful purple. Powerful, spice-accented dark fruit liqueur aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied lavender, cola and cracked pepper. Concentrated yet lively and focused, offering plush blackberry, cherry and spicecake flavors and a smoky quality that builds on the back half. Shows excellent power and breadth on the finish, which is framed by velvety, harmonious tannins that fold steadily into the juicy, ripe fruit. (JR) (3/2017)

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
