2013 Law Estate "Sagacious" Paso Robles Rhone Blend

SKU #1276558 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Made from close to equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2013 Sagacious reveals a ruby/purple color as well as classic Paso Robles sweet dark fruits, savory herbs and pepper in a full-bodied, juicy, lively package. Brought up in 30% new French oak, it's a polished, rich and pedal to the metal beauty to drink over the coming 6-7 years. These latest releases from Law Estate Wines, which are made by the incredibly talented Scott Hawley, are jaw dropping good, and easily the greatest wines to come from this new estate. The future looks very bright indeed. (JD) (7/2016)

92 points Vinous

Opaque ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced dark berries, violet and candied licorice on the deeply perfumed nose. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering sweet boysenberry and cassis flavors complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper and allspice. Seamless and energetic on the very long, dark-fruit-dominated finish, which is given shape by smooth, slow-building tannins. Always among the richest wines that I taste from Paso Robles, or from anywhere, frankly, during my annual tastings, this year’s lineup definitely didn’t break that trend. Owners Susie and Don Law and winemaker Scott Hawley make unapologetically extroverted, even flamboyant (but vibrant) wines from the Law’s densely planted 57 acre, limestone-rich vineyard, which sits high atop Peachy Canyon and surrounds their state-of-the-art, custom-built, gravity-fed winery. Exposure to cooling ocean winds along with the influence limestone-rich soils and wide diurnal shifts give this high-altitude site the ability to produce wines that are both massive and elegant. These wines never fail to make an impression. (JR) (6/2016)

But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. Specific Appellation:

Paso Robles

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
