1999 Kongsgaard Napa Valley Chardonnay (torn label)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The light green/gold-colored 1999 Chardonnay (900 cases) displays an extraordinary perfume of liquified minerals, honeysuckle, citrus oils, smoky nuts, and hints of caramel as well as orange marmalade. As it sits in the glass, even more nuances develop. It is concentrated yet extraordinarily structured and intense (much like its winemaker).
*Highly Recommended* Not only is this wine quite rich and concentrated, it offers lots of subtle flavor nuances, with ripe pear, fig, apricot, nectarine and hints of hazelnut and nutmeg.
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
High-toned aromas of pineapple, butterscotch, roasted almond and vanilla, plus a whiff of wild herbs. Comes across as more penetrating and minerally than the young 2000, with less obvious sweetness and an impression of stronger acidity. But this solidly structured wine has real spine. Lovely subtle suggestions of candied citrus peel. Says Kongsgaard: 'In the second year, as the fruit comes off and the tannins come up, this wine shows more of its structure.'
