We're always looking for pricing that makes great Burgundy accessible to the masses, so when we saw these discounts we were intrigued. What made us truly excited was tasting the wines: they are serious, vineyard-first, expressive, age-worthy red Burgs that show the heights of the vintage. It is for this reason their list prices are among Burgundy's elite. Aurélien Verdet isn't a household name, but a parcel like this might just put him there, and quickly. Certified Biodynamic, Verdet crafts complex and no-compromise wines from some of Côte-de-Nuits finest sites. These are must-try wines for Burg enthusiasts and those looking to discover the region's true gems. Aurélien Verdet owns this outstanding vineyard, located on the south-facing slope behind the charming village of Arcenant, five miles west of Nuits-St-Georges. Planted in the 1970s, this vineyard’s soils consist of limestone and clay, with bands of rock about a foot below the surface that restrict vigor and ensure high quality. Le Prieuré Pinot Noir is reminiscent of a Nuits-St-Georges with an intensely aromatic, ripe-raspberry bouquet and concentrated palate.

This is a crowd pleasing style that is beautifully aromatic and rich in dark fruits, earth and spice. Anyone who likes a bolder style of Pinot Noir without the opulence of hot climate fruit would enjoy this.

"Whoa!" That's what I said when I tasted this wine and learned about the crazy low price. Then, I immediately bought a few bottles. Alluring, smokey with notes of black cherry, this wine is layered with notes of black tea, spice and berries. My best advice to you is this, deals like this don't come around very often so take advantage while you can. Super Recommended!

This is a truly amazing value Burgundy and I will agree with my colleagues that I have never seen Hautes Cotes de Nuits Les Prieure of such quality and finesse at this price. To me this is classic Burgundy. It starts with bright juicy red cherry, but with time in decanter it opens up with earthy and savory flavors and aromas of dark cherry and black tea, acidity softens up and texture becomes silky and smooth. It's a quiet beauty that rewards those who wait.

Easy drinking and awesomely priced, the spectator review says tart, but at this point it's totally softened up. While it may be easy to appreciate it ain't simple by any means. Splendid dark wild fruits, Marasca cherry, forest notes, and spice. Medium bodied with very easy soft tannins that keep you grabbin' the glass. Another stellar value from Verdet that's likely to have the most universal appeal in the batch.

An amazing display of aromas for such an entry-level Burgundy: flowers, violets, cranberries and currants. On the palate the flavors are powerful and concentrated without any loss of expression. I never thought I would end up writing this, but for the money, this Burgundy may be the best Pinot Noir available in our store.

As I said to my colleague Alex, when was the last time you saw a great bottle of Burgundy under twenty bucks that DIDN'T say "Bourgogne Rouge" on the label? I honestly can't remember. Burgundy isn't where I send people for great values. It's where I send customers in search of the sublime, but always with the expectation that they're going to pay for that luxury. In the case of this Verdet Cotes de Nuits, there's a whole lotta bang for your buck here. The wine has depth, layered complexity, and typicity for the appellation, all for under twenty bucks. I can't remember that last time I saw that in our Burgundy department and I certainly don't expect to see it again anytime soon.

Wine Value of the Year? Quite Possibly! Those of you who were shrewd enough to buy in on the first offering of Verdet wines would be wise again to snatch up by the case the 2014 Aurelien Verdet Hautes Cotes de Nuits "Les Prieure" Rouge. For Under $17 this is a screaming deal and easily drinks like a wine 3-4 times the price. Loaded with aromas of fresh-picked strawberries, rosemary and spice aromas the packed palate is a sensuous display of fresh berry and sappy red fruits. This is a great everyday drinking red Burgundy.

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

Burgundy

- The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Côte d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Côte de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Côte de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Côte d'Or. Also include by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.
