2013 Donkey & Goat "Ramato" Pinot Gris Anderson Valley

SKU #1274808

Grown at the Biodynamic Filigreen Farm in alluvial soils of gravel & clay loam, breaking preconceived notions has long been a rewarding result of the wine makers'. The Ramato (skin ferment) Pinot Gris from the Biodynamic Filligreen Farm is no exception. With up to five days on the skins, this wine boasts a dimensionality and depth that may surprise. The attributes Tracey (wine maker) describes as "Funkytown" will delight those who enjoy a more adventurous palate. Refreshing flavors of meyer lemon and strawberry, cranberry, and lychees are quickly balanced by savory notes of Asian spices, Gravenstein apple skins, fennel, and light to medium tannins. Floral aromatics of chrysanthemum mix well with reminders of the air that surrounds the ocean and a pucker of bergamot.

A breathtaking nose first greets you with notes of exotic flowers, citrus, and even strawberry. It is deliciously tangy on the palate, with the citrus and the strawberry also reflected, along with some exotic spices and a slightly dusty finish. A very versatile wine.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gew├╝rztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.
Country:

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Specific Appellation:

Anderson Valley/Mendocino
