 San Andreas is the wine that represents the entire Hirsch estate, from the ocean-influenced west ridge to the sun-warmed east ridge; in 2014, it draws from 30 of the vineyard’s 61 farming blocks. It has an undeniable sense of place, capturing coastal breezes and thin sedimentary ridgetop soils in the tight weave of its tannins - the fruit caught halfway between cherry and stone, cool and shady, yet hinting at vibrant rays of sunshine. You can access its complex floral spice now, but it’s still mostly structure, nowhere near maturity. Floral, foggy and mineral, it’s a wine you’ll want to taste in another decade.  (10/2017)

 The 2014 Pinot Noir San Andreas Fault draws on fruit across the entire ranch. Silky and aromatic, with understated depth, the 2014 will give readers a good idea of the personality of both the vintage and this site. Bright red stone fruit and delicate yet incisive tannins give the wine its shape and overall feel. This is a relatively easygoing style for Hirsch. (AG)  (3/2017)

Winemaker's Notes: "Lying adjacent to the San Andreas Fault on the extreme western Sonoma Coast, Hirsch Vineyards is comprised of 72 acres, divided into 67 individual farming blocks. The resulting degree of fragmentation is unmatched even by the famously subdivided vineyards of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Due to the site’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the San Andreas Fault, the vineyard has a fearsome diversity of soils, aspects, elevations and microclimates. This complexity defines our farming and winemaking practices: each block was individually developed and is now farmed, harvested and vinified separately. The San Andreas Fault is Hirsch Vineyards’ signature pinot noir and is crafted to represent the entirety of this multifaceted vineyard. The 2014 San Andreas Fault has fruit from 32 distinct farming blocks, more than any other wine made from the Hirsch Vineyard. It is the flagship wine from Hirsch, and the wine that represents the summation of our complex vineyard."

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.
