2016 Argyros Estate "Atlantis" White Cyclades

SKU #1298776 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Atlantis is the winery's blend, mostly Assyrtiko, with about 5% each of Aidani and Athiri. It is easy to overlook some of the terrific blends on the island, which the wineries often position at a lower price level. Some of them have become rather solid in their own right these days. As blends, with Athiri and Aidani, they are going to be a bit lighter styled and usually will not age as well, but they also are typically more fragrant and perkier. This is a very respectable follow-up to the lovely 2015 last year, with a fruitier nuance than the regular Assyrtiko has, but there's some tension on the finish and fine solidity in the mid-palate as well. This can hold a few years, but don't hesitate to drink it young. It also may not last at peak as long as some of the bigger boys, but it is certainly worth leaning up on it for the moment. K&L Notes

From Santorini, labeled within the larger Cyclades appellation, this is a stainless steel fermented, fresh style of Greek wine made from a blend based on Assyrtiko, with dashes of Athiri and Aidani. Yiannis Argyros is a winelover who works very hard to obtain high quality grapes in order to make superior quality wines. And there are many professionals in the Greek wine market who think of Yiannis Argyros as the best Greek winemaker in dry white wines and dessert wines. His efforts to produce high quality wines have been acknowledged worldwide, as indicated by the award by Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of 100 best wineries in the world for 2005 and 2006. The Atlantis white is a crystal-clear yellow color, with a distinctive flavor with citrus overtones. The relatively high acidity of Assyrtiko gives it a crisp freshness, while the vineyard's extremely low yield lends body, structure and substance.

Greece

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
