As a wine professional, I'm always thrilled to taste wines from lesser-known regions and lesser-known varietals. This lovely Marselan is a great example of a phenomenal and unusual wine from an unexpected quarter. Marselan is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. The combination is quite dynamic. The color is a deep, intense purple with gorgeous aromas of cassis and plum. On the palate it is full bodied with softer tannin than a Cabernet, and round fruit, licorice, cassis and mocha spice.

Marselan you ask? Marselan is a red French wine grape variety that is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. It was first bred in 1961 by Paul Truel near the French town of Marseillan. ( I found this on Wiki) Rich lush dark fruited with pronounced flavors of cocoa powder and coffee.

This is perhaps only the second time that I have tried Marselan. It is very deep and dark in color, with a deep boysenberry and blackberry nose. Lush, rich, and viscous on the palate. There are hints of tannin and cola, to liven things up a bit. One of the best wines that I have tasted in the past few weeks.
