1988 Caves Sao Joao "Frei Joao" Branco Bairrada

SKU #1277825

Imagine, if you will, that a very old-fashioned winery, with properly unhurried releases, deliciously old timey wines, and not much commercial activity for a few decades, were to suddenly spring into action and begin selling their precious older vintages. Since they are relatively unknown outside of their country of origin, and have tens of thousands of bottles available, the prices are very fair. The old whites from Sao Joao are extremely ageworthy. Think Lopez de Heredia in terms of their combination of long bottle aging and well-developed, layered, yet surprisingly lively flavor profiles. (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese wine buyer)

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
