1994 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (3L)
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Gingery sweet oak, black raspberry, black cherry and spice on the nose. Dense and firm, with very good concentration. Expressive and enticing thanks to the very ripe merlot (for the half of the crop that did not go through reverse osmosis, the merlot was chaptalized just a half degree, vs. two for the cabernet sauvignon). Deep and long, with enough acidity to give the wine excellent balance. (ST)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Cos d'Estournel's unfiltered 1994 is one of the top wines of the vintage. It boasts an opaque blue/black/purple color, as well as a fabulously sweet nose of black fruits, licorice, pain grillee, and Asian spices. Full-bodied, with sweet, opulent fruit that reveals none of the vintage's tough tannin, this remarkably rich, well-balanced, classic wine will prove to be uncommonly long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025. Cos d'Estournel is clearly producing wines that are often of first-growth potential. (RP)
* #88 of Top 100 of 1997 * Outstanding quality for the vintage. A full-bodied Bordeaux that offers wonderful aromas of tobacco, berry and cedar, loads of refined tannins and a long, flavorful finish.
