2008 Agusti Torelló Mata "Kripta" Cava Brut Penedes

SKU #1299752 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The current vintage of the special cuvée is the 2008 Kripta, a classical blend of the local grapes Macabeo, Xarello and Parellada aged in contact with the lees in bottle for a long time, no less than five years, during which time the bottle is closed with a cork (it's usually a crown stopper). Apparently this gives the wine a different character and is the way it was traditionally done. This is a polished Cava with yeast and brioche aromas and a soft palate with clean, developed flavors and integrated acidity. A benchmark for the Cavas with five years in contact with lees. 90 points Decanter

Now nearing a decade since the fruit was picked, this wine shows its age in its golden hue and powerful toasty aroma. The palate shows good concentration, decent weight, and a touch of elegance (from the 45% Macabeo) with an attractive grip on the finish. (RG) (6/2017)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

A bready, yeasty nose announces that this brut nature is more than ready to drink. In the mouth, it's smooth, but light on verve and bubbles. Oxidized flavors of spent yeast, bread dough and sautéed mushroom finish dry and reserved, but somewhat flat. Drink now. (MS) (4/2017)

90 points Wine Spectator

An exotic hint of passion fruit coulis is layered with pastry cream, blanched almond and elderflower notes in this creamy, elegant Cava. Bright and well-meshed, with a minerally hint of smoke on the finish. Drink now through 2020. (AN) (11/2017)

K&L Notes

Agusti Torello Mata is one of the most respected Cava producers in Spain, focusing solely on vintage-dated Cavas and wines at the Reserva level and up. "Kripta" is their tête de cuvée, a wine that spends 60 months aging on the lees and is often referred to as one of Spain's greatest Cavas (or the greatest, depending on who you are talking to!). As delicious as the wine is, it is also bottled in a very unique, elegant, proprietary bottle that is curved at the base and then placed in a gift box, making it an ideal gift for any serious fan of Spanish wine. *Please note that we cannot ship gift boxes at this time.
