2014 Turnbull "Black Label" Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label exhibits lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, a medium to full body and elegance allied to serious power. This is a stylish, impeccably crafted wine that is broad, flavorful and impressive. Drink it over the next 20 years. (RP)
*Two Stars* Turnbull's top-of-the-line Cabernet is a varietal tour de force of great depth and style. It leads with a lovely, layered nose of pure cassis-like fruit laced with notes of briar and loam and framed by sympathetic sweet oak, and its potent, wonderfully vital, long-lasting flavors build on what is an altogether gorgeous aromatic start. It is at once succulent and structured, and its fruity precision and polish are such that it is bound to tempt early drinking, but this is a serious, eminently ageworthy wine with a formidable future and will continue to evolve and show ever greater beauty for a decade and more.
Turnbull's Black Label is a selection of hand-selected barrels from their Oakville estate vineyards. Over the last 15 years, Robert Parker has consistently scored this bottling between 91 and 99 points, saying in 2013 that "readers should check out Turnbull Wine Cellars without delay." Tasting notes for the 2014 vintage from the winery: "Farm dust blackberries, boysenberry and crème de cassis aromatics enthrall. Dense brooding power seeps beneath the drifts of violet and huckleberry. Firm, super fine-grained tannins fill the mid palate. Dark cherry and pomegranate reduction co-mingle with blue fruits, spice box, tobacco and dark chocolate tones to create the perfect accompaniment to the fruit purity."
