2014 Domaine de Verquière Rasteau

SKU #1282479 Vinous

Brilliant ruby-red. Musky cherry pit and garrigue scents are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper. Taut and focused on entry and then fleshier in the middle, offering bitter cherry and raspberry flavors and a touch of succulent herbs. Closes clean and taut, with good length and very soft tannins that make a late appearance. (JR) (6/2016)

Wine Spectator

Fresh, dusty-edged cherry and plum notes stream through, with flecks of dark tea and sandalwood on the finish. (JM, Web-2016)

Domaine de Verquiere consistently over-delivers in all their wines, but this 2014 Rasteau bottling strikes me as exceptional for its excellent balance. Verquiere tends to have a more delicate touch to their wines, using mostly older barrels, and harvesting the fruit before its sugars reach too high a degree. The wine is therefore elegant and poised, with a medium to lighter body that highlights the more feminine side of the Grenache grape, though the use of some Syrah in the blend adds a more vibrant, spicy kick as well.

This great value Rasteau has all of the features that made me fall in love with southern Rhone wine. It is full bodied and has great earthy, ripe flavors, but is completely free of the residual sugar and excessive alcohol that sometimes spoils modern high end Chateauneuf. If you are looking for a full bodied, dry red to go with your weeknight meals, you have found it!

A wonderful, easy-drinking wine from the Rhone region. This is sure to be a crowd pleaser with ripe fruit, soft tannin, and present, but not harsh acidity to back it up. This is an amazing deal from Domaine De Verquiere not to be missed, ideal for a special occasion or a weeknight meal.

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
