2014 Domaine Mercouri Estate Red Peloponnese

SKU #1277440 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2014 Domain Mercouri Estate red is a blend of Refosco (85%) and Mavrodaphne (15%), aged for 12 months in used French oak. This is sunny and flavorful, with a bright and elegant feel to it. The tannins are another matter–not so elegant and able to subdue the fruit at times. Still, after the dark, earthy, brooding and older reds that Mercouri presents this issue, this had a youthful exuberance that was quite enticing. There's not much mid-palate concentration, but it is intensely flavorful and nicely structured. (MS) (6/2016)

K&L Notes

85% Refosco, 15% Mavrodaphne. From the winery: "A wine of fruity bouquet with fragrant overtones of chocolate and caramel, in harmony with the cinnamon and the vanilla of the oak wood. Its taste is structured with fine tannins and the velvety richness of Mavrodaphne. 12 months in french oak casks (mostly Allier) of 2nd, 3rd and 4th use."

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
