2012 Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce La Casilla "Estrecha" Manchuela (Previously $25)

SKU #1289167

Produced from some of Juan Antonio Ponce's oldest vines (75 years old to be exact), this calcareous clay parcel produces some excellent Bobal, the grape variety indigenous to the Manchuela D.O., which lies just a few hours southeast of Madrid. This wine manages to walk the line between rich fruit and tangy freshness, all while maintaining some serious structure as well. Real wine! Labor intensive viticultural work combined with detail oriented cellar work utilizing brief cold soaks, whole clusters, natural fermentations and malolactics and ageing in foudres, helps to produce these phenomenal, singluar red wines. For anyone not yet familiar with this producer (he is already a household name in wine circles in Spain and further afield!) these wines are well worth exploring, either to drink now (decant!) or to cellar mid-term. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)
