2015 M. Chapoutier "Le Méal" Ermitage Rouge (Pre-Arrival)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2015 Ermitage le Meal is another blockbuster that shows the richness and sweetness of fruit that is the hallmark of this awesome vintage. Jammy black raspberries, kirsch liqueur, toasted bread, licorice and violet notes all emerge from this full-bodied, unctuous, sexy, and yet incredibly fine and elegant beauty that never puts a foot wrong. Vinified in concrete and aged in a mix of small barrels and demi-muids (25% new), it’s going to need 4-5 years of cellaring yet keep for 3-4 decades.
Bright magenta. A complex, hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, incense, candied violet and Moroccan spices, and a subtle vanilla flourish emerges as the wine opens up. Energetic, palate-staining raspberry liqueur, cherry pie, floral pastille and spicecake flavors show impressive depth and vivacity. Supple, even tannins build steadily on the penetrating finish, which eventually leaves behind notes of star anise and red fruit preserves.
The 2015 Ermitage Le Méal is ablaze with cassis and raspberry pate de fruit flavors that stream from start to finish, letting light anise, floral and iron notes peek in here and there. It has terrific cut through the finish with a long echo of warm stone. (JM)
