K&L Notes

It's unusual to see 100% Syrah coming out of the southern Rhone but this has become one of the signature wines of prestigious Gigondas producer Chateau de Saint Cosme. The fruit comes from the Vinsobres appellation in the northern part of the southern Rhone and the terraces of the Villefranchian subregion on the Gard side of the Rhone River. Imbued with the full flavor and richness that Syrah provides and from this exceptional 2015 vintage, you can't go wrong with this pleasing and intense French red.

"It's got to be more than flesh and bone, All that you've loved is all you own."- Tom Waits, Mule Variations. For this boy, Waits and a good bottle of wine go down well, especially in these uncertain, strugglin' times. And Saint Cosme has been making great wines in the Southern Rhone since 1490, through hard times and good, dedicated to the land and what it will give you if you love it well. This smooth, well-defined 100% Syrah captures the superb 2015 vintage, all the freshness, texture and intensity of the blueberry, blackcurrant fruit refined by exemplary tannins and a solid, nourishing-to-the-soul finish. Priced to sell, so he who waits, well.....

Cosme has always been the Rhone for people who wanted something more than just juicy bistro wine. This is the Cotes du Rhone with depth, and dark fruits, and leather, and spice, and hints of black pepper. It's almost like a Northern Rhone wine and a southern Rhone wine combined into one. The syrah really comes through in this baby and it's a wonderful thing.

Perhaps one of the most surprising of the Côtes du Rhône, not only because it is made by none other than the legendary Château de St. Cosme, but also because it is made with 100% Syrah of the highest quality from vineyards in Vinsobres. The wine delivers charming aromatics of fresh blueberries, violets and dare I say, even grapes! On the palate though, the acidity frames all this fruit firmly but nicely. This is a pretty wine to be enjoyed with a wide variety of lighter dishes or even by itself.

At once inviting and incredibly rich, the 2015 captures the essence of both this gorgeous vintage and the qualities that make Saint Cosme one of Gigondas' top producers. This is loaded with brambly black raspberry fruit, leaning towards Chambord in its concentration. Plenty of Asian spices and some dusty minerality on the finish round out the profile. The freshness of fruit that is 2015 is also exhibited with lovely acidity to keep everything focused and in balance. Saint Cosme makes benchmark Gigondas that rivals and often surpasses Chateauneuf wines to the south, try this gorgeous Rhone that captures many of those elements for a fraction of the price.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
